Exploring the potential of new models for mapping groundwater quality presents a major challenge in water resource management, particularly in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, where groundwater faces contamination risks. This study aimed to explore the applicability of random forest (RF) and artificial neural networks (ANN) models to predict groundwater quality. Particularly, these two models were integrated into cross-validation (CV) and bootstrapping (B) techniques to build predictive models, including RF-CV, RF-B, ANN-CV, and ANN-B...

This study describes the development of the CHANnelized Optical System II (CHANOS II), an autonomous, in situ sensor capable of measuring seawater dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) at high frequency (up to ∼1 Hz). In this sensor, CO2 from acidified seawater is dynamically equilibrated with a pH-sensitive indicator dye encapsulated in gas-permeable Teflon AF 2400 tubing. The pH in the CO2 equilibrated indicator is measured spectrophotometrically and can be quantitatively correlated to the sample DIC. Ground-truthed field data demonstrate the sensor's capabilities in both time-series measurements and surface mapping in two coastal sites across tidal cycles...

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), including Mycobacterium intracellulare is a member of slow-growing mycobacteria and contributes to a substantial proportion of nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease in humans affecting immunocompromised and elderly populations. Adaptation of pathogens in hostile environments is crucial in establishing infection and persistence within the host. However, the sophisticated cellular and molecular mechanisms of stress response in M. intracellulare still need to be fully explored...

In many tumors pronounced extracellular acidosis resulting from glycolytic metabolism is found. Since several environmental stress factors affect the mitochondrial activity the aim of the study was to analyze the impact of acidosis on cellular oxygen consumption and which signaling pathways may be involved in the regulation. In two tumor cell lines and normal fibroblasts cellular oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and mitochondrial function were measured after 3 h at pH 6.6. Besides the activation of ERK1/2, p38 and PI3K signaling in the cytosolic and mitochondrial compartment, the mitochondrial structure and proteins related to mitochondria fission were analyzed...

The application of biomarkers to study the molecular composition of soil organic matter (SOM) can be used to analyze the source and degradation of SOM and reveal the stability mechanism of soil organic carbon (SOC) at the molecular level. In order to further clarify the effects of different land use patterns (farmland, grassland, and forest) on the molecular composition of SOM, the changes in molecular composition of organic matter (free lipids, cutin, suberin, and lignin) on a global scale were studied using a meta-analysis method...

Evaluation of different DGT gels with mixed micro-sized binding phases (polyacrylamide-Chelex-Metsorb, polyurethane (PU)-Chelex-Metsorb, PU-Chelex-Zr(OH)4 ) demonstrated the superior performance of PU gels due to their tear-proof handling, low shrinkage, and compliance with green chemistry...

This study aimed to develop surface complexation modeling-machine learning (SCM-ML) hybrid model for chromate and arsenate adsorption on goethite. The feasibility of two SCM-ML hybrid modeling approaches was investigated. Firstly, we attempted to utilize ML algorithms and establish the parameter model, to link factors influencing the adsorption amount of oxyanions with optimized surface complexation constants. However, the results revealed the optimized chromate or arsenate surface complexation constants might fall into local extrema, making it unable to establish a reasonable mapping relationship between adsorption conditions and surface complexation constants by ML algorithms...

This study investigated eight F. chinensis populations in China, including four geographical populations, three commercial breeds, and one wild population captured from the Yellow Sea. Population stratification analysis revealed that the Hebei geographical population and commercial breeding "Huanghai No. 4" were relatively independent and stable, reflecting a relatively closed breeding environment, whereas gene introgression was present between other populations...

Bacterial wilt (BW) of tomatoes, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum , is a devastating disease that results in large annual yield losses worldwide. Management of BW of tomatoes is difficult due to the soil-borne nature of the pathogen. One of the best ways to mitigate the losses is through breeding for disease resistance. Moreover, plant height (PH) is a crucial element related to plant architecture, which determines nutrient management and mechanical harvesting in tomatoes. An intraspecific F2 segregating population (NC 11212) of tomatoes was developed by crossing NC 84173 (tall, BW susceptible) × CLN1466EA (short, BW resistant)...

River avulsions drive important changes in the Pantanal wetlands, owing to their role in the hydro-sedimentology of the region. Although relevant to numerous ecosystem services, few studies have analyzed the influence of river avulsions on soil fertility in the Pantanal. Here, we use the largest ongoing avulsion in the Taquari River (Caronal region) to evaluate the effects on soil fertility, considering two factors: avulsion stage (1) and aquatic-terrestrial succession (2). Since both factors are influenced by macrophyte abundance, an incident map was created through tasseled cap indices from Sentinel 2 images to guide sampling efforts in flooded soils...
