INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infection is a common disease in the general population. However, in patients with frequent urinary tract infection, it is important to determine any treatable cause to avoid recurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome or OHVIRA syndrome is a very rare congenital anomaly with uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. The earliest presentation of this syndrome is hematocolpos that develops during menstruation and results in dysmenorrhea and a pelvic mass shortly after menarche...

INTRODUCTION: The goal of this project is to describe the development and implementation of an evidence-based hysterectomy clinical pathway to reduce unnecessary variations in care and to promote improved patient outcomes at a reduced cost. This study characterized the longitudinal impact of hysterectomy pathway implementation on the number of total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) procedures performed between fiscal years (FY) 2012 to 2014. METHODS: All noncancerous hysterectomy surgeries performed at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) hospitals from FY 2012 to FY 2014 were identified through various systems including Medipac and EpicCare...

Non-puerperal uterine inversion is a rare clinical condition. Surgical procedures described in literature were mostly repositioning of the uterus followed by hysterectomy and laparotomy. In this paper, we reported a case of successful uterus preserving reposition of non-puerperal uterine inversion under laparoscopy. The patient, a 34-year-old, was presented with irregular vaginal bleeding with a mass protruding. On laparoscopy, the anterior wall of the uterus was opened longitudinally to release the thick ring of cervical tissue...

OBJECTIVE: Current surgical techniques for cloacal reconstruction are posterior sagittal anorecto vagino urethroplasty (PSARVUP) and posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) with total urogenital mobilization (TUM). The aim of this study was to explore the results of reconstructive cloaca surgery in the Netherlands and evaluate urogenital function after PSARVUP and TUM. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Medical records from five pediatric surgical departments in the Netherlands were studied for patients with cloacal malformations treated between 1985 and 2009...

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial glands or stroma in sites other than the uterine cavity and is associated with pain and subfertility. Surgical interventions aim to remove visible areas of endometriosis and restore the anatomy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of painful symptoms and subfertility associated with endometriosis. SEARCH METHODS: This review has drawn on the search strategy developed by the Cochrane Menstrual Disorders and Subfertility Group including searching CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and trial registries from inception to July 2013...

INTRODUCTION: Dry socket (DS) is the most common post-surgical complication following extraction of impacted molar teeth. Various risk factors have been mentioned for this complication including gender, age, amount of trauma during extraction, difficulty of surgery, inappropriate irrigation, infection, smoking, and oral contraceptive use. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the incidence of DS among surgical removal of impacted third mandibular molar in an Iranian Oral and Maxillofacial Clinic and also identifying the background risk factors...

The risk of sepsis with a hip or knee implant does not seem to be increased by prior joint injections, as long as the injection and surgery are separated by at least two months. Calcifications have been reported after intradiscal injection in the coccygeal region for coccydynia. Complete rest for 24 hours after injection of triamcinolone hexacetonide into the knee had no effect on systemic diffusion of the product. Patients infected by HIV who are treated with ritonavir are at much greater risk for Cushing syndrome after epidural injection...

BACKGROUND: Appendectomy is the traditional surgical procedure for correcting torsion of the adnexa. Although it prevents pulmonary embolism, ovarian necrosis, and secondary infection, it can have critical adverse effects on the ovarian function. METHODS: We performed surgery for adnexal torsion in 12 patients, using high ligation of the ovarian vein, followed by removal of the ovarian tumor. RESULTS: Blood flow in the residual ovary gradually returned to normal within 1 - 3 months, and a dominant follicle could be seen in the residual ovary within 2 - 6 months post-surgery in all the 12 cases...

PURPOSE: Hydrotubation has been considered to be a complimentary procedure to reproductive surgery, usually being conducted after surgery. The objective of this work was to assess the potential value of intra-operative hydrotubation in improving fertility of tubal infertile women. METHODS: 180 tubal infertile women were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: intra-operative hydrotubation (IH), post-operative hydrotubation (PH) or control group. In IH group, the hydrotubation was performed immediately after adhesiolysis during the surgery process, while in PH group it was performed within 3-7 days after the first post-operative menstruation...

Adverse events associated with hysteroscopic procedures are in general rare, but, with increasing operative complexity, it is now apparent that they are experienced more often. A spectrum of complications exist ranging from those that relate to generic components of procedures such as patient positioning and anesthesia and analgesia, to a number that are specific to intraluminal endoscopic surgery (perforation and injuries to surrounding structures and blood vessels). The response of premenopausal women to excessive absorption of nonionic fluids deserves special attention...

In this article, gynecologic conditions of increased importance in the HIV-infected woman are discussed. Women living with HIV may have an increase in menstrual disorders, lower genital tract neoplasias, gynecologic surgery, and sexually transmitted infections. The literature relevant to choosing a method of contraception for HIV-positive women is also discussed. With the advent of HAART, seropositive women are now facing issues around longevity, such as menopause and disorders of bone mineral density, as well as those associated with fertility...

BACKGROUND: Safe and effective contraception is needed for women infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is an effective long-term contraceptive that reduces menstrual bleeding and may reduce the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease. Yet, little is known about LNG-IUS use in HIV-infected women. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Six HIV-infected women had the LNG-IUS inserted between March 1998 and October 2002, and were systemically followed for a mean of 45 months...

This review covers the literature on CA125 and endometriosis; data on CA125 and oncology are not discussed. In normal women, plasma concentrations of CA125 are increased slightly at ovulation and significantly during menstruation. Marked increases are observed during pregnancy and following peritoneal irritation by infection or surgery. These data are consistent with the concept that CA125 in normal women is mainly derived from the endometrium and the irritated peritoneum. Plasma concentrations of CA125 are markedly elevated in women with cystic ovarian endometriosis and/or deeply infiltrating endometriosis, but not, or only slightly, in the luteal phase of women with minimal or mild endometriosis...
