BACKGROUND Ovarian torsion can be seen in the otherwise-normal ovary and is a challenging issue in the emergency department. The aims were (1) to evaluate and compare the surgically verified ovarian torsion cases in otherwise-normal ovaries and ovaries including a mass or cyst and (2) to investigate whether the normal-appearing ovaries on ultrasound examination affected the diagnosis of ovarian torsion or not. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective cohort study design was used. The medical records of all postmenarchal adolescent girls with surgically verified ovarian torsion treated in a university hospital from 2010 to 2016 were reviewed...

Undescended ovary is a rare entity and usually presentedas a case report. It is associated with urinary and uterine anomalies. Symptomatic patients are diagnosed during surgery. Most of the patients are asymptomatic and treatment is unnecessary. They are incidentally diagnosed during infertility evaluation and treatment such as ovarian hyperstimulation studies. A 15-year-old female patient presented with the diagnosis of renal cystic massas identifiedduring ultrasonography in another hospital. Abdominal computedtomography image was requested...

BACKGROUND: Cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase deficiency (PORD) is a rare disease exhibiting a variety of clinical manifestations. It can be difficult to differentiate with other diseases such as 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and Antley-Bixler syndrome (ABS). Nearly 100 cases of PORD have been reported worldwide. However, the genetic characters and clinical management are still unclear, especially in China. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we report a 27-year-old female Chinese patient who first presented with amenorrhea and recurrence of large ovary cyst...

The role of whole-body positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) with fluorodeoxyglucose ( FDG fluorodeoxyglucose ) is now established in the assessment of many gynecologic and genitourinary malignant tumors. FDG fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT has been widely adopted for staging assessments in patients with suspected advanced disease, in cases of suspected disease recurrence, and for determining prognosis in a number of malignancies. A number of pitfalls are commonly encountered when reviewing FDG fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT scans in gynecologic and genitourinary cases; these pitfalls can be classified into those that yield potential false-positive or false-negative results...

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex and heterogeneous endocrine disorder, generally exhibiting the characteristic features of hyperandrogenemia, insulin resistance (IR) and obesity. Nesfatin-1 is derived from the precursor nucleobindin2 (NUCB2), and plays an active role in energy balance, glucose metabolism and most likely gonadal function. In order to explore the role of nesfatin-1, we employed a rat model that uses letrozole to induce PCOS. The PCOS rats exhibited increased body weight, irregular cycles, polycystic ovaries characterized by cysts formed from atretic follicles, and a diminished granulosa layer...

We report the case of a 44-year-old female with sebaceous adenoma arising in mature cystic teratoma of the ovary. The patient had a tumor in the left ovary; 125 x 90 x 70 mm. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of structures typical of dermoid cysts. However, large areas of sebaceous proliferation were found. These areas were comprised of sebaceous nodules with features similar to a sebaceous adenoma of the skin. Immunohistochemically, the tumor showed "wild-type" expression of p53 and low proliferative activity (Ki-67 index < 5%)...

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy. Recently, several molecularly targeted anticancer agents have been developed for ovarian cancer; however, its prognosis has remained extremely poor. The development of molecularly targeted therapy, as well as companion diagnostics, is required to improve outcomes for patients with ovarian cancer. In this study, to identify microRNAs involved in the progression of ovarian cancer we analyzed serum microRNAs in patients with ovarian cancer using microRNA array and qRT-PCR and examined the anticancer properties of microRNA expression in ovarian cancer cells...

This study examined the possible protective effect of quercetin(QE) on cadmium chloride (CdCl2) - induced reproductive toxicity in female rats. Cadmium (Cd) accumulated in the uterus and ovaries of rats, decreased antioxidants [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione (GSH)], and raised the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the uterus and ovaries of rats. Serum concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone decreased significantly after CdCl2 administration...

Preterm ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is a rare syndrome in which preterm infant girls have hypogastric, upper leg and labial swelling accompanied by elevated serum oestradiol levels and ovarian follicular cysts on ultrasound. Our case is an infant born at 23 weeks gestational age who at 30 weeks postconceptional age (PCA) developed elevated 17-hydroxyprogesterone on her newborn screen with associated clitoromegaly and a ventral groove on the inferior aspect of the erectile tissue. An initial pelvic ultrasound at 32 weeks PCA demonstrated a normal appearing uterus, but the ovaries were not visualised...

