Carpal bone tumors must be investigated in clinical cases of chronic wrist pain with no previous trauma. Intraosseous ganglion, enchondroma, osteoid osteoma, and, less commonly, osteoblastoma are potential causes of osteolytic lesions affecting the carpal bones. In most cases, the clinical presentation alone is not enough to differentiate such lesions. Knowledge of certain characteristics, including the radiological and histopathological aspects of each of these tumors, is critical in order to make the differential diagnosis...

Objective This study evaluated the epidemiological data and functional outcomes from patients with concomitant distal radial and scaphoid fractures treated in a single center specialized in hand surgery. Functional outcomes analysis used validated instruments. Methods  Patients diagnosed with distal radial and scaphoid fractures treated from January 2011 to December 2021 underwent assessments using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, goniometry, radiographic consolidation, and complications six months after surgery...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of musculoskeletal (MSK) complaints in ophthalmologists and to assess whether participation in an online Iyengar yoga video program improves the baseline pain scores and awareness of proper posture in the clinic and operating room. METHODS: Ophthalmologists were recruited from online professional forums for this nonrandomized, prospective study. A pre-intervention survey, including demographics, office and procedure volumes, wellness activities, and baseline MSK pain scores, was completed...

PURPOSE: We developed a semiconstrained total wrist prosthesis that was used in a series of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. We previously reported favorable clinical outcomes for up to 5 years after surgery; however, the longer-term outcomes remain unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of this wrist prosthesis for the treatment of severe wrist rheumatoid arthritis during a minimum 10 years of follow-up. METHODS: From 2010 through 2012, total wrist arthroplasty using the semiconstrained total wrist arthroplasty device was performed in 20 wrists in 20 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (five men and 15 women)...

BACKGROUND: The main objective of the present study was to present the biomechanical properties of the wrist in patients who underwent scaphotrapeziotrapezoid arthrodesis when compared to a healthy control hand. METHODS: The study group consisted of 29 consecutive patients who underwent a scaphotrapeziotrapezoid wrist arthrodesis at least 1 year before the research onset. Both hands of all patients were examined in 4 main categories. RESULTS: Average score obtained in the VAS, before the surgery, without motion of the wrist was 5...

This case study examines the rehabilitation process of a 24-year-old female patient with thalassemia major (TM), a hereditary hemoglobinopathy, who also suffered from distal ulnar hypoplasia, a congenital anomaly that causes pain and affects the wrist joint's strength and range of motion. The patient underwent a comprehensive physical rehabilitation program that aimed to address the challenges posed by ulnar hypoplasia. This program included a combination of customized exercises, splinting, and orthotic interventions to improve hand and wrist function...

BACKGROUND: The existing diagnostic criteria for septic wrist are nonspecific, exposing patients with noninfectious etiologies to surgical morbidity. This study aimed to identify predictors differentiating septic wrist from other etiologies. METHODS: An institutional review board-approved retrospective review was conducted on patients with a presumed diagnosis of septic wrist (2003-2022). Bivariate and multiple regression analyses were performed to identify correlation between confirmed septic wrist and comorbidities (autoimmune diseases, immunosuppression, crystalline arthropathy, intravenous [IV] drug use, smoking), penetrating trauma, fever, multi-joint involvement, inflammatory markers (erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR]/C-reactive protein [CRP]/white blood cells [WBC]), serum uric acid level, blood cultures, imaging findings, and synovial fluid analysis...

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a severe condition that affects the hand, causing pain, numbness, paresthesia, and autonomic dysfunction caused by increased pressure, damage, and demyelination of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. The most effective treatment for CTS is carpal tunnel release (CTR) via transverse carpal ligament (TCL) transect. We can apply decompression through endoscopic procedures; standard open techniques and minimally invasive wrist incisions can all be used to accomplish decompression...

A volar Barton fracture is a compression injury that usually results from a fall onto an outstretched, pronated wrist. It is characterized by an intraarticular marginal volar shearing fracture of the distal radius. Despite the prevalence of distal radius fractures, consensus regarding optimal treatment remains challenging. To achieve adequate alignment, a variety of treatment techniques are available, including open reduction with plate and screw fixation, external fixation, and closed reduction with pinning...

Breast implants, whether silicone or saline-filled, have a silicone shell and have been used for decades. Studies have shown an association between silicon with systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, progressive systemic sclerosis, and vasculitis. However, controversy and inconsistency have been pervasive in the literature with respect to the role of breast implants in the development of autoimmune diseases. This case report describes the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with sensorimotor training (SMT) to treat an individual with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 2 with allodynia of the right hand/wrist. After the 9-week intervention, there was a clinically meaningful reduction in pain intensity which continued to 3 months after intervention. Further, clinically meaningful improvements in wrist and hand function and allodynia were observed. Although the use of rTMS for CRPS has been reported, this unique report provides valuable insight into the clinical utility of rTMS plus SMT for the treatment of CRPS and related symptoms...
