Studies of sexuality have long been interested in understanding the construction of sexual subjectivity, especially amongst people whose participation in more nonnormative and kinkier forms of sex/uality have been discursively framed in terms of sexual and health "risk." Here sexual subjectivity refers to a person's sense of themself "as a sexual being who feels entitled to sexual pleasure and sexual safety, who makes active sexual choices, and who has an identity as a sexual being" (p. 6). This study explored what meanings fist-fuckers narratively draw on in understanding and interpreting their sexual subjectivity...

This study compares two parent reports, the Mental Synthesis Evaluation Checklist (MSEC) and the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC), with the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). The ATEC consists of four subscales, as follows: (1) expressive language, (2) sociability, (3) sensory awareness, and (4) health. The MSEC is complementary to the ATEC in measuring complex language comprehension. The parents of 143 autistic children, from 2 to 22 years of age (mean 6.7 ± 5.1 years), completed the MSEC and the ATEC questionnaires and a clinician assessed their CARS score...

Water in Earth's upper mantle is a minor and yet critically important component that dictates mantle properties such as strength and melting behavior. Minerals with stoichiometric water, such as those of the humite group, are important yet poorly characterized potential reservoirs for volatiles in the upper mantle. Here, we report observation of hydroxyl members of the humite group as inclusions in mantle-derived diamond. Hydroxylchondrodite and hydroxylclinohumite were found coexisting with olivine, magnesiochromite, Mg-bearing calcite, dolomite, quartz, mica, and a djerfisherite-group mineral in a diamond from Brazil...

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) present complex biochemical processes of high variability and difficult prediction. This study presents an innovative approach using Machine Learning (ML) models to predict wastewater quality parameters. In particular, the models are applied to datasets from both a simulated wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), using DHI WEST software (WEST WWTP), and a real-world WWTP database from Santa Catarina Brewery AMBEV, located in Lages/SC - Brazil (AMBEV WWTP). A distinctive aspect is the evaluation of predictive performance in continuous data scenarios and the impact of changes in WWTP operations on predictive model performance, including changes in plant layout...

Despite the considerable morbidity and mortality of yellow fever virus (YFV) infections in Brazil, our understanding of disease outbreaks is hampered by limited viral genomic data. Here, through a combination of phylogenetic and epidemiological models, we reconstructed the recent transmission history of YFV within different epidemic seasons in Brazil. A suitability index based on the highly domesticated Aedes aegypti was able to capture the seasonality of reported human infections. Spatial modeling revealed spatial hotspots with both past reporting and low vaccination coverage, which coincided with many of the largest urban centers in the Southeast...

Glanders is an anthropozoonosis caused by the bacteria Burkholderia mallei , affecting mainly equids. It has been eradicated in North America, Australia, and Western Europe, but continues to occur sporadically in countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. Its notification is mandatory by the World Organization for Animal Health. After 30 years, the disease reappeared in Brazil in 1999 and, thereafter, 1,413 outbreaks have been reported. However, the epidemiological situation of the disease in the country is not adequately known...

l-Fucose is a natural deoxy hexose found in a variety of organisms. It possesses many physiological effects and has potential applications in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. Microbial synthesis via metabolic engineering attracts increasing attention for efficient production of important chemicals. Previously, we reported the construction of a metabolically engineered Escherichia coli strain with high 2'-fucosyllactose productivity. Herein, we further introduced Bifidobacterium bifidum α-l-fucosidase via both plasmid expression and genomic integration and blocked the l-fucose assimilation pathway by deleting fucI , fucK , and rhaA ...

BACKGROUND: Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that exhibits antimicrobial and anti-toxin activities. Although S. boulardii has been clinically used for decades to treat gastrointestinal disorders, several studies have reported weak or no beneficial effects of S. boulardii administration in some cases. These conflicting results of S. boulardii efficacity may be due to nutrient deficiencies in the intestine that make it difficult for S. boulardii to maintain its metabolic activity...

Radiation therapy efficiently eliminates cancer cells and reduces tumor growth. To understand collateral agonistic and antagonistic effects of this treatment on the immune system, we examined the impact of x-ray irradiation on human T cells. We find that, in a major population of leukemic Jurkat T cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells, clinically relevant radiation doses trigger delayed oscillations of the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration. They are generated by store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) following x-ray-induced clustering of Orai1 and STIM1 and formation of a Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channel...

As social media have become a ubiquitous platform to share users' thoughts, opinions, activities, and preferences with their friends and acquaintances, the shared content across these platforms can be used to diagnose different health problems, including insomnia. Only a few recent studies have examined the prediction of insomnia from Twitter data, and we found research gaps in predicting insomnia from word usage patterns and correlations between users' insomnia and their Big 5 personality traits as derived from social media interactions...

2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL), one of the most valuable oligosaccharides in human milk, is used as an emerging food ingredient in the nutraceutical and food industries due to its numerous health benefits. Herein, the de novo and salvage pathways for GDP-fucose synthesis were engineered and optimized in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) to improve the production of 2'-FL. The de novo pathway genes encoding phosphomannomutase (ManB), mannose-1-phosphate guanyltransferase (ManC), GDP-d-mannose-4,6-dehydratase (Gmd), and GDP-l-fucose synthase (WcaG) combined with the gene from the salvage pathway encoding fucose kinase/fucose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase (Fkp) were reconstructed in two vectors to evaluate the GDP-fucose biosynthesis...

The incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has increased over recent years, particularly among young women. Partner type is believed to influence women's STI risk. However, researchers often restrict partner type to "casual" versus "committed," labels that can mask risk variability. Therefore, in this study, we identified and explored a range of sexual partner types in order to understand how young women's perceived risk and condom use intentions vary by partner type. Data were obtained during six focus groups of young women (N =25) who were recruited from a community reproductive healthcare clinic...
