UNLABELLED: This work is devoted to the study of the features of oxidative metabolism of hepatocytes in diabetic mice and those under the vitamin D3 action. We found out that a 2.5-fold decrease of 25OHD3 content in the serum was caused by chronic hyperglycemia in diabetes. Intensification of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitrogen monoxide (NO) production, protein oxidative modifications (detected by the contents of carbonyl groups and 3-nitrotyrosine), accumulation of diene conjugates and TBA-reactive products of lipid peroxidation, and the decreased level of free SH-groups of low molecular weight compounds in the liver were accompanied by development of vitamin D3 deficient state...

Evidence for the glyoxylate cycle in the mammalian rat liver was sought. Activity of two unique glyoxylate cycle enzymes, isocitrate lyase and malate synthase, was found in rat liver homogenates. Vitamin D3 treatment of rachitic animals produced a five- and fourfold increase, respectively, in the activity of these enzymes. Vitamin D3 also increased the peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation and the accumulation of glycogen in liver slices in the presence of palmitate. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF beta) produced by osteoblasts is present in high levels in bone and influences bone formation, replication of bone cells, and expression of osteoblast protein products. Interactions between bone active hormones and locally released and activated TGF beta were studied by examining the influence of TGF beta preincubation on PTH, calcitonin (CT), and vitamin D receptors in an osteoblastic cell line (UMR 106-06).
