Obesity is an energy imbalance condition, which is accompanied by metabolic and cardiovascular complications.Adiponectin, produced by adipocytes, is an important adipokine involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Adiponectinlevel is altered in obesity in various populations. In Nigeria, very few studies regarding adiponectin exist, and none, to thebest of our knowledge, investigated the relationship between adiponectin and lipid profile and obesity. Therefore, this studyaims to evaluate changes in adiponectin level and serum lipids with body mass index, and investigate the relationship betweenadiponectin, serum lipids and obesity in Nigerian adults...

Sponges are a potential alternative model species to bivalves in pollution biomonitoring and environmental risk assessment in the aquatic ecosystem. In the present study, a novel in vivo exposure sponge culture model was developed from field-collected and cryopreserved sponge (Hymeniacidon perleve) cells to investigate the genotoxic effects of environmentally relevant metals in the laboratory. Sponge cell aggregates were cultured and exposed to noncytotoxic concentrations (0-0.4 mg/L) of cadmium chloride, nickel chloride, and sodium dichromate as quantified by the reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide and DNA-strand breaks assessed by the comet assay...

BACKGROUND: early Intervention in Psychosis (EI) was introduced into the British NHS as a result of the NHS Plan, about eleven years ago. The intention was to provide thebest possible care or patients with a first episode of psychosis. Recently however, long term studies over five years have suggested that early gains may be lost. METHODS AND AIMS: we wished to establish whether our own group of patients who had received Early Intervention continued over six years to have better outcomes than patients treated in Community Mental Health Teams...

The degree of folding for a protein is usually characterized by either solvent-accessible surface area or by number of formed native contacts. It is clearly that these two values must be coupled with each other, since the decrease in solvent-accessible surface area must be accompanied with the corresponding increase in the number of native contacts. In this study we show that this relationship does exist and is excellent (correlation coefficient is higher than 99%), which can be used for accurate and fast estimate of accessible surface area by means of number of native contacts...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the current study was to analyze the influence of the initial surgical approach (biopsy vs resection with macroscopic residual tumors) on the outcome of patients with localized Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study (IRS) Group III rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) enrolled in the Italian studies between 1979 and 2003. METHODS: Among the 394 patients evaluated, 323 underwent biopsy, as recommended by the protocols, and 71 patients underwent surgical resection with macroscopic residual tumors (debulking operation [DO]), although this procedure was discouraged...

BACKGROUND: Elevated benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P]-DNA adducts have been associated with 3-fold increased risk of lung cancer in current smokers. We assessed the chemopreventive effects of antioxidant supplementation using B(a)P-DNA adducts in leukocytes as an intermediate cancer risk marker. METHODS: Subjects were randomized to a double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial of antioxidant vitamin supplementation [500 mg vitamin C and 400 IU vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol) daily] or placebo...

A flow-injection analysis (FIA) of paroxetine hydrochloride (PRX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) currently used as an antidepressant drug, is described. A 0.1 mol dm(-3) acetate buffer at pH 3.07 was found to be thebest solvent. The analyte was detected at 293 nm. The calibration equation was linear over the range of 1.07 x 10(-6) to 5.35 x 10(-6) mol dm(-3). The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) were 3.2 x 10(-7) and 9.5 x 10(-7) mol dm(-3), respectively. The proposed method was applied to the determination of PRX in pharmaceutical preparations...
