To investigate the safety of focused ultrasound (FUS) partial ablation on the pancreas of Sprague Dawley® (SD) rats by histopathological examination of the outcome and investigation of glycometabolism function changes after local ablation. A total of 135 healthy SD rats were randomly divided into three groups (n=45 of each): FUS ½ group, FUS ¼ group, and control group. Levels of serum amylase was measured using the enzyme dynamics method, fasting blood glucose was measured by the glucose oxidase-peroxidase method, fasting serum insulin was measured by direct chemiluminescence assay, and an ELISA was used to measure fasting serum glucagon immediately after treatment, and at 2h, 3days, 1, 2, 3 and 4weeks, 3 and 6months after FUS ablation...

Type I diabetes mellitus is characterized by the destruction of the insulin producing beta cells within the pancreas by the immune system. After the success of Edmonton protocol, islet transplantation has shown to be a promising therapy, but with the Achilles´ heel of the need of using immunosuppressive drugs. Currently, cell encapsulation technology represents a real alternative to protect transplanted islets from the host´s immune attack. Although preliminary in vitro studies with encapsulated cells have been traditionally performed under static conditions in terms of viability and efficiency, these static cultures do not represent a close approach to in vivo environments...

The ACR Incidental Findings Committee (IFC) presents recommendations for managing pancreatic cysts that are incidentally detected on CT or MRI. These recommendations represent an update from the pancreatic component of the JACR 2010 white paper on managing incidental findings in the adrenal glands, kidneys, liver, and pancreas. The Pancreas Subcommittee-which included abdominal radiologists, a gastroenterologist, and a pancreatic surgeon-developed this algorithm. The recommendations draw from published evidence and expert opinion, and were finalized by informal iterative consensus...

Various independent studies indicate involvement of different populations of bone marrow-derived stem cells in the process of tissue regeneration. In inflammatory disorders bone marrow stem cells are mobilized into peripherial blood and further to different organs, where they take part in tissue regeneration. Experimental studies have shown that bone marrow stem cells play a pivotal role in regeneration of endo and egzocrine pancreas and have a role in pathogenesis of pancreatitis, diabetes and pancreatic neoplasms...

Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasms (ITPNs) are rare pancreatic neoplasms accounting for ~0.4% of pancreatic tumors. However, their clinicopathological characteristics have not been clearly determined and the number of available clinical studies on this type of tumor is limited at present. Due to the rare incidence of ITPN, diagnosis is often delayed. We herein present a unique case of a 38-year-old man who was diagnosed with ITPN accompanied with invasive carcinoma of the pancreas and underwent total pancreatectomy...

Adenocarcinoma of the pancreas has a poor prognosis. At present, no relevant personalized targets have been identified. Sequencing studies have implicated gene alterations of disruptor of telomeric silencing 1 like histone lysine methyltransferase (DOT1L) in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. DOT1L is part of the histone modification system and catalyzes methylation of H3K79, which is crucial in cell signaling and DNA damage repair. DOT1L is considered to be a target of therapy in mixed lineage leukemia gene-deficient leukemia cases and a potential target in breast carcinoma...

The medical management of pain in chronic pancreatitis continues to pose significant challenges for clinicians caring for these patients. There are increasing data, suggesting that pain in chronic pancreatitis is largely due to peripheral and central sensitization that evolves, over time, as a result of nociceptive afferent associated with chronic inflammation and fibrosis of the pancreas. In many instances, patients rapidly progress to requiring opioid analgesics for the adequate treatment of pain despite the unequivocal risks associated with the long-term use of these drugs...

During routine dissection, duplication of main pancreatic duct extending from body to head region of pancreas was observed in a 78-year-old formalin fixed male cadaver. Main pancreatic duct gave a prominent branch which joined back the parent duct in head resulting in the formation of a closed loop. This gave the appearance of focal duplication in the form of a closed loop, an unusual variant. This was an incidental finding. Such cases usually remain asymptomatic; however, if undetected may be the cause of postoperative pancreatic fistula following pancreaticobiliary surgery...

Duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are uncommon. Tumors arising from the first and the second part of the duodenum (DI and DII, respectively) can be wrongly diagnosed as pancreatic mass. We present a case of a 59-year-old woman who came with abdominal pain and severe upper gastrointestinal bleeding (hemoglobin 3.5 g÷dL). A solid, heterogeneously enhancing neoplasm in the head of the pancreas was revealed preoperatively by an abdominal computed tomography scan. A diagnosis of GIST was suggested...

Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) aggravates the course of acute pancreatitis (AP). Intestinal barrier dysfunction is implicated in the pathogenesis of AP during which dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota contributes to the dysfunction in intestinal barrier. However, few studies focus on the changes in intestine during HTG-related acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP). Here, we investigated the changes in intestinal microbiota and Paneth cell antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in HTG-related ANP (HANP) in rats. Rats fed a high-fat diet to induce HTG and ANP was induced by retrograde injection of 3...

Postinflammatory pancreatic pseudocysts are one of the most common complications of acute pancreatitis. In most cases, pseudocysts self-absorb in the course of treatment of pancreatitis. In some patients, pancreatic pseudocysts are symptomatic and cause pain, problems with gastrointestinal transit, and other complications. In such cases, drainage or resection should be performed. Among the invasive methods, mini invasive procedures like endoscopic transmural drainage through the wall of the stomach or duodenum play an important role...

Background and Aims: Pancreatitis remains a diagnostic challenge in patients with mild to moderate disease, with current imaging modalities inadequate. Given the prominent macrophage infiltrate in chronic pancreatitis, we hypothesized that (125)I-iodo-DPA-713 (iodoDPA), a small-molecule radiotracer that specifically targets macrophages, could be used with single photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) to image pancreatic inflammation in a relevant experimental model. Methods: Chronic pancreatitis was induced in C57BL/6 mice with cerulein and were contrasted with vehicle-injected controls...

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) protects cells from oxidative damage. NQO1 has been reported to be upregulated in numerous solid tumors, suggesting a role in carcinogenesis and tumor progression. The present study attempted to investigate the clinical prognostic significance of NQO1 overexpression in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). A total of 181 tissue specimens were studied, including 126 PDAC and 55 normal pancreas specimens, which were selected for immunohistochemical staining of NQO1 protein...

Data-driven respiratory gating techniques were developed to correct for respiratory motion in PET studies, without the help of external motion tracking systems. Due to the greatly increased image noise in gated reconstructions, it is desirable to develop a data-driven event-by-event respiratory motion correction method. In this study, using the Centroid-of-distribution (COD) algorithm, we established a data-driven event-by-event respiratory motion correction technique using TOF PET list-mode data, and investigated its performance by comparing with an external system-based correction method...

Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a rare form of chronic pancreatitis, classified into 2 subtypes - AIP type 1 and AIP type 2. We present a case of a 31-years-old female admitted to our institution with upper abdominal pain and obstructive jaundice. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatoscopy (ERCP) revealed stenosis of intrapancreatic distal bile duct. Diffuse parenchymal enlargement and typical features of AIP were shown by computed tomography (CT) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). The patient´s serum IgG4 was elevated at 3...
