Primary sebaceous carcinoma of the lacrimal gland (PSCLG) is the rarest lacrimal gland (LG) tumor, often belatedly diagnosed, worsening the prognosis. We present a 68-year-old man with a large, indurated mass in the left orbital outer quadrant, visible at the conjunctival upper temporal fornix, extending to the lower fornix, with left gaze restriction. The lesion was not related to the eyelid or other periocular tissues. Excisional biopsy revealed the PSCLG diagnosis. There are only eight others previous PSCLGs...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9) billing codes for identifying ocular oncology diagnoses. METHODS: Population-based retrospective cohort study of all Olmsted County, Minnesota residents with any ocular neoplasm-related ICD-9 code from January 1, 2006 to October 1, 2015. All medical records were reviewed for confirmation of ocular neoplasm. Diagnoses with ≥5 cases confirmed via a medical record review were compared to corresponding ICD-9 codes...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article and accompanying video is to demonstrate a transorbital endoscopic approach for accessing the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF). This technique does not require a skin incision, avoids dissection of critical neurovascular structures, and utilizes a comparatively small osteotomy. The 2 cases presented in this article highlight the utility of a transorbital endoscopic approach for accessing an anatomic region that has traditionally required more invasive techniques to reach...

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE)-associated edema and erythema on the lower eyelid as the only manifestation of the disease is a rare clinical entity. Persistent discoid lupus-related lower eyelid manifestations are challenging to diagnose, can be mistaken for blepharitis or malignancies, and often require histopathological evaluation. If left untreated, the condition can progress, among others, to conjunctival scarring or symblepharon formation. Thus, early identification and management of the disease entity is of the utmost significance...

Periocular and ocular surface non-melanoma malignancies, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), and ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN), are rare, but their management requires special considerations. The most common periocular malignancy is BCC which comprises 80-96% of tumors, followed by SCC which represents 5-10% of tumors. OSSN represents a spectrum of diseases that encompass dysplastic alteration to the squamous epithelium of the eye. OSSN ranges from squamous dysplasia to conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia/carcinoma in situ to invasive SCC, which is the most common ocular malignancy...

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to assess the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of patients who underwent orbital exenteration for periorbital, conjunctival, and primary intraorbital carcinomas. Additionally, we assessed the outcomes of anterior retrograde temporalis muscle flap restoration. METHODS: For all patients who had orbital exenteration in the previous five years, a non-comparative retrospective assessment of their medical records, histology, and radiographic imaging was carried out...

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been detected in eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and detection rates greatly varied across studies. This study aimed to investigate the presence of HPV in eyelid SGC and SCC among Koreans and its correlation with clinicopathological characteristics. METHODS: Surgically resected eyelid samples diagnosed as SGC or SCC from January 1999 to June 2011 were identified from the pathology database of three referral centres in Korea...

The current study's objective was to elucidate some currently unknown biological indicators to evaluate the biological nature of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). For this purpose, four different CAFs, CAFS1, CAFS2, SCC17F and MO-1000, were established using surgical specimens from oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) with different clinical malignant stages (CAFS1 and CAFS2, T2N0M0, stage II; SCC17F and MO-1000, T4aN2bM0, stage IVA). Fibroblasts unrelated to cancer (non-CAFs) were also prepared and used as controls...

The role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in eyelid and orbital malignancies is not well defined. It has been tried with good success in cases of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma but there is very limited literature on its role in cases of ocular surface squamous neoplasia. A 54-year-old man presented with gradually increasing swelling of the right upper eyelid for the past 2 years. On examination, a large friable papillary mass was found covering the entire conjunctival surface (T3N0M0). Incisional biopsy from the mass was suggestive of papillary squamous cell carcinoma...

CONTEXT.—: Ophthalmic pathology is a discipline that relies heavily on a knowledge of clinical ophthalmology. The diagnosis of ocular and periocular lesions can be challenging because some lesions and diseases are unique to this region, whereas others may demonstrate site-specific differences from nonocular counterparts. Because of these challenges, ocular and periocular biopsies are frequently referred to specialized ophthalmic pathology centers for second opinion diagnoses. OBJECTIVE...
