Tankyrases are physiological regulators of Axin, a protein involved in several cellular processes, including Wnt signaling. Here, we investigated the effect of a specific Tankyrase inhibitor (XAV939) in follicular-luteal dynamics, and its possible relationship with ovarian vascular development. Studies were designed to analyze the effect of intrabursa administration of XAV939 in gonadotropin-treated prepubertal rats. In particular, we examined follicle and corpus luteum development, steroidogenesis, angiogenic markers, and apoptotic parameters...

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting young women. Even though the definition of PCOS has changed over the years, all diagnostic criteria include two or more of the following: oligomenorrhea/oligoovulation/anovulation, androgen excess and polycystic ovaries (PCO). Traditional method of assessing the ovarian morphology has been transvaginal pelvic ultrasound. Recent studies support that serum anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels correlate with the number of ovarian follicles and cysts...

While the differentiation of oocytes is key for embryonic development, and its investigation is crucial for advancing our understanding of human reproduction and fertility, many fundamental questions in oogenesis have been long standing. However, recent technical advances have led to several breakthroughs mainly in mice and zebrafish. Here I review these recent findings, including regulation and organization of the germline cyst, the mechanistics of chromosomal pairing, establishment of cell polarity, and formation of a universal mRNA-protein (mRNP) granule called the Balbiani body...

Dermoid cysts are benign developmental lesions consisting of tissues of more than one germ cell lineage origin. The urinary bladder is a very rare location of dermoid cysts. We report a case of an 18-year-old woman who presented with suprapubic pain, dysuria and turbid urine. Blood and serum chemistry was normal. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass of 2.5×2 cm within the urinary bladder infiltrating fundus of urinary bladder with extraluminal extension. At cystoscopy, an irregular mass arising from the dome of the urinary bladder with a covering of hair and whitish scales was seen...

BACKGROUND: Oophoropexy for ovarian torsion is easy to be done by many tools either suturing to the lateral pelvic wall, plication of the ovarian ligament or even fixation to the back of the uterus, but it is little bit difficult to do it for pregnant women with less manipulation. OBJECTIVE: We propose that using trocar site closure needle can be easier and faster technique to do this. To assess the feasibility of using the trocar site closure needle to do oophoropexy in ovarian torsion and its possible applicability...

This report describes a case of spontaneous abortion in a 4-year-old Golden Retriever dog with ovarian endometriosis. Clinical findings indicated that there was not any senstivity in the abdomen and the viability parameters were within the reference values. On vaginal examination, serosanguineous discharge was determined. Ultrasonographic examination revealed that no fetus was observed in cornu uteri and an hypoechoic cystic structure, measuring 3.2 × 3.4 cm was found behind the left kidney. Ovarian cyst was suspected, and then ovariohysterectomy was performed...

Owing to most tumors in young patients being benign, ovarian preserving treatments are preferable if surgically feasible [1]. In the present study, retrospective data from patients aged up to 18 years diagnosed with cysts or benign neoplasms of the ovary who were included in the USA Nationwide Inpatient Sample between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2011 were retrieved; oophorectomy and cystectomy rates were compared, and factors associated with ovarian sparing surgery (OSS) were evaluated. Patients with ovarian neoplasms or torsion, and those who underwent hysterectomy were excluded...

OBJECTIVE: Wide variation exists in ovarian cancer incidence rates suggesting the importance of environmental factors. Due to increasing environmental pollution, trace elements and heavy metals have drawn attention in studies defining the etiology of cancer, but scant data is available for ovarian cancer. Our aim was to compare the tissue concentrations of lead, selenium and nickel in epithelial ovarian cancer, borderline tumor and healthy ovarian tissues. METHODS: The levels of lead, selenium and nickel were estimated using atomic absorption spectrophotometry in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples...

Ovarian torsion is a surgical emergency demanding timely diagnosis and treatment to prevent loss of the ovaries which if happens may result in functional and emotional consequences. Simple (less than 5cm in size) ovarian cysts require follow-up for potential self-resolution. We describe a case of antenatally detected bilateral ovarian cysts that developed bilateral ovarian torsions on follow-up, postnatally.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an incurable disorder that is associated with ovarian dysfunction. It affects millions of women in the UK. The signs and symptoms of PCOS include ovarian cysts, acne and excess hair growth (hirsutism), and can have a negative effect on the self-esteem of women with the condition. PCOS is also a potential cause of reduced fertility. This article uses a case study approach to discuss the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, and diagnosis of PCOS, as well as complications, treatment and psychosocial implications of the condition...

The process of selecting for cellular fitness through competition plays a critical role in both development and disease. The germarium, a structure at the tip of the ovariole of a Drosophila ovary, contains two follicle stem cells (FSCs) that undergo neutral competition for the stem cell niche. Using the FSCs as a model, we performed a genetic screen through a collection of 126 mutants in essential genes on the X chromosome to identify candidates that increase or decrease competition for the FSC niche. We identified approximately 55% and 6% of the mutations screened as putative FSC hypo- or hypercompetitors, respectively...

The purpose of this article is to review the hereditary renal cystic diseases that can manifest in children and adults, with specific attention to pathogenesis and imaging features. Various common and uncommon hereditary renal cystic diseases are reviewed in terms of their underlying etiology, including the involved genetic mutations and the affected proteins and cellular structures. Focus is placed on the morphologic findings in each condition and the features that distinguish one disorder from another. The two most common categories of hereditary renal cystic disease are (a) the ciliopathic disorders, which are related to mutations affecting the primary cilia (called "ciliopathies"), and (b) the phakomatoses...

Borderline tumors (BOT) of the ovary account for 10% to 20% of ovarian neoplasms. Like ovarian cancer, BOT encompass several different histological subtypes (serous, mucinous, endometrioid, clear cell, transitional cell and mixed) with serous (SBOT) and mucinous (MBOT) the most common. Current hypotheses suggest low-grade serous carcinoma may develop in a stepwise fashion from SBOT whereas the majority of high grade serous carcinomas develop rapidly presumably from inclusion cysts or ovarian surface epithelium...

We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with Salmonella serovar Schwarzengrund gastroenteritis acquired during foreign travel. Her case was complicated by superinfection of a pre-existing ovarian endometrioma with a quinolone-resistant organism; the resultant ovarian abscess ultimately required surgical removal for resolution. We review the key features of this case and the previous literature on Salmonella ovarian abscess. This report highlights (1) the potential for metastatic spread of Salmonella to the ovary in women with pre-existing cysts or endometriomas and (2) the increasing worldwide burden of quinolone-resistant Salmonella...