Teratomas are the most common type of germ cell tumour. It can be congenital or acquired and are usually found in gonads (testes and ovaries). Parasitic dermoid cysts are rare and their actual incidence is unknown. We are reporting a case of 25-year-old gravida two, para one and one living child, who underwent emergency cesarean section in view of symptomatic placenta previa. A parasitic dermoid cyst was found incidently in front of uterus which was attached to uterovasical fold of bladder. This cyst did not show any connection to uterus or adnexa...

Mature cystic teratoma co-existing with a mucinous cystadenocarcinoma is an infrequently encountered entity with only a handful of cases reported till date. The possibilities in such a case are either a malignant transformation of a benign teratoma into adenocarcinoma or a collision tumor between a mature cystic teratoma and a mucinous tumour of either a primary ovarian surface epithelial-stromal origin or a secondary from a primary gastrointestinal tract tumour. The importance of distinguishing between the two entities has significant bearing on subsequent therapeutic management...

The aim of this study was to identify potential changes that could occur during histological evaluations of CLAWN miniature swine, with potential consequences for subsequent experiments. The systemic organs from male and female CLAWN miniature swine (16.3-42.3 months old) that had been used in long-term studies of coronary stent implantation were examined histologically. Commonly observed histopathological findings were testicular/epididymal atrophy, cyst-like follicles in the ovaries, hemosiderin deposition in the spleen, lipofuscin deposition in the proximal tubular epithelia and presence of eosinophilic globules in the Bowman's space and the lumen of the proximal tubules in the kidneys, and cellular infiltration in several organs, including the eyelids, respiratory organs, and digestive tract...

Identifying the etiology of acute pelvic pain in girls is often clinically challenging. Particularly in young girls, it is often difficult to determine if acute pelvic symptoms are originating from a gynecologic source or from a genitourinary or gastrointestinal etiology based on the child's clinical examination alone. Therefore, imaging plays a key role in establishing a diagnosis and in directing medical and surgical treatment. Pediatric gynecologic conditions, which can present acutely with pain or mass or both include ovarian torsion, hematometrocolpos, pelvic inflammatory disease, inguinal hernias containing an ovary or the uterus or both, adnexal cysts, pregnancy, vaginal foreign bodies, and ovarian vein thrombosis...

The female reproductive lifespan is largely determined by the size of primordial follicle pool, which is established following germ cell cyst breakdown around birth. Almost two-third of oocytes are lost during germ cell cysts breakdown, following autophagic and apoptosis mechanisms. To investigate a possible relationship between germ cell cyst breakdown and nutrition supply, we established a starvation model in mouse pups at birth and evaluated the dynamics of cyst breakdown during nutrient deprivation. Our results showed that after 36 h of starvation between 1...

BACKGROUND: Ectopic pregnancies occur when the implantation of a fertilized ovum occurs outside the endometrial cavity. Such pregnancies occur in approximately 1.5% to 2.0% of all pregnancies and cause 6% of maternal deaths. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate osteopathic structural examination (OSE) findings in patients with ectopic pregnancies of uncommon locations and to establish the utility of these findings in the diagnosis of these ectopic pregnancies. METHODS: In this prospective case series, a focused OSE was performed on each patient with an ectopic pregnancy at her initial presentation after the patient history but before other diagnostic or laboratory tests were performed and surgical treatment was initiated...

A 50-year-old post-menopausal woman with sudden lower abdominal pain was transported to hospital by ambulance. Abdominal symptoms and computed tomography(CT)suggested a diagnosis of acute pan-peritonitis due to gastrointestinal perforation, and emergency surgery was performed. The intraoperative findings led to a diagnosis of a ruptured cyst in the left ovary, a portion of which was observed to be partially solid, and therefore, ovarian cancer was suspected. Accordingly, a unilateral(left)salpingo-oophorectomy and intraperitoneal drainage were performed with assistance from a gynecologist...
