The purpose of this study was to report the effectiveness of preoperative transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) of musculoskeletal tumors in terms of blood loss and functional outcomes. Patients who underwent preoperative TAE of hypervascular musculoskeletal tumors between January 2018 and December 2021 were retrospectively included. The patients' characteristics, TAE procedure details, degree of post-TAE devascularization, surgical outcomes in terms of red blood cell transfusion and functional results were collected...

BACKGROUND: The pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a role in cancer development and progression, but research into the predictive value of IL-6 on postoperative outcome in soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is scarce. The purpose of this study is to investigate the predictive value of serum IL-6 level for the achievement of assumed (post)operative outcome after STS surgery, the so-called textbook outcome. METHODS: Preoperative IL-6 serum levels were collected in all patients with a STS at first presentation between February 2020 and November 2021...

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) in men with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 35 kg/m2 is considered technically challenging. We conducted a retrospective matched-pair analysis to compare the oncological and functional outcomes of RARP in men with BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 . We interrogated our prospectively maintained RARP database and identified 1273 men who underwent RARP from January 2018 till June 2021. Among them, 43 had BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 , and 1230 had BMI < 35 kg/m2 ...

OBJECTIVE: Repair or replacement remains debatable in rheumatic heart disease. To regain optimal mean transvalvular pressure gradients and end-diastolic peak flow velocity, the modified release technique combined peeling in the anterior leaflet and separated the shortened chordal. In the end, the short and mid-term outcomes of the modified release technique were evaluated. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a series of 128 patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis, from January 2018 to July 2021 in our center...

INTRODUCTION: Tamai zone 1 replantation poses a challenge due to the very small size of the vascular structures; often there is no vein for anastomosis. Replantation may have to be done with only an arterial anastomosis. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the success of replantation by combining external bleeding and hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) in Tamai zone 1 replantation. METHODS: Between January 2017 and October 2021, 17 finger replantation patients who underwent artery-only anastomosis due to Tamai zone 1 amputation received 20 sessions of HBOT with external bleeding after the 24th postoperative hour...

We retrospectively investigated the natural course of hemoglobin levels after allogenic blood transfusion in total knee arthroplasty. All patients were treated according to the same clinical pathway, and blood tests were performed on the same day. All blood tests were done on pre-op, immediate post-op, midnight of op day, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 11th day after surgery. Of the total 593 cases, a total of 197 cases (33.2%) were performed within 3 days of surgery. Hemoglobin level was significantly lowest on the 3rd day after surgery and tended to increase afterwards in the non-transfusion group...

Introduction and Objectives Mini-PCNL has gained popularity over the last decade due to its stone free rate comparable to traditional PCNL but with decreased risk of complications. While the data on mini-PCNL has been favorable thus far, no study today has evaluated outcomes in obese patients. Methods All patients undergoing mini-PCNL at our institution since we began its use in 2019 were included in this study. Mini-PCNL was defined as access sheath ≤ 22 French in size. An obese group with BMI ≥ 30 was compared to a non-obese group with BMI <30...

OBJECTIVES: Laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy (LSH) is a possible treatment for patients with benign uterine disease. Once the hysterectomy has been completed, morcellation and extraction of the corpus uteri is a crucial step of the procedure. We here present a case series to evaluate the feasibility of the in-bag transvaginal specimen retrieval following LSH. STUDY DESIGN: We report a case series of consecutive patients who underwent LSH followed by in-bag transvaginal specimen retrieval...

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) and postoperative hemorrhage are unavoidable complications of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). At present, more and more patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) need long-term antithrombotic therapy before operation due to cardiovascular diseases or cerebrovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of preoperative antithrombotic therapy history on lower extremity VTE and bleeding after TURP...

BACKGROUND: Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a rare autoimmune hemolytic anemia characterized by agglutination of red blood cells at temperatures below the normal core body temperature. In patients with CAD, splenectomy is not indicated because of its low therapeutic effect on hemolytic anemia induced by extravascular hemolysis. Herein, we report a case of refractory hemolytic anemia with CAD successfully managed with splenectomy. CLINICAL CASE: A 60-year-old man visited a municipal hospital with the chief complaint of fatigue...

BACKGROUND: The development process of gastrointestinal anastomosis is from complex to simple, from two layers to one layer, from extramucosal anastomosis to seromuscular anastomosis. With the rapid development of anastomosis instruments, the anastomosis process becomes more and more convenient. However, relevant studies have shown that related complications such as anastomotic leakage still occur. This study sought to investigate the feasibility and safety of seromuscular layer sutures in the reinforcement of esophagojejunostomy after open radical total gastrectomy...

BACKGROUND: Hybrid coronary revascularization (HCR) is a technique that merges coronary artery bypass grafting surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) approaches for the treatment of multivessel coronary artery disease. The surgical component of the procedure is minimally invasive and can be done using robotic technology that avoids the need for sternotomy. Our objective is to study all patients who underwent robotic-assisted HCR (RHCR) to evaluate the feasibility and safety of the procedure during the establishment phase...

One of the leading causes of female mortality worldwide is ovarian carcinoma. It can be divided into five main types: high-grade serous, endometrioid, clear cell, mucinous and low-grade serous carcinomas. These tumors represent distinct diseases and prognoses. Though the conventional treatment using platinum-based chemotherapy typically results in an adequate initial response, recurrence is not uncommon. The present case report deals with treating one such platinum-sensitive first relapse of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma with a poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor...

BACKGROUND: Routine chemical venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis for liver surgery remains controversial, and often delayed post-operatively due to perceived bleeding risk. This study asked whether patients undergoing hepatectomy for colorectal metastases (CRM) were at risk from VTE pre-operatively, and the impact of hepatectomy on that risk. METHODS: Single-centre prospective observational cohort study of patients undergoing open hepatectomy for CRM, comparing pre-, peri- and post-operative haemostatic variables...

Introduction: Spinal dumbbell-shaped tumors are rare, usually benign tumors with intraspinal and paravertebral components connected through intervertebral foramen. Complete excision is often performed through traditional open surgery (TOS). The efficacy and long-term outcomes of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) have not been reported to date in resection of dumbbell-shaped spinal tumors. Purpose: The purpose was to evaluate the efficacy and long-term outcomes of minimally invasive resection combined with unilateral transforaminal intervertebral fusion (TIF) through comparing with TOS in the treatment of spinal dumbbell-shaped tumors...
