To determine the effect of patient off-centering on point organ radiation dose measurements in a human cadaver scanned with routine abdominal CT protocol. A human cadaver (88 years, body-mass-index 20 kg/m(2)) was scanned with routine abdominal CT protocol on 128-slice dual source MDCT (Definition Flash, Siemens). A total of 18 scans were performed using two scan protocols (a) 120 kV-200 mAs fixed-mA (CTDIvol 14 mGy) (b) 120 kV-125 ref mAs (7 mGy) with automatic exposure control (AEC, CareDose 4D) at three different positions (a) gantry isocenter, (b) upward off-centering and (c) downward off-centering...

PURPOSE: A new Joint Commission element of performance effective July 2015 requires incidents where the radiation dose index exceeds a defined level be reviewed, analyzed and compared to external benchmarks. This work offers a comprehensive review of the CT exams in which the notification level was exceeded and the reason at one academic medical center. This review may help other institutions set reference levels at clinically relevant values. METHODS: Radiation Dose Structured Reports from each of the 5 diagnostic CT scanners at our institution are automatically sent to our radiation dose index monitoring software platform, Radimetrics from Bayer Healthcare...

PURPOSE: Three patient radiation dose monitoring and tracking (PRDMT) systems have been in operation at this institution for the past 6 months. There are useful information that should be disseminated to those who are considering installation of PRDMT programs. In addition, there are "problems" uncovered in the process of estimating fluoroscopic "peak" skin dose (PSD), especially, for those patients who received interventional angiographic studies and in conjunction with surgical procedures...

PURPOSE: The Joint Commission requires institutions to consider patient's age and recent imaging exams when deciding on the most appropriate type of imaging exam. Additionally, knowing patient's imaging history can help prevent duplicate scans. Radiation dose management software affords new opportunities to identify and utilize patients with high cumulative doses as one proxy for subsequent review of imaging history and opportunities in avoiding redundant exams. METHODS: Using dose management software (Radimetrics, Bayer Healthcare) a total of 72073 CT examinations performed from Jan 2015 to Jan 2016 were examined to categorize patients with a cumulative effective dose of 100 mSv and above...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective randomized controlled study was to compare 2 techniques for radiation dose reduction in non-contrast-enhanced pediatric chest computed tomography (CT): low peak kilovoltage imaging at 70 kVp and spectral beam shaping at 100 kVp using a dedicated tin filter (100-kVp Sn). MATERIALS AND METHODS: All chest CT examinations were performed on a third-generation dual-source CT system (SOMATOM Force; Siemens Healthineers, Germany). Fifty children (mean age, 6...

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to systematically compare organ-specific-radiation dose levels between a radiation dose optimized perfusion CT (dVPCT) protocol of the liver and a tri-phasic standard CT protocol of the liver using a Monte-Carlo-Simulation-based analysis platform. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The complete CT data of 52 patients (41 males; mean age 65 ± 12) with suspected HCC that underwent dVPCT examinations on a 3rd generation dual-source CT (Somatom Force, Siemens) with a dose optimized tube voltage of 70 kVp or 80 kVp were exported to an analysis platform (Radimetrics, Bayer)...

OBJECTIVE: Systemic lupus erythematosus patients are frequently evaluated for chest pain and may have multiple pulmonary embolism (PE) computed tomography (CT) scans. This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of pulmonary embolism in the University of Michigan Lupus Cohort patients who have undergone PE CT scans and to estimate the associated increased risk of breast and lung cancer from radiation exposure. METHODS: We reviewed records of patients in the University of Michigan Lupus Cohort (n = 854) and determined the number and outcome of PE CT scans...
