BACKGROUND: Pregnancy Associated Osteoporosis (PAO) can lead to serious difficulties such as fragility fractures, elongated back pain and height loss in affected women. Soluble Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor-Kappa B ligand (sRANKL) to Osteoprotegerin (OPG) ratio is chosen as a bone metabolism equation in many bone diseases characterized by bone resorption, such as post-menopausal osteoporosis and would be modified with folic acid supplementation. This study was done to compare the effects of high dose (5mg/day) and low dose (0...

The proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT) provides an essential uptake route for the vitamin folic acid (B9) in mammals. In addition, it is currently of high interest for targeting chemotherapeutic agents to tumors due to the increased folic acid requirement of rapidly dividing tumor cells as well as the upregulated PCFT expression in several tumors. To understand its function, determination of its atomic structure and molecular mechanism of transport are essential goals that require large amounts of functional PCFT...

The US FDA published new nutrition-labeling regulations in May 2016. For the first time since the implementation of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, the Daily Value (DV) for most vitamins will change, as will the units of measurement used in nutrition labeling for some vitamins. For some food categories, the Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs) will increase to reflect portions commonly consumed on a single occasion. These regulatory changes are now effective, and product label changes will be mandatory beginning 26 July 2018...

Hearing loss (HL) is one of the most common causes of disability, affecting 360 million people according to the World Health Organization (WHO). HL is most frequently of sensorineural origin, being caused by the irreversible loss of hair cells and/or spiral ganglion neurons. The etiology of sensorineural HL (SNHL) is multifactorial, with genetic and environmental factors such as noise, ototoxic substances and aging playing a role. The nutritional status is central in aging disability, but the interplay between nutrition and SNHL has only recently gained attention...

In this study, folic acid surface modified-Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (FA-TiNP) were prepared as a suitable alternative to conventional chemotherapeutic agents to treat human osteosarcoma. The particle size of TiNP increased marked after polymer assembly on the nanoparticles (NP) surface with a spherical morphology. FA-TiNP exhibited a superior anticancer effect in osteosarcoma cancer cells compared to that of bare TiNP. The reason might due to the specific interaction of FA with the folate receptor which is overexpressed in the cancer cells...

The fabrication of differential pulse voltametry (DPV) sensor for the effective detection of Quercetin (QR) was achieved by modifying carbon paste electrode (CPE) with Iron decorated multi walled carbon nano tubes (Fe-MWCNTs) followed by drop casting of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide onto the surface for optimal results. Cyclic voltammetry and DPV techniques were used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of QR (Quercetin) respectively. The sensor revealed impressive electro-catalytic behavior towards oxidation of QR with almost 6...

Clinical decision support systems have been shown to improve practitioner performance. Most systems designed to prevent medication errors generate lists with patients who fulfill the criteria of the algorithm. These lists are reviewed by a pharmacist and physicians are contacted by telephone. Presenting pop-up alerts as part of the workflow with a clear recommendation is a feature critical to success. Therefore we implemented three algorithms in a clinical decision support system alerting during the medication ordering process...

Studies on one-carbon metabolism for the assessment of folate deficiency have focused on either metabolites of folate metabolism or methionine cycle. To bridge the gap between deficiency markers in these pathways we designed a dietary induced folate deficiency study using male C57BL/6N mice. After weaning (3 weeks) mice were fed a defined control diet (1 week) before being fed a folate deficient diet (n = 6 mice) and the control diet (n = 6 mice) for 12 additional weeks. Thereafter, we determined total homocysteine in plasma and folate in erythrocytes as well as S-adenosylmethionine, S-adenosylhomocysteine, and six folate vitamers in tissues including 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, 5,10-methenyltetrahydrofolate, tetrahydrofolate, 10-formylfolic acid, and folic acid by means of stable isotope dilution assays coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry...

The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis has been partly acknowledged to result from aberrant epigenetic mechanisms. Accordingly, low folate levels are considered to be a contributing factor to promoting vascular disease because of deregulation of DNA methylation. We hypothesized that increasing the levels of folic acid may act via an epigenetic gene silencing mechanism to ameliorate atherosclerosis. Here, we investigated the atheroprotective effects of folic acid and the resultant methylation status in high-fat diet-fed ApoE knockout mice and in oxidized low-density lipoprotein-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells...

INTRODUCTION: Significant carotid stenosis is a well-documented risk factor for ischemic stroke. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting are effective procedures for the prevention of stroke in patients with this disease. However, the occurrence of restenosis could contribute to an increase in the risk of ischemic stroke. CASE REPORT: A 79-year-old woman was admitted to the Neurosurgical Department to undergo a CEA because of a progressive stenosis...

We not only modified the types and numbers of coordinated ligands in a metal agent to enhance its anticancer activity, but we also designed a metal prodrug based on the N-donor residues of the human serum albumin (HSA) IIA subdomain to improve its delivery efficiency and selectivity in vivo. However, there may be a conflict in simultaneously achieving the two goals because Lys199 and His242 in the IIA subdomain of HSA can replace its two coordinated ligands, which will decrease its anticancer activity relative to the original metal agent...

Folic acid, a water soluble B vitamin, plays an important role in cellular metabolic activities, such as functioning as a cofactor in one-carbon metabolism for DNA and RNA synthesis as well as nucleotide and amino acid biosynthesis in the body. A lack of dietary folic acid can lead to folic acid deficiency and result in several health problems, including macrocytic anemia, elevated plasma homocysteine, cardiovascular disease, birth defects, carcinogenesis, muscle weakness, and walking difficulty. However, the effect of folic acid deficiency on skeletal muscle development and its molecular mechanisms are unknown...

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a circadian-regulating hormone, has been reported to exert a protective role during acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R). High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a novel member of the damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) family, and has been verified to be an inflammatory cytokine mediating AKI induced by I/R and cisplatin. However, the effect of melatonin on HMGB1, as well as the relationship of these two with folic acid induced AKI are elusive...
