This study attempts to answer the question if any level of head and neck circulation takes a part in development of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) and hearing and equilibrium impairments. Condition of large blood vessels was examined by Color-Doppler ultrasound, and carotid and ophthalmic arteries were included. The microcirculatory changes were examined directly by fundus photography and fluorescein angiography and indirectly testing hearing and equilibrium. The study group included 40 patients (21 females, 19 males) aging from 53 to 84 years with different stages of ARMD...

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential of a novel deterministic solver, Attila, for external photon beam radiotherapy dose calculations. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Two hypothetical cases for prostate and head-and-neck cancer photon beam treatment plans were calculated using Attila and EGSnrc Monte Carlo simulations. Open beams were modeled as isotropic photon point sources collimated to specified field sizes. The sources had a realistic energy spectrum calculated by Monte Carlo for a Varian Clinac 2100 operated in a 6-MV photon mode...

BACKGROUND: Macular translocation following 360 degrees retinotomy is a possible surgical treatment of patients with age-related macular degeneration. However, it produces important subjective disturbances with diplopia and head tilt due to cyclodeviation. Complex surgical procedures involving both oblique muscles and two or four recti have been advocated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four symptomatic patients with macular translocation underwent counter-rotating surgery by very large recession and advancement of both oblique muscles of the affected eye...

REVIEW
D A Cooper, A L Eldridge, J C Peters
Key epidemiologic studies show associations between high dietary intakes of certain carotenoid-containing fruits and vegetables and reduced risk of prostate cancer, breast cancer, head and neck cancers, cardiovascular disease, and age-related macular degeneration, although overall the evidence is inconsistent. Little is known about the potential biochemical mechanisms whereby carotenoids might protect against disease, and human intervention trials are limited to high dose beta-carotene, which is not protective against lung cancer or cardiovascular disease...
