BACKGROUND: Prognosis of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is affected by pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). METHODS: Among 202 patients (mean age: 46.1 ± 13.3 years; 177 women) with SSc, those with a tricuspid regurgitation (TR) jet maximal velocity at 2D-echocardiography (2DE) < 2.8m/second were not considered at high risk for PAH, whereas those with a TR velocity >3m/second or between 2.8 and 3m/second and associated with dyspnea were. RESULTS: Among 22 patients at risk, 15 (mean age: 50...

Physiological studies on fetal blood in narrow glass tubes have suggested that fetal optimal hematocrit (hct) might be as high as 60%. A theoretical 'ideal' hct can also be predicted with a theoretical curve of hematocrit/viscosity (h/η) ratio vs hct constructed with Quemada's model. We used the database of one of our previous papers on fetal hemorheology to reinterpret its results with this concept. A series of 28 intrauterine cord punctures (between 19 and 33 weeks gestation) with doppler measurements of resistance in umbilical arteries was studied...

There has been revival of in interest in exercise testing of the pulmonary circulation for the diagnosis of pulmonary vascular disease, but there still is uncertainty about body position and the most relevant measurements. Doppler echocardiography pulmonary hemodynamic measurements were performed at progressively increased workload in 26 healthy adult volunteers in supine, semi-recumbent and upright positions which were randomly assigned at 24 hours intervals. Mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) was estimated from the maximum tricuspid regurgitation jet velocity...

Foam rolling has been developed as a popular intervention in training and rehabilitation. However, evidence on its effects on the cellular and physiological level is lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of foam rolling on arterial blood flow of the lateral thigh. Twenty-one healthy participants (age 25 ± 2 years, height 177 ± 9 cm, body weight 74 ± 9 kg) were recruited from the medical and sports faculty. Arterial tissue perfusion was determined by spectral Doppler and power Doppler ultrasound, represented as peak flow (Vmax), time average velocity maximum (TAMx), time average velocity mean (TAMn), and resistive index (RI), and with semiquantitative grading that was assessed by four blind-folded investigators...

Resistant hypertension is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events. Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is impaired in patients with hypertension and an independent predictor of cardiac mortality. However, there are no published data on CFR in the subset of treatment-resistant hypertension. The aim of this study was to assess CFR in patients with resistant hypertension. Twenty-five consecutive patients with primary resistant hypertension, scheduled for renal denervation, 25 matched patients with controlled hypertension, and 25 healthy controls underwent transthoracic colour Doppler echocardiography at rest and during adenosine infusion...

INTRODUCTION: The relation between sexual and cardiovascular health in women is not well defined. Clitoral color Doppler ultrasound (CDU) with assessment of the pulsatility index (PI), reflecting resistance to blood flow, has been proposed as an objective measurement of sexual functioning. AIM: To investigate associations between clitoral PI and cardiometabolic risk factors, sexual and intrapsychic parameters, and self-perception of body image. METHODS: Seventy-one adult heterosexual women in a stable relationship attending our clinic for sexual dysfunction were consecutively recruited...
