INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of neural tube defects (NTD) is high thus many children are born with a neural tube defect in Addis Ababa, and surgical closure is a commonly performed procedure at the pediatric neurosurgical specialty center. RESEARCH QUESTION: The primary aim is to study the outcomes in children undergoing surgical closure of NTDs and to identify risk factors for readmission, complications and mortality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Single-center prospective study of all surgically treated NTDs from April 2019 to May 2020...

We report 4 cases of human African trypanosomiasis that occurred in Ethiopia in 2022, thirty years after the last previously reported case in the country. Two of 4 patients died before medicine became available. We identified the infecting parasite as Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. Those cases imply human African trypanosomiasis has reemerged.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is an important cause of neurological morbidity in children and adolescents. Clinical parameters are the main diagnostic tools, especially in developing countries. Although cost-effective treatments for epilepsy are available, studies have shown that uncontrolled seizures can occur in many patients. OBJECTIVE: To assess clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes, and associated factors for controlled epilepsy among children with epilepsy who underwent follow-up at the Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, North-west Ethiopia from October 28, 2020, to April 28, 2021...

BACKGROUND: Stroke is one of the top causes of functional disability around the world. The main objective was to identify stroke-related functional outcomes and risk factors. A good functional outcome is defined as the absence of problems secondary to the stroke event, a poor functional outcome as the presence of complications, and mortality as the existence of complications. METHOD: A retrospective cohort analysis was used to observe factors in 298 eligible adult (18 or older) stroke patients who attend outpatient clinics every three months at Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital between September 2019 and August 2021 to predict outcomes...

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and, according to the Global Burden of Disease estimates in 2015, was the fastest growing neurological disorder globally with respect to associated prevalence, disability, and deaths. Information regarding the awareness, diagnosis, phenotypic characteristics, epidemiology, prevalence, risk factors, treatment, economic impact and lived experiences of people with PD from the African perspective is relatively sparse in contrast to the developed world, and much remains to be learned from, and about, the continent...

Therefore, we examined the issue under the caption, since it is the first step in planning several rehabilitation services. METHOD: A facility-based cross-sectional study was done to assess the magnitude and predictors of post-stroke limitations in basic activities of daily living (BADL) using the Barthel Index (BI) scale and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) using the Frenchay Activities Index (FAI) scale among patients who visited Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Neurology Clinic from April-October, 2022...

Belly dancer's dyskinesia is a rare movement disorder that can be classified under hyperkinetic movement disorders. It is characterized by rhythmic or semi-rhythmic contractions of the diaphragm and other abdominal muscles that are brief and involuntary that cannot be voluntarily suppressed but could be influenced by respiratory maneuvers. Belly dancer's dyskinesia in pregnancy even rarer, there have only been five reported cases. Here, we reported 19-year-old Ethiopian pregnant women who presented with oscillating movements of the abdomen that occurred at her ninth month of pregnancy...
