Peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) is cytologically and phenotypically heterogeneous. Retinoic acid-related orphan receptor-γt (RORγt) is a transcription factor that regulates the differentiation of naïve CD4+ helper T-cells to Th17 cells. In the present study, we immunohistochemically confirmed the expression of RORγt in PTCL-NOS. Pathological and clinical investigations were performed for 170 cases of PTCL-NOS. RORγt-positive cases accounted for 17.6% (30/170) of the total cases and they showed a significantly higher frequency of CD8 positivity (P=...

Anemia is an independent risk factor for functional decline and mortality among older adults. Since mild anemia in older people is often under-diagnosed and ignored, its prevalence needs precise determination and recognition of predisposing factors. None of the previous studies based on the data obtained from the representative elderly population identified the influence of socio-economic factors on the prevalence of anemia. PolSenior was a cross-sectional population-based study performed on the nationally representative sample of Polish seniors...

BACKGROUND: Commercial use of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers (CNT/F) in composites and electronics is increasing; however, little is known about health effects among workers. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 108 workers at 12 U.S. CNT/F facilities. We evaluated chest symptoms or respiratory allergies since starting work with CNT/F, lung function, resting blood pressure (BP), resting heart rate (RHR), and complete blood count (CBC) components. METHODS: We conducted multi-day, full-shift sampling to measure background-corrected elemental carbon (EC) and CNT/F structure count concentrations, and collected induced sputum to measure CNT/F in the respiratory tract...

Background: Successful non-operative management (NOM) of blunt splenic trauma is enhanced with splenic angioembolization (SAE). Patients may still require splenectomy post-SAE for splenic infarction/necrosis. Prior studies have used white blood cell count (WBC), platelet count (PLT), and PLT:WBC ratio after splenectomy to predict complications, but none have evaluated these findings prior to splenectomy in patients who have undergone SAE. Changes in these values may indicate clinically significant splenic infarction, facilitating management of these patients...

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow disorders encompass a group of diseases characterised by reduced production of red cells, white cells, and platelets, or defects in their function, or both. The most common bone marrow disorder is myelodysplastic syndrome. Thrombocytopenia, a low platelet count, commonly occurs in people with bone marrow failure. Platetet transfusions are routinely used in people with thrombocytopenia secondary to bone marrow failure disorders to treat or prevent bleeding. Myelodysplastic syndrome is currently the most common reason for receiving a platelet transfusion in some Western countries...

This study was designed to compare the complete blood count values of opioid users (N = 61) and healthy subjects (N = 61), particularly monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). PLR, MLR, and percentage of monocyte (MONO%) were significantly lower in opioid use disorder (OUD) group (P = 0.012, P = 0.005, P = 0.000). The area under the ROC curve of MLR and PLR levels for OUD was 0.349 and 0.368. MONO% correlated with substance use duration. Measurements like lymphocyte-related ratios and MONO% in opioid use can be important in substance monitoring, detection, and differentiation of acute and chronic conditions...
