Criegee intermediates play an important role in the oxidizing capacity of the Earth's troposphere. Although extensive studies have been conducted on Criegee intermediates in the past decade, their kinetics with radical species remain underexplored. We investigated the kinetics of the simplest Criegee intermediate, CH2 OO, with the methyl peroxy radical, CH3 O2 , as a model system to explore the reactivities of Criegee intermediates with peroxy radicals. Using a multipass UV-Vis spectrometer coupled to a pulsed-laser photolysis flow reactor, CH2 OO and CH3 O2 were generated simultaneously from the photolysis of CH2 I2 /CH3 I/O2 /N2 mixtures with CH2 OO measured directly near 340 nm...

Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury (CI-AKI) remains a frequent iatrogenic condition since radiological procedures using intra-vascular iodinated contrast media (CM) are being widely administered for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Despite the improvement of the medical healthcare system worldwide, CI-AKI is still associated with direct short-term and indirect long-term outcomes including increased morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with underlying pre-existing renal function impairment, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes that could rapidly progress into Chronic Kidney Disease...

Zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs) have been recognized as a promising energy storage device due to their high energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, the development of ZIBs is hindered by the shuttle effect of polyiodides which results in capacity degradation and poor cycling performance. Inspired by the ability of starch to form inclusion compounds with iodine, we propose to use a starch gel on the cathode to suppress the shuttle of polyiodides. Herein, porous carbon is utilized as a host for iodine species and provides an excellent conductive network, while starch gel is used as another host to suppress polyiodides shuttle, resulting in improved battery performance...

Dual-energy CT (DECT) is an innovative technology that is increasingly widespread in clinical practice. DECT allows for tissue characterization beyond that of conventional CT as imaging is performed using different energy spectra that can help differentiate tissues based on their specific attenuation properties at different X-ray energies. The most employed post-processing applications of DECT include virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs), iodine density maps, virtual non-contrast images (VNC), and virtual non-calcium (VNCa) for bone marrow edema (BME) detection...

Non-radical activation of persulfate (PS) by photocatalysts is an effective approach for removing organic pollutants from aqueous environments. In this study, a novel Bi2 O3 /BiO1.3 I0.4 heterojunction was synthesized using a facile solvothermal approach and used for the first time for non-radical activation of PS to degrade propranolol (PRO) in the presence of visible light. The findings found that the degradation rate of PRO in the Bi2 O3 /BiO1.3 I0.4 /PS system was significantly increased from 19% to more than 90% within 90 min compared to the Bi2 O3 /BiO1...

Food texture perception is dynamic, influenced by food properties and oral processing. Using the Repeatable Dual Extrusion Cell (RDEC), the oral processing dynamics of surimi gel with different corn starch concentrations (0-15%) in the presence of 1 ml artificial saliva or water were studied. The force-time curve showed increased peak forces with higher corn starch concentrations, peaking significantly at 10%, then decreasing at 15%. Salivary amylase played a crucial role in gel sample degradation, especially in samples with 5% starch, with a work value depletion ratio of 0...

Grain boundaries (GBs) have a significant role in polycrystalline perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, there is ongoing debate regarding the impact of GBs on the performance and long-term stability of PSCs. Employing the first-principles molecular dynamics for perovskites, the iodine vacancy defect migrations both in bulk and at GBs are investigated. i) The positive iodine vacancy (VI + ) is found that have both lower formation energy (1.4 eV) and activation energy (0.18 eV) than those of neutral iodine vacancy (VI ), statistically...

Molecular imaging is pivotal in evaluating and managing patients with different thyroid cancer histotypes. The existing, pathology-based, risk stratification systems can be usefully refined, by incorporating tumor-specific molecular and molecular imaging biomarkers with theranostic value, allowing patient-specific treatment decisions. Molecular imaging with different radioactive iodine isotopes (ie, I131 , I123 , I124 ) is a central component of differentiated carcinoma (DTC)'s risk stratification while [18 F]F-fluorodeoxyglucose ([18 F]FDG) PET/CT is interrogated about disease aggressiveness and presence of distant metastases...

A total of 95 subjects with NCF (74% of women) and 95 individuals with MCI (77% of women) aged 50-70 years were studied. Densitometric parameters were evaluated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry methods. Eating habits were assessed using the food frequency questionnaire and 3-day diary records, and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) intake was calculated...

L-Acetylcarnitine (ALC), a versatile compound, has demonstrated beneficial effects in depression, Alzheimer's disease, cognitive impairment, and other conditions. This study focuses on its antithyroid activity. The precursor molecule, L-carnitine, inhibited the uptake of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), and it is possible that ALC may reduce the iodination process of T3 and T4. Currently, antithyroid drugs are used to control the excessive production of thyroid hormones (TH) through various mechanisms: (i) forming electron donor-acceptor complexes with molecular iodine, (ii) eliminating hydrogen peroxide, and (iii) inhibiting the enzyme thyroid peroxidase...

Thermal ablation has been commonly used as an effective treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma; however, peri-necrotic tumor residues after ablation play a significant role in tumor recurrence and poor prognosis. Therefore, developing agents that can effectively target and eliminate residual tumors is critically needed. Chemical modifications in RNAs play crucial roles in diversifying their structures and regulating numerous biochemical processes. Since the 1990s, several hydrophobic prenyl-modifications have been discovered in various RNAs. Prenyl groups serve as precursors for terpenes and many other biological molecules. The processes of prenylation in different macromolecules have been extensively studied. We introduce here a novel chemical biology toolkit that not only labels i6A, a prenyl-modified RNA residue, by leveraging the unique reactivity of the prenyl group, but also provides a general strategy to incorporate fluorescence functionalities into RNAs for molecular tracking purposes...

Radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to break chemical bonds in cancer cells, thereby causing DNA damage and leading to cell death. The therapeutic effectiveness can be further increased by making the tumor cells more sensitive to radiation. Here, we investigate the role of the initial halogen atom core hole on the photofragmentation dynamics of 2-bromo-5-iodo-4-nitroimidazole, a potential bifunctional radiosensitizer. Bromine and iodine atoms were included in the molecule to increase the photoionization cross-section of the radiosensitizer at higher photon energies...
