SUMMARY: This is a report of a rare case of Graves' hyperthyroidism associated with severe bilateral Graves' orbitopathy, in a patient with an anophthalmic eye socket. On clinical review her prosthetic eye (left eye) was tilting upwards, along with worsening of Graves' orbitopathy (GO) in the only seeing eye. As she refused IV glucocorticoids, she was offered rituximab which only caused a transient improvement in the clinical activity score of the eye. She had persistent right upper lid retraction of 6 mm, associated with lagophthalmos...

To describe the anterior segment (AS) findings in patients with microphthalmia with linear skin defects syndrome (MLS), also known as microphthalmia, dermal aplasia, and sclerocornea (MIDAS). A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify patients with a diagnosis of MLS syndrome seen at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Ophthalmic examination, high-frequency ultrasound, AS optical coherence tomography, and molecular testing were reviewed. Five female patients (10 eyes) were identified. One eye was anophthalmic, one was in a status post penetrating keratoplasty, and eight eyes presented with congenital corneal opacity (CCO)...

Irritation and biofilm adhesion are complaints associated with ocular prosthesis use. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of prosthesis repolishing on several conditions of anophthalmic volunteers. Participants were divided into two groups: intervention (IG, n = 10) and nonintervention (NIG, n = 6) groups. The anophthalmic cavity, contralateral eye, and prosthesis surface were evaluated at initial, day 15, and day 30 after repolishing. Microbiological analysis (colony-forming units), exfoliative cytology (conjunctiva inflammatory cells), sensory analysis (quantitative mechanical sensory test), tear production (Schirmer's test), and conjunctival inflammation (clinical evaluation) were performed...

PURPOSE: To compare tear film osmolarity (TFO) values and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) levels between anophthalmic sockets and healthy fellow eyes and to assess the use of the MMP-9 and TFO as objective biomarkers for the dry anophthalmic socket syndrome (DASS). METHODS: In this prospective single-center study, the anophthalmic sockets and healthy fellow eyes of 98 unilateral anophthalmic patients were assessed using the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, InflammaDry® MMP-9 point-of-care immunoassay, TFO with TearLab™ Osmolarity System, and clinical conjunctival inflammation...

Anophthalmia (missing eye) describes a failure of early embryonic ocular development. Mutations in a relatively small set of genes account for 75% of bilateral anophthalmia cases, yet 25% of families currently are left without a molecular diagnosis. Here, we report our experimental work that aimed to uncover the developmental and genetic basis of the anophthalmia characterising the X-linked Ie (eye-ear reduction) X-ray-induced allele in mouse that was first identified in 1947. Histological analysis of the embryonic phenotype showed failure of normal eye development after the optic vesicle stage with particularly severe malformation of the ventral retina...

An 89-year-old woman presented with chronic pain and foreign body sensation in a healthy-appearing anophthalmic socket. Computed tomography of the orbits showed hyperdense, cystic lesions superior and posterior to the orbital implant. Orbital exploration was performed; the orbital implant and lesions were removed. Histopathology revealed cystic structures composed of fibrocellular tissue lined with histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells, consistent with pseudocysts. Postoperatively, the patient noted the resolution of her symptoms...

Purpose: Porous orbital implants are commonly used materials following enucleation or evisceration. Implant-associated inflammation is a rare but serious complication which may necessitate explantation. Observations: We report a case of a patient who developed extensive orbital inflammation six months after implantation of a vicryl (polyglactin 910) mesh-wrapped Bioceramic (aluminum oxide) spherical implant. An orbital biopsy demonstrated an extensive fibroinflammatory reaction with multinucleated giant cells...

METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 134 anophthalmic patients. Demographics, measurements, and photographs were reviewed...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of reconstruction of a contracted socket is to retain a satisfactory prosthesis. Simple procedures to modify the socket architecture as first line options could avoid multiple staged procedures, increased surgical time, harvesting tissues or use of allografts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcome of modifying the socket architecture by making conjunctival relaxing incisions leaving it bare to re-epithelialize and compare it to dermis-fat graft...

Eyelid and orbital deformities caused by various defects, such as tumor resection and trauma, whether congenital or acquired, are extremely complex and atypical. Several classifications systems for these anophthalmic conditions have been developed, but none have proven suitable for determining the ideal reconstructive surgical strategy. We therefore designed a novel system known as the Anatomic Classification of the Anophthalmic Eye Socket (Types 0-V) for optimum reconstruction of anophthalmic socket deformities focusing on eyelid and orbital defects...

Individuals with congenital blindness due to bilateral anophthalmia offer a unique opportunity to examine cross-modal plasticity in the complete absence of any stimulation of the 'visual' pathway even during development in utero. Our previous work has suggested that this complete sensory deafferentation results in different patterns of reorganisation compared with those seen in other early blind populations. Here, we further test the functional specialisation of occipital cortex in six well-studied cases with anophthalmia...

Purpose: To describe a case of local recurrence of uveal melanoma with concomitant brain metastases after secondary enucleation. Observations: A 73 year-old patient presented with dizziness and gait instability. MRI of the orbits and brain showed an anophthalmic socket with an orbital implant and an associated optic nerve mass as well as multiple mass lesions in the brain. The patient's history was significant for secondary enucleation for uveal melanoma recurrence seven years prior to presentation...

Orbital implant extrusion is a known complication following evisceration and enucleation. In this case report, we present a 45-year-old woman who presented with a left silicone implant exposure and infection 2 years following evisceration with saddle nose on examination. CT of the maxillofacial bones without contrast showed bilateral soft tissue infiltration around the superior recti muscles, as well as a nasal septum perforation from extensive sinus disease. Left orbitotomy revealed a small fibrotic mass near the orbital roof...

Mice produce ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) at different ages and social contexts, including maternal-pup separation, social play in juveniles, social interactions, and mating in adults. The USVs' recording can be used as an index of sensory detection, internal state, and social motivation. While sensory deprivation may alter USVs' emission and some social behaviors in deaf and anosmic rodents, little is known about the effects of visual deprivation in rodents. This longitudinal study aimed to assess acoustic communication and social behaviors using a mouse model of congenital blindness...
