PURPOSE: Stem cells and progenitor cells in the central nervous system may have potential for therapeutic use in patients with degenerative diseases or after injury. Neural precursor cells can be grown in culture in the presence of mitogens as aggregates termed neurospheres (NSs), as a source of proliferating progenitor cells. Withdrawal of mitogen and allowing the NSs to adhere to a substrate is the conventional way to study the differentiation potential of the progenitor cells propagated in NSs form...

Our knowledge of otolith pathways is developing rapidly, but is still far from complete. Primary afferents from the sacculus and utricle terminate mainly in the lateral, inferior and caudal superior vestibular nuclei, and the ventral cerebellum, in particular the nodulus. Otolith signals descend via reticulo- and vestibulospinal pathways in the spinal cord to influence neck motoneurons and ascending proprioceptive afferents. Utricular information can reach the extraocular eye muscles via mono-, di-, and multisynaptic pathways, but saccular afferents probably only by multisynaptic pathways...

LRF producing neurons were characterized in the squirrel-monkey (Saimiri sciurus) and Cebus apella monkey, by means of a rabbit antiserum against unconjugated synthetic LRF, previously adsorbed on polyvinylpyrrolidone. These neurons, which vary in number according to the species and physiological or experimental conditions, are mainly concentrated in the mediobasal hypothalamic area (infundibular and premammillary nuclei in particular) and the vascular organ of the lamina terminalis. The neurons of the first group give rise to axons which terminate round the capillaries of the primary portal plexus of the infundibulum...
