The current study investigated the sublingual floor of Rahmani sheep (Ovis aries). Samples from nine healthy adult sheep have been analysed using morphometrical, scanning electron microscopic (SEM), and histological examination. The sublingual floor of the sheep was formed of a rostral prefrenular part (spatula-shaped) and two lateral sublingual recesses. Right and left sublingual caruncles were asymmetrical in length and each one had a serrated border, divided into three papillae. At higher magnifications, the three papillae of the sublingual caruncle's edge were variable in shape, with other two papillae were demonstrated underneath the caruncle...

BACKGROUND: With the entire papilla preservation (EPP) technique, it is possible to perform regenerative therapy without incisions in the interdental papilla and to reduce the risk of papillary rupture. However, one limitation of the EPP is the sole access from the buccal side. Here, we present a case of periodontitis treated by the combination regenerative therapy employing the Double-sided (buccal-palatal) EPP (DEPP) technique, which adds a palatal vertical incision to the EPP. METHODS: A patient with 1-2 wall intrabony defects received the regenerative therapy using recombinant human fibroblast growth factor (rhFGF)-2 and carbonate apatite (CO3 Ap)...

To evaluate the modified star-shaped incision on gingival sulcus for reducing horizontal food impaction around implant-supported restoration. Total 24 patients receiving bone-level implant placement were enrolled, a star-shaped incision was made on the gingiva sulcus before the placement of zirconia crown. Follow-up examination was carried out 3 and 6 months after final restoration, respectively. Assessment of soft tissue includes papilla height, modified plaque index, modified sulcus bleeding index, periodontal depth, gingival biotype and gingival margin level...

The biggest challenge during periodontal regeneration in the anterior region is the prevention of soft-tissue recession. Minimally invasive surgeries, particularly papilla preservation techniques and soft-tissue augmentation, may significantly reduce such postoperative soft-tissue recession. This article presents the vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access approach for periodontal regeneration in the anterior region. A subperiosteal tunnel prepared from a single vertical vestibular incision adjacent to the defect is used for debridement, enamel matrix derivative application, defect grafting with cortico-cancellous tuberosity bone, and insertion of the connective tissue graft...

Periodontal regeneration therapy has developed tremendously since its inception, becoming a clinical tool to preserve the periodontally compromised natural dentition. More challenging esthetic defects can often benefit from the combination of bone and soft tissue regeneration, such as the application of connective tissue grafts (CTGs) and techniques that approach the bone defect without interdental papillae incisions. However, periodontal tissue regeneration vertical to the alveolar bone crest in cases of severe periodontitis, with loss of both soft and hard tissues, has not been predictably established...

BACKGROUND: Symmetry is critical in perceived attractiveness, especially in female faces. The palate determines the teeth' alignment and supports facial soft tissues. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the effects of sex, orthodontic treatment, age, and heritability on the directional, anti-, and fluctuational asymmetry in the digital palatal model. METHODS: The palate of 113 twins, 86 female and 27 male subjects, with and without previous orthodontic treatment, were scanned by the Emerald (Planmeca) intraoral scanner...

A woman in her 60s underwent endoscopic sphincterotomy for choledocholithiasis. Unfortunately, post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis occurred. In addition, huge walled-off necrosis (WON) appeared as a late complication. For the infected WON, endoscopic ultrasound-guided fistuloplasty and endoscopic necrosectomy were performed, and a double pigtail plastic stent (PS) (7Fr, 7 cm) was placed to prevent a recurrence. Plain computed tomography conducted two years later showed that the stent implanted for WON had deviated...

INTRODUCTION: Papilla reformation is one of the most difficult and elusive surgical techniques for clinicians. Although it involves similar tenets to those applied for soft tissue grafting at recession defects, crafting a small tissue in restricted space remains unpredictable. Numerous grafting techniques have been developed to correct interproximal and buccal recession, but so far, only a limited number of techniques have been prescribed for interproximal remediation. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes in detail a modern technique (the vertical interproximal tunnel approach) for reforming the interproximal papilla and treating interproximal recession...

The present study aimed to investigate the immunolocalization of vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT) 1 and 2, and proteins associated with exocytosis, i.e., core components of the soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor complex (synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa, syntaxin 1, and vesicle-associated membrane protein 2) and synaptotagmin-1 (Syt1), in incisive papillary taste buds of rats using double-indirect immunofluorescence. No VGLUT1 immunoreactivity was observed, whereas VGLUT2-immunoreactive punctate products were closely associated with guanine nucleotide-binding protein G(t) subunit α3-immmunoreactive cells in taste buds...

The size of adult male giraffes ( Giraffa giraffa angolensis ) far exceeds the size of the females. At the Namutoni waterholes in Etosha National Park, bulls were seen many times each day screening adult females for their pending sexual receptivity by provoking them to urinate; this mainly involved sniffing their genitalia. If the female accedes to the male's invitation, she widens her hindleg stance, braces her body, and then urinates, usually for at least five seconds. The male places his muzzle and tongue in the urine stream, and then performs flehmen, often raising his head high in the air...

The lingual frenulum is a submucosal component significantly involved in the mobility of the tongue. In the case of short lingual frenulum, different surgical approaches have been proposed. Atmospheric plasma is a thermal technique of vaporization or sublimation of the superficial tissues, without going deep, and the resulting fine carbonized layer avoids bleeding. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of atmospheric plasma (voltaic arc dermabrasion) for the frenectomy of a short lingual frenulum...

Nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is a non-odontogenic, developmental epithelial cyst that accounts for 1% of maxillary cysts. It often arises due to the spontaneous proliferation of the epithelial tissue remnants, although trauma, bacterial infection, and mucous retention may also trigger the proliferation. Owing to its slow-growing, asymptomatic nature, the cyst is often discovered as an accidental finding during routine clinical and radiographic examinations. However, the majority of cases present as a tiny, asymptomatic swelling just posterior to the palatine papillae...

BACKGROUND: Periampullary diverticula (PAD) often detected during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and ERCP remains the primary approach to treating bile duct stones, and papilla cannulation plays a critical role in the success of ERCP. PAD can reduce the cannulation success rate. Needle knife precut greatly promoted the clinical application of precut incision. However, this approach also increases the risk of various adverse events. The present study aimed to compare the perioperative outcomes of pancreatic duct guide wire-assisted needle knife precut and conventional needle knife precut for PAD with difficult cannulation...
