Corporations wield power in today's economies, and political theories of the corporation argue about the legitimacy conditions of corporate power. This paper argues in favour of a double-fiduciary theory for corporations. Based on a concession theory of markets, it sees all markets as authorized by states (in the name of society), for the purpose of creating economic value, or wealth. Hence corporations, as much as non-incorporated firms, have a fiduciary duty to the state/society to create wealth, in the competitive structure of the market...

OBJECTIVE: There is an increased risk of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) loss among patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) treated with maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). The reduced SMM considerably influences the development of protein-energy wasting (PEW). Patients who develop PEW have higher hospitalization and mortality rates than those without PEW. This study determined if key variables could predict SMM Index (SMM adjusted for height) in patients receiving MHD. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data obtained from the Rutgers Nutrition and Kidney Database (n=178)...

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common complication in older patients with cancer and is associated with decreased quality of life and increased disability and mortality rates. Systemic inflammation resulting in neuroinflammation is considered important in the pathogenesis of POCD. The aim of this study was to explore the association between the early surgery-induced inflammatory response and POCD within 3 months after surgery in older cancer patients...

Small functional pituitary tumors can cause severely disabling symptoms and early death. The gold standard diagnostic approach includes laboratory tests and MRI, with or without inferior petrosal sinus sampling (IPSS). In up to 40% of patients, however, the source of excess hormone production remains unidentified or uncertain. This excludes patients from surgical, Gamma Knife, and CyberKnife therapy and adversely affects overall cure rates. We here assess the diagnostic yield of O -(2-[18 F]fluoroethyl)-l-tyrosine ([18 F]FET) PET/MRI for detection of small functional pituitary tumors in these patients...

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a periodic fever syndrome caused by variation in MEFV . FMF is known for IL-1β dysregulation, but the innate immune landscape of this disease has not been comprehensively described. Therefore, we studied circulating inflammatory proteins, and the function of monocytes and (albeit less extensively) neutrophils in treated FMF patients in remission. We found that monocyte IL-1β and IL-6 production was enhanced upon stimulation, in concordance with alterations in the plasma inflammatory proteome...

AIMS: Many portable electrocardiogram (ECG) devices have been developed to monitor patients at home, but the majority of these devices are single lead and only intended for rhythm disorders. We developed the miniECG, a smartphone-sized portable device with four dry electrodes capable of recording a high-quality multi-lead ECG by placing the device on the chest. The aim of our study was to investigate the ability of the miniECG to detect occlusive myocardial infarction (OMI) in patients with chest pain...

The utilization of kidneys from donors with acute kidney injury (AKI) is often limited by unpredictable post-transplantation outcomes. The aim of our study was to identify protein mediators implicated in either recovery or failure of these organs. Forty kidney biopsies from donors with (20) and without AKI (20) were selected and then subdivided according to the post-transplant outcome defined as a threshold of 45 ml/min for the eGFR at 1 year from transplantation. Tissue homogenates were analysed by western blot to assess how the levels of 17 pre-selected proteins varied across the four groups...

RATIONALE: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common global respiratory virus increasingly recognized as a major pathogen in frail older adults and as a cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. There is no single test for RSV in adults with acceptable diagnostic accuracy. Trials of RSV vaccines have recently shown excellent safety and efficacy against RSV in older adults; defining the frequency of RSV-related community infections and COPD exacerbations is important for vaccine deployment decisions...

Many shallow coastal bays have been closed off from the sea to mitigate the risk of flooding, resulting in coastal reservoir lakes with artificial armoured shorelines. Often these enclosed ecosystems show a persistent decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is likely reflected in their food-web structure. We therefore hypothesize that the food webs of coastal reservoir lakes with armoured shorelines (1) consist of relatively few species with a low food-web connectance and short food chains, and (2) are mainly fuelled by autochthonous organic matter produced in the pelagic zone...

BACKGROUND: Hepatic arterial infusion pump (HAIP) chemotherapy is an effective treatment for patients with unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). HAIP chemotherapy requires a catheter inserted in the gastroduodenal artery and a subcutaneous pump. The catheter can be placed using an open or robotic approach. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare perioperative outcomes of robotic versus open HAIP placement in patients with unresectable iCCA. METHODS: We analyzed patients with unresectable iCCA included in the PUMP-II trial from January 2020 to September 2022 undergoing robotic or open HAIP placement at Amsterdam UMC, Erasmus MC, and UMC Utrecht...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the perioperative outcomes of robotic liver surgery (RLS) and laparoscopic liver surgery (LLS) in various settings. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Clear advantages of RLS over LLS have rarely been demonstrated, and the associated costs of robotic surgery are generally higher than those of laparoscopic surgery. Therefore, the exact role of the robotic approach in minimally invasive liver surgery remains to be defined. METHODS: In this international retrospective cohort study, the outcomes of patients who underwent RLS and LLS for all indications between 2009 and 2021 in 34 hepatobiliary referral centers were compared...

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination induces memory characteristics in innate immune cells and their progenitors, a process called trained immunity mediated by epigenetic and metabolic reprogramming. Cholesterol synthesis plays an amplifying role in trained immunity through mevalonate release. Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs), such as alendronate, can inhibit cholesterol synthesis. We explored their effects on trained immunity induced by BCG in a placebo-controlled clinical study (NL74082...

Activation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident adaptor protein STING, a component of a cytosolic DNA-sensing pathway, induces the transcription of genes encoding type I interferons (IFNs) and other proinflammatory factors. Because STING is activated at the Golgi apparatus, control of the localization and activation of STING is important in stimulating antiviral and antitumor immune responses. Through a genome-wide CRISPR interference screen, we found that STING activation required the Golgi-resident protein ACBD3, which promotes the generation of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI4P) at the trans-Golgi network, as well as other PI4P-associated proteins...
