To evaluate the predictive value of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio for the prediction of preeclampsia in women with preexisting diabetes mellitus. This is a monocentric retrospective observational study conducted between January 2018 and December 2020. All singleton pregnancies with preexisting diabetes mellitus, who had a dosage of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio between 30 and 34 + 6 weeks of gestation were included. The principal outcome was preeclampsia. The secondary outcomes were preterm preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, placental abruption, intrauterine fetal death, IUGR, small for gestational age and a composite outcome named "hypertensive disorder of pregnancy" including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count)...

BACKGROUND: Despite systematic thromboprophylaxis, 30% of the COVID-19 patients in intensive care units develop thrombosis. This occurrence is associated with a hypofibrinolytic state measured by thromboelastometry when adding tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to citrated whole blood for a further run for EXTEM (ROTEM). OBJECTIVES: Because hydroxyethyl starches (HESs) affect fibrin polymerization, we have assessed its potential effect on in vitro tPA-induced fibrinolysis...

Under stress or in optimum conditions, plants foster a specific guild of symbiotic microbes to strengthen pivotal functions including metabolic regulation. Despite that the role of the plant genotype in microbial selection is well documented, the potential of this genotype-specific microbial assembly in maintaining the host homeostasis remains insufficiently investigated. In this study, we aimed to assess the specificity of the foliar metabolic response of contrasting olive genotypes to microbial inoculation with wet-adapted consortia of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), to see if previously inoculated plants with indigenous or exogenous microbes would display any change in their leaf metabolome once being subjected to drought stress...

INTRODUCTION: It is well documented that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide, with smoking being the most preventable cause. Additionally, most smokers die from thrombotic-based diseases, in which platelets play a major role. To this end, because of the proven harm of smoking, several novel tobacco products such as electronic(e)-waterpipe have been gaining popularity among different sectors of the population, partly due to their "false" safety claims...

According to several international, regional, and national guidelines on hypertension, lifestyle interventions are the first-line treatment to lower blood pressure (BP). Although diet is one of the major lifestyle modifications described in hypertension guidelines, dietary fiber is not specified. Suboptimal intake of foods high in fiber, such as in Westernized diets, is a major contributing factor to mortality and morbidity of noncommunicable diseases due to higher BP and cardiovascular disease. In this review, we address this deficiency by examining and advocating for the incorporation of dietary fiber as a key lifestyle modification to manage elevated BP...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Infections caused by parasitic worms or helminth continue to pose a great burden on human and animal health, particularly in underdeveloped tropical and subtropical countries where they are endemic. Current anthelmintic drugs present serious limitations and the emergence of drug resistance has made it increasingly challenging to combat such infections (helminthiases). In Bangladesh, medicinal plants are often used by indigenous communities for the treatment of helminthiases...
