Diseases emerging from oxidative stress and inflammatory imbalance are deeply threatening the modern world. Fisheries by-products are rich in bioactive metabolites. However, they are usually discarded, posing a real environmental burden. Herein we aimed to explore the bioactive compounds, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory capabilities of the shell of the freshwater Nile crab Potamonautes niloticus. Methanolic extract of crab shell was subjected to GC/MS and HPLC analyses of total lipids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids...

Effect of postharvest applications of sodium benzoate on physico-chemical properties and enzymatic activities of pear fruit cv. Patharnakh during cold storage were examined. Uniform and healthy fruits of pear cv. Patharnakh were treated with sodium benzoate (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0%) and thereafter stored at low temperature conditions (0-1 °C and 90-95% RH) for 70 days. Evaluation of physico-chemical parameters and enzymatic activities were made at 0, 20, 40, 60 and 70 days of storage. Sodium benzoate treatments effectively retained higher fruit firmness, sensory quality, total phenolics content and alongside suppressed the degradation of total soluble solids, ascorbic acid content and titratable acidity...

Solid-state fermentation (SSF) with Agaricus brasiliensis and Agaricus bisporus on corn was carried out. The results showed that SSF with the two fungi made up the deficiency of tryptophan in corn and improved the protein nutritional value of corn. The conjugated polyphenols contents in fermented corn decreased and free polyphenols (FPP) contents increased. FPP contents in corn fermented with the two fungi reached respectively 25 and 88 times of control, total polyohenols contents reached respectively 1.4 and 3...

In the current study, neuroprotective significance of ellagic acid (EA, a polyohenol) was explored by primarily studying its antioxidant and antiapoptotic potential against arsenic trioxide (As2 O3 )-induced toxicity in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell lines. The mitigatory effects of EA with particular reference to cell viability and cytotoxicity, the generation of reactive oxygen species, DNA damage, and mitochondrial dynamics were studied. Pretreatment of SH-SY5Y cells with EA (10 and 20 μM) for 60 min followed by exposure to 2 μM As2 O3 protected the SH-SY5Y cells against the harmful effects of the second...

Health promotion strategies and lifestyle changes are important in disease prevention. Oral health has received a large amount of attention previously as it is a fundamental component of general health and it contributes to the quality of life. Therefore, the study of associations between diet, health and the presence of bioactive compounds in food is receiving a substantial amount of attention. In the present review the effects and targets of a natural polyohenolic stilbenoid compound; resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene; RSV) is assessed, and the future prospects for RSV in promoting oral health are considered...

To obtain microorganisms for the microbial conversion of ginsenosides in red ginseng extract (RGE), mushroom mycelia were used for the fermentation of RGE. After fermentation, total sugar contents and polyohenol contents of the RGEs fermented with various mushrooms were not a significant increase between RGE and the ferments. But uronic acid content was relatively higher in the fermented RGEs cultured with Lentus edodes (2155.6 μg/mL), Phelllinus linteus (1690.9 μg/mL) and Inonotus obliquus 26137 and 26147 (1549...
