The growing use of anti-TNF drugs during the last years has reopened the discussion about the possible increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma in patients with such type of treatments. We present our clinical experience and critical opinion about the current situation of such issue regarding cutaneous T-cell lymphomas.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the inhibition of sanguinarine on S180 sarcoma in mice and the effect of angiogenesis. METHODS: S180 subcutaneous implanted tumor model mice were randomly divided into six groups: control group, cyclophosphamide (CTX) group, sanguinarine (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) groups and combination group. The mice were sacrificed on the 10th day to measure the tumor weight and volumes, and caculate the tumor growth inhibition. Histopathology was performed, while immunohistochemistry was applied for assessment of MVD (microvascular density) and the expression of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor)...

OBJECTIVE: A case of misdiagnosed acral melanoma of the hallux and its diagnostic challenge are herein presented. Acral melanoma is insidious and subtle. A methodic approach to any suspicious lesions is mandatory. A case of misdiagnosed acral melanoma of the hallux is herein reported in a 66-year-old healthy man. Suggestions concerning similar non-healing lesions are herein presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was firstly clinically diagnosed and treated as a micosis at another centre...

BACKGROUND: In 1984 the Venezuelan Work Groups in Mycology (VWGM) were created introducing an innovative approach to the study of the mycoses in Venezuela. AIM: To study the occurrence of the mycoses in Venezuela. METHODS: Review the reported cases of mycoses by the newsletter Boletín Informativo Las Micosis en Venezuela (VWGM) from 1984 to 2010. RESULTS: The data collected showed 36,968 reported cases of superficial mycoses, 1,989 of deep systemic cases, and 822 of localized mycoses...

South American blastomycosis is a systemic micosis caused by infection with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The most frequently affected sites are the lower lip buccal mucous membrane, palate, tongue, sublingual region, lymph glands, and lungs. However, colonic involvement is not a common expression of Paracoccidioidomycosis. We report a case of chronic diarrhea and pancolitis caused by Paracoccidioidomycosis with fatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: In many small rural communities in Mexico, medical care is deficient, empirical or absent. OBJECTIVE: In order to improve health coverage in rural areas, the Mexican Institute of Social Security organizes Medical and Surgical Meetings of various specialties including Dermatology and Mycology (MSDM). These include visits to rural hospitals by dermatologists and a mycologist to care for underprivileged communities. In addition to taking samples, they establish the clinical diagnosis and indicate medical and/or surgical treatment, with follow-up visits when needed...

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of nistatine, one of the most used antifungal agents for this micosis, was determined in 68 Candida strains isolated from vaginal smears. Candida albicans represented 75% of the total strains whereas C. parapsilosis, C. krusei and C. glabrata were much less frequently found. The predisposing factors were pregnancy and antibacterial treatment whereas leukorrhea and itching were the prevailing symptoms in most of the cases. MIC values from the use of a broth dilution method ranged from 0,5-8mg/mL and the geometric mean was 1...

Development of a drug-resistant variant of HIV-1 has been one of the major concerns contributing to the transmission of the virus. A 40-year-old woman presented to the clinic with micosis and oral candidiasis. The subject was referred for HIV-1 diagnosis. Subsequent investigations revealed a very low CD4 T cell count (48 cell/microl blood) and high plasma HIV-1 RNA load (4.33 x 10(5) copy/ml). A 1.3-kb pol fragment was sequenced in virus collected from plasma and the vaginal compartment. Plasma virus had no mutation in reverse transcriptase and one mutation in protease (L63P)...

Seventy bone marrow biopsies belonging to 53 patients with non-Hodgkin lymphomas, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and micosis fungoides were studied. Bone marrow involvement was analyzed in correlation to staging before and after treatment. Bone marrow involvement was most frequently seen in CLL and IL followed by WDLL and PDLL/N and PDLL/D. Highest incidences after treatment were in CLL, WDLL, and PDLL/N and PDLL/D. With respect to staging, WDLL disseminated to bone marrow only in the late stages (III or IV), whereas the nodular and diffuse forms of PDLL presented similar infiltration in all stages...
