Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. This, along with other noncommunicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and heart diseases, poses a double burden on a region that is still struggling to cope with the scourge of communicable diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and more recently Ebola. Causes of CKD in the region are predominantly glomerulonephritis and hypertension, although type 2 diabetes is also becoming a significant cause as is the retroviral disease...

: El Salvador has the highest renal failure mortality rate in the Americas. Five healthcare providers offer renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the country. The national RRT prevalence has never been reported. AIMS: To determine the RRT prevalence in El Salvador and some basic characteristics. METHODS: The association of nephrology coordinated a nationwide cross-sectional survey during the third quarter of 2014. 31 renal centres participated in the survey, covering 99...

The joint Society of Nephrology in Germany, Switzerland and Austria was founded on April 10th, 1961 in Wiesbaden. Board members were Hans Sarre, Kurt Kramer, Klaus Rother, Francois Reubi, Bruno Watschinger, Wolfgang Dutz, Ernst Wollheim and Karl Ullrich. The mission of the society was an intensive interaction between basic science of the kidney (anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry and molecular biology) and clinical research in nephrology and hypertension. Every year scientific symposia took place in different venues in one of the three countries, except in the years between 1963-1987, when the congresses of the International Society of Nephrology took place...

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita resulted in enormous loss of life and disrupted the delivery of health care in areas affected by them. In causing mass movements of patients, natural disasters can overwhelm the resources of nephrology communities in areas not suffering direct damage. The following largely personal account evaluates the impact these hurricanes had upon the nephrology community, patients and health care providers alike, in areas not directly affected by the storms. Mass evacuation of hundreds of dialysis patients to surrounding areas overwhelmed the capacity of local hemodialysis centers...

BACKGROUND: Longer nephrology care before end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has been linked with better outcomes. METHODS: We investigated whether longer pre-end-stage renal disease (ESRD) nephrology care was associated with lower mortality at both the patient and state levels among 443 761 incident ESRD patients identified in the USA between 2006 and 2010. RESULTS: Overall, 33% of new ESRD patients had received no prior nephrology care, while 28% had received care for >12 months...

OBJECTIVE: Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) carry an increased cardiovascular risk. Cardiovascular death is the second leading cause of death in children after renal transplantation. The 4C-T (Cardiovascular Comorbidity in Children with CKD and Transplantation) study evaluates cardiovascular target organ damage longitudinally in children prior to and after renal transplantation. DESIGN AND METHOD: The multicenter, prospective, observational 4C study enrolled 736 children aged 6 to 17 years with estimated GFR <40 ml/min/1...

In the last decade blood pressure variability (BPV) measured during a follow-up of hypertensive chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients or hemodialysis patients has received a even major attention. The aim of our study is to study the relationship between BPV and mortality and/or dialysis initiation in long survivors CKD patients. We conducted a historical prospective observational multicentric study in 131 subjects still alive at 31st December 2010, when ended a our previous study published on Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation...

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal dialysis is a maintenance therapy option for patients with end-stage renal disease. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis in Cuba was introduced in December 2007, and automated peritoneal dialysis one year later. This paper presents the outcomes attained with this blood purification technique, enabling an assessment to decide on scaling up its use in Cuba. OBJECTIVE: Describe the clinical course of patients in the first five years of the Home Peritoneal Dialysis Program at Havana's Nephrology Institute...

INTRODUCTION: In many countries on different continents, at least 10-12% of people are suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). These data indicate that CKD is a big problem, much more than previously expected. Therefore, programs should be promoted for early detection of kidney diseases and carry out public education and also the medical community. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of this article was the assessment of the nephrology knowledge of participants of the World Kidney Day in Gdansk in 2012...

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction is a relatively uncommon but serious complication of pediatric chronic kidney disease, and may be related to uremia and uncontrolled hypertension. There is limited information on the strategy for managing these children. In some cases, combined heart-kidney transplant may be considered or kidney transplant delayed until cardiac function improves. It is unknown whether these patients are at increased risk for poor outcomes after kidney transplantation...

Uruguay and Bolivia are two countries that show heterogenicity of the Latin American region, including the national income, the expenditure on health and the services for renal care. In Bolivia, there is manpower shortage for renal care with only 5 nephrologists per million people (pmp) and the prevalence of patients on dialysis is only 200 pmp. This is much lower than the mean prevalence rate of renal replacement therapy for Latin America as a whole. Uruguay on the other hand has more dedicated renal resources with 50 nephrologists pmp, and renal replacement therapy is provided to ~ 1,000 dialysis patients pmp...

BACKGROUND/AIM: In the past decade, in most regions of the world, an increasing number of adults aged 65 years and older were started on renal replacement therapy each year. In contrast to the general population for whom overnutrition or obesity is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, for patients who are maintained on hemodialysis (HD), malnutrition and malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome are associated with poor outcome. In recent years, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been considered to be the liver manifestation of metabolic syndrome, and the development of NAFLD is strongly associated with all components of metabolic syndrome (arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, and diabetes mellitus type 2) in the general population...

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common disorder that requires close collaboration between the primary care physician and nephrologist. Most aspects of early CKD can be managed in the primary care setting with nephrology input. As the disease progresses, many aspects of care should be transitioned to the nephrologist, especially as the patient nears end-stage renal disease, when dialysis and transplantation must be addressed.

Renal disease is one of the most frequent and severe complications experienced by patients with sickle cell disease; its prevalence is likely to increase as the patient population ages. We recommend regular monitoring for early signs of renal involvement and a low threshold for the use of hydroxyurea as preventative measures for end-stage renal disease. Once renal complications are detected, a careful assessment of the patient is required to rule out other causes of renal disease. Proteinuria and hypertension should be managed aggressively and the patient referred to a specialist nephrology center when progressive decline in renal function is noted...

The KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) 2012 clinical practice guideline for the management of blood pressure (BP) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) provides the structural and evidence base for the Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN) commentary on this guideline's relevancy and application to the Canadian health care system. While in general agreement, we provide commentary on 13 of the 21 KDIGO guideline statements. Specifically, we agreed that nonpharmacological interventions should play a significant role in the management of hypertension in patients with CKD...
