Sometimes healthcare professionals conscientiously refuse to treat patients despite the patient requesting legal, medically indicated treatments within the professionals' remit. Recently, there has been a proliferation of views using the concept of public reason to specify which conscientious refusals of treatment should be accommodated. Four such views are critically assessed, namely, those of Robert Card, Massimo Reichlin, David Scott, and Doug McConnell. This paper argues that McConnell's view has advantages over the other approaches because it combines the requirement that healthcare professionals publicly justify the grounds of their conscientious refusals of treatment with the requirement that those grounds align with minimally decent healthcare...

The question of what the ancient life cycle of tetrapods was like forms a key component in understanding the origin of land vertebrates. The existence of distinct larval forms, as exemplified by many lissamphibians, and their transformation into adults is an important aspect in this field. The temnospondyls, the largest clade of Palaeozoic-Mesozoic non-amniote tetrapods, covered a wide ecomorphological range from fully aquatic to terrestrial taxa. In various species, rich ontogenetic data have accumulated over the past 130 years, permitting the study of early phases of temnospondyl development...

The Darwin-Bateman paradigm predicts that females enhance their fitness by being choosy and mating with high-quality males, while males should compete to mate with as many females as possible. In many species, males enhance their fitness by defending females and/or resources used by females. That is, males directly defend access to mating opportunities. However, paternity analyses have repeatedly shown that females in most species mate polyandrously, which contradicts traditional expectations that male defensive behaviours lead to monandry...

Species are distributed in predictable ways in geographic spaces. The three principal factors that determine geographic distributions of species are biotic interactions (B), abiotic conditions (A), and dispersal ability or mobility (M). A species is expected to be present in areas that are accessible to it and that contain suitable sets of abiotic and biotic conditions for it to persist. A species' probability of presence can be quantified as a combination of responses to B, A, and M via ecological niche modeling (ENM; also frequently referred to as species distribution modeling or SDM)...

Empathy is a complex, multi-dimensional capacity that facilitates the sharing and understanding of others' emotions. As our closest living relatives, bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees (P. troglodytes) provide an opportunity to explore the origins of hominin social cognition, including empathy. Despite certain assumptions that bonobos and chimpanzees may differ empathically, these species appear to overlap considerably in certain socio-emotional responses related to empathy. However, few studies have systematically tested for species variation in Pan empathic or socio-emotional tendencies...

A CSD search in the Cambridge Crystallographic Database for the substructure N-Cα H-C'(═O)-N gave 24,180 peptide structures for analysis of the pyramidalization of the sp2 -hybridized carboxamide group C'(═O)NCα , which had not been investigated before. The dependence of the pyramidalization θ = O-N-C'-Cα on the rotation angle ψ = O═C'-Cα -N about bond C'-Cα resulted in a curve with three maxima, three minima, and six zero-crossings. Surprisingly, the ψ/θ analysis of the individual amino acid building blocks showed that all of them exhibited similar curves, irrespective of their different R substituents...

The response of the trimethylammonium-iodinechloride and diiodide (TMA-ICl/I2 ) crystal structures have been examined under high pressure using neutron powder diffraction. TMA-ICl exhibits impressive pressure-driven electronic flexibility, where the N⋯I-Cl interactions progressively encompass all the distances represented in analogous structures recorded in the Cambridge Structural Database. Comparison with the TMA-I2 complex reveals that this flexibility is owed to the electronegativity of the chlorine atom which induces increased distortion of the iodine electron cloud...

BACKGROUND: As well as being associated with serious negative health outcomes, smoking has been reported to have an array of physiological and psychological effects, including effects on mood and cognitive function. Post-cessation, loss of such effects (including temporary deficits in cognitive function) have been cited as reasons for resumption of smoking. The effects of e-cigarettes and nicotine delivered by e-cigarettes on these functions have not been widely researched but may play a role in the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as a satisfactory alternative to combustible cigarettes for people who smoke, and in encouraging individuals who would otherwise continue to smoke, to transition to e-cigarettes...

AIMS: Currently, there is no reliable biomarker to detect pre-heart failure in humans. An early risk signal is an elevated left atrial pressure (LAP) and preliminary results from animal studies strongly suggest the neuropeptide neuromedin U (NMU) is released in response to this increase in LAP. However, it is unknown whether NMU is elevated in patients with heart failure. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess if NMU levels are elevated in human cases of heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-four serum samples were obtained from patients in stage II and III heart failure from the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge UK and tested using a selective NMU-ELISA; the data were compared with serum obtained commercially from self-declared healthy donors...

Perylene (PER) is a prototype of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which play a pivotal role in various functional and electronic materials due to favorable molecule-to-molecule overlaps, which enhance electronic transport. This study provides guidelines regarding the impact of molecular charge on pancake bonding, a form of strong π-stacking interaction. Pancake bonding significantly boosts interaction energies within the monopositive dimer ([(C20 H12 )2 ]•+ or PER2 + ), crucial for stabilizing aggregation and crystal formation...
