Objective: To explore the surgical results and clinicopathological features of gastric cancer patients with liver metastases. Methods: The clinicopathological data and post-operative survival of 37 patients who underwent resection of liver metastasis from gastric cancer at our department from Dec. 2007 to Dec. 2014 were analyzed. Results: The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates after resection were 91.4%, 57.9%, and 22.0%, respectively, with a median survival of 37 months. Univariate analysis revealed that lymph node metastasis, multiple hepatic metastases and no preoperative chemotherapy are unfavorable prognostic factors for overall survival...

BACKGROUND: Although the number of colorectal liver metastases (CLM) is decreasingly considered as a contraindication to surgery, patients with 10 CLM or more are often denied liver surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the outcome after liver surgery and to identify prognostic factors of survival in such patients. METHODS: The study population consisted of a multicentre cohort of patients with CLM (N=12 406) operated on, with intention to resect, from January 2005-June 2013 and whose data were prospectively collected in the LiverMetSurvey registry...

BACKGROUND: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is mostly resistant to standard chemotherapy that results in poor patient survival. To understand the genetic background of these tumours, we performed whole-genome sequencing of OCCC tumours. METHODS: Tumour tissue samples and matched blood samples were obtained from 55 Japanese women diagnosed with OCCC. Whole-genome sequencing was performed using the Illumina HiSeq platform according to standard protocols. RESULTS: Alterations to the switch/sucrose non-fermentable (SWI/SNF) subunit, the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signalling pathway, and the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK)/Ras signalling pathway were found in 51%, 42%, and 29% of OCCC tumours, respectively...

OBJECTIVE: The histologic response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) has been intimately related to outcomes in locally advanced rectal cancer. However, reliable prognostic factors have yet to be established. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study group comprised 198 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who received CRT. A modified classification based on the combination of ypStage and tumor regression grade (TRG) was developed. ypStage II with TRG 2 was classified as ypTRGstage IIA, and ypStage II with TRG 3 or 4 was classified as ypTRGstage IIB...

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the hippocampus have been implicated in the pathophysiology of psychosis. However, it is still unclear whether certain abnormalities are a pre-existing vulnerability factor, a sign of disease progression or a consequence of environmental factors. We hypothesized that first-episode psychosis patients who progress to schizophrenia after one year of follow up will display greater volumetric and morphological changes from the very beginning of the disorder. METHODS: We studied the hippocampus of 41 patients with a first-episode psychosis and 41 matched healthy controls...

Granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) comprise 2% to 5% of ovarian neoplasms, with unpredictable patterns of recurrence. The HER family, GATA4, and SMAD3 genes are reportedly involved in GCT proliferation and apoptosis and may serve as new predictors of recurrence. The aim of the study was to evaluate novel predictors of recurrence in GCT from a large single institution cohort. Patients diagnosed with GCTs (n=125) between 1975 and 2014 were identified. Clinicopathologic parameters were obtained and immunohistochemical evaluation was performed of calretinin, inhibin, HER2, CD56, SMAD3, and GATA4...

Lipid profiles and prostate cancer have a controversial relationship, and the predictive ability of lipids in determining cancer risk estimation is still questionable. This study demonstrates a significance assessment of the plasma lipid profiles of subjects with prostate cancer. Locoregional subjects irradiated with external beam therapy were compared to prostate cancer subjects with bone metastases. The histopathologic diagnosis of 103 subjects (71 locoregional [Group 1] and 32 palliative [Group 2]) were analyzed and compared using their blood samples, total cholesterol (CHL), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol...

BACKGROUND: Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been associated with reduced risks for certain human cancers. However, the effects of aspirin and NSAIDs on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remain controversial, and the prognostic effects of these drugs in patients with HNSCC are largely unknown. This study examined the clinical impact of aspirin and NSAIDs on disease recurrence and survival in patients with HNSCC. METHODS: This study analysed a cohort of 1392 consecutive patients who received definitive treatment for previously untreated HNSCC at our tertiary referral center...

We have previously shown that galectin-4 expression is an independent predictor for lymph node metastasis and serves as an adverse prognostic indicator in patients with acinar adenocarcinoma of the lung. In contrast, thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) expression in non-small cell lung carcinoma has been shown to be associated with a favorable prognosis. In the present study, 208 cases of acinar adenocarcinoma of the lung and 36 cases with distant metastatic lesions of lung adenocarcinoma were immunohistochemically examined for expression of galectin-4 and TTF-1 to elucidate their correlation with clinicopathological factors...
