Suicide is a global public health problem that causes the loss of more than 800,000 lives each year, principally among young people. In Brazil, the average mortality rate attributable to suicide is approximately 5.23 per 100,000 population. Although many guidelines have been published for the management of suicidal behavior, to date, there are no recent guidelines based on the principles of evidence-based medicine that apply to the reality of suicide in Brazil. The objective of this work is to provide key guidelines for managing patients with suicidal behavior in Brazil...

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is highly infectious, with the recent World Health Organization decree confirming a global public health emergency. The outcomes related to maternal and fetal health among pregnant women infected with the virus are still poorly understood. The world population has been waiting for answers and remains constantly alert about the pandemic's progress. It is not yet known what impact this pandemic experience will have on the population's mental health, especially pregnant women...

Diets including red meat and other animal-sourced foods may increase proteolytic fermentation and microbial-generated trimethylamine (TMA) and, subsequently, trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia. It was hypothesized that compared to usual dietary intake, a maintenance-energy high-protein diet (HPD) would increase products of proteolytic fermentation, whereas adjunctive prebiotic, probiotic, and synbiotic supplementation may mitigate these effects...

On April 12, 2020, a bioethics guide for allocating scarce hospital resources during the current Covid-19 pandemic was posted on the website of the Consejo de Salubridad General(CSG) of the Government of Mexico. The guide, entitled Guía bioética para asignación de recursos limitados de medicina crítica en situación de emergencia, was intended as a preliminary document, but the website posting did not describe it as a first step in the process. The publicity resulted in a wide array of comments and criticisms...

AIMS: The aim of this study is to establish the incidence of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) as a main reason for between-hospital transfer in children, as well as to describe the clinical presentation, prognosis and treatment, risk factors presenting with haemodynamic compromise, and to propose a specific management protocol for the transport. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted on all patients with supraventricular tachycardia transferred by the Hospital Vall d'Hebron Sistema de Emergencias Médicas Pediátricas (SEM-P) between January 2005 and June 2017...

The greater development and creation of new Pediatric Intensive Care Units in recent years requires us to review the appropriate structure of the corresponding care between the initial resuscitation of the critical pediatric patient and care by specialists in highly complex areas. The transportation process must offer the critical pediatric patient a standard of care similar to that offered in said Unit. This standard is achieved with a team trained in pediatric transport and with the capacity to provide critical care...

Objectives: to analyze the historical development of the Valencian dietary model, establish the relationship between gastronomy and nutrition and explore the role that reclaiming and adapting culinary and gastronomic traditions could play in the promotion of healthy eating. Methods: literature search and content analysis of studies on the subjects under study. Results: traditional Valencian cuisine is characterized by its variety and diversity at local and regional level; however, the extensive use of vegetables in its dishes and recipes renders it unique and was a crucial aspect of the Valencian population's successful food and nutrition transition in the 1960s...

OBJECTIVE: Guidelines adherence in emergency departments (EDs) relies partly on the availability of resources to improve sepsis care and outcomes. Our objective was to assess the management of pediatric septic shock (PSS) in Latin America's EDs and to determine the impact of treatment coordinated by a pediatric emergency specialist (PEMS) versus nonpediatric emergency specialists (NPEMS) on guidelines adherence. METHODS: Prospective, descriptive, and multicenter study using an electronic survey administered to PEMS and NPEMS who treat PSS in EDs in 14 Latin American countries...
