Superficial angiomyxoma is a distinctive cutaneous soft tissue neoplasm that is clinically variable, infrequent, and benign. However, this tumor has a high propensity for local recurrence. There is a known association of angiomyxomas with Carney complex. We report a case of superficial angiomyxoma in a 28-year-old woman who presented with an erythematous, mul-tilobulated nodule on the nipple. This tumor has a predilection for the trunk, head and neck, extremities, and genitalia. The present case, hence, is unusual, because the lesion developed on the nipple...

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon intermediate-grade soft tissue sarcoma. The tumor is found preferentially on the trunk, whereas the head and neck region are affected in only 10% to 15% of cases. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman with a 5-month history of an asymptomatic, firm, yellow nodule in the mucosa of the right cheek measuring 2.5 cm. The clinical diagnosis was lipoma and an excisional biopsy was obtained. Histopathological analysis revealed a proliferation of spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells arranged in interlacing fascicles amidst fibrous stroma...

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum is a rare cutaneous adnexal tumor that usually arises in the head and neck region. It may develop de novo or within a nevus sebaceus. Linear syringocystadenoma papilliferum is an uncommon variant of this benign tumor. We report a child with linear retroauricular distribution of syringocystadenoma papilliferum. A background nevus sebaceus was shown histologically. Total excision was curative with no recurrence. An association between the linear variant of syringocystadenoma papilliferum and nevus sebaceus has not been reported previously...

Blue nevi are benign proliferations of melaninproducingdendritic melanocytes located in thedermis. These nevi tend to occur mostly on the skin, predominantly on the head and neck, dorsal aspectsof the distal extremities, and the sacral area, butcan also occasionally appear on mucosal surfaces.Blue nevi of the nail apparatus are uncommon. Themajority originate in the nail matrix where there is ahigher density of melanocytes. Herein we report ona 47-year-old man with a rare common blue nevus ofthe nail bed, an area with low melanocyte density...

BACKGROUND: The Injury Severity Score (ISS) is the most commonly used injury scoring system in trauma research and benchmarking. An ISS>15 conventionally defines severe injury; however, no studies evaluate whether ISS performs similarly between adults and children. Our objective was to evaluate ISS and AIS to predict mortality and define optimal thresholds of severe injury in pediatric trauma. METHODS: Patients from the Pennsylvania trauma registry 2000-2013 were included...

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the second most common neoplasm of the head and neck after squamous cell carcinoma. However, it accounts for only 3.5% of all malignancies of the oral cavity. Oral lesions are often a component of disseminated disease process that may involve regional lymph nodes or may at times represent the primary extra nodal form of the disease. Although, isolated oral lymphoma in adults is extremely rare, this paper presents a patient with Burkitt lymphoma in an adult male with atypical clinical presentation primarily involving the oral soft tissue...

BACKGROUND: The modified Dunn procedure (open subcapital realignment via a surgical dislocation approach) has been shown to be a safe and effective way of treating acute, unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). There is a paucity of literature comparing the modified Dunn procedure in stable SCFE. The purpose of this study was to compare acute, unstable versus chronic, stable SCFE managed with the modified Dunn procedure. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on 44 skeletally immature patients who underwent the modified Dunn procedure for SCFE...

BACKGROUND: Derotational osteotomy of the proximal femur has proved to be effective in the treatment of residual acetabular dysplasia. However, the reason why this osteotomy is effective remains debatable. The purpose of this study is to investigate if an alteration of femoral head orientation affects acetabular growth. METHODS: A proximal femoral osteotomy was performed in 21 lambs aged 3 months: 5 varus osteotomies (110 degrees), 4 valgus osteotomies (150 degrees), and 12 derotation osteotomies...

Context: Malnutrition is highly prevalent in cancer patients and an important predictor of morbidity, mortality, treatment response and toxicity. Taste and smell changes (TSCs) are common and may contribute to malnutrition. Research has previously focused on patients receiving chemotherapy (CT) or head and neck radiotherapy (RT). However, TSCs may occur pre-treatment, with other treatment modalities, and in cancer survivors. This review evaluates objective and subjective assessment of taste and smell, discusses the prevalence of TSCs in cancer, and reviews the clinical sequelae of TSCs in cancer patients...

BACKGROUND: In definitive radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, clinically uninvolved cervical lymph nodes are irradiated with a so-called 'elective dose' in order to achieve control of clinically occult metastases. As a consequence of high-resolution diagnostic imaging, occult tumor volume has significantly decreased in the last decades. Since the elective dose is dependent on occult tumor volume, the currently used elective dose may be higher than necessary. Because bilateral irradiation of the neck contributes to dysphagia, xerostomia and hypothyroidism in a dose dependent way, dose de-escalation to these regions can open a window of opportunity to reduce toxicity and improve quality of life after treatment...

Background Lobular capillary hemangioma is a rare benign tumor, most frequently located in the head or neck region, the nasal cavity being uncommonly affected. Its etiopathogenesis is not fully established, although traumatic and hormonal factors have been implied. Case Description A 50-year-old female patient underwent an uneventful endoscopic transsphenoidal removal of a pituitary cystic macroadenoma at our institution. Nasal packing was used in postoperative hemostasis. Histopathology was compatible with a gonadotrophin-producing adenoma...

Squamous cell carcinoma of the temporal bone is a rare and destructive malignancy and represents both diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The complex regional anatomy of the temporal bone requires equally intricate surgical techniques to adequately resect the tumour mass during surgical excision. Adjuvant radiotherapy is offered to patients with advanced disease and has been showed to confer a survival benefit in carefully selected patients. One feared complication of radiotherapy is osteoradionecrosis and is a major obstacle faced in the treatment of head and neck cancers...

Background. Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign tumor affecting large joints and prompts excision to prevent local destruction of the joint. The purpose of this case report is to describe two differing surgical approaches for management of PVNS of the hip in patients requiring concomitant treatment for additional hip pathology. Methods. This report discusses the presentation, clinical and radiographic findings, and operative management of two contrasting cases of PVNS of the hip. Case 1 describes a 31-year-old female with localized PVNS in addition to a labral tear treated with arthroscopic labral repair followed by tumor excision via a mini-open incision...

Warty dyskeratoma is an uncommon entity characterized by a solitary keratotic papule or nodule usually located in the head and neck of young adults. The histopathology shows a pattern of acantholytic dyskeratosis. We report a 32-year-old man who presented pain, serous exudation, a distal onycholysis with subungual hyperkeratosis, and roundish erythronychia in the nail plate of his left first toe 2 years ago. A histopathologic diagnosis of subungual warty dyskeratoma was made. When dealing with focal acantholytic dyskeratosis several differential diagnoses should be considered including Darier's disease, transient focal acantholytic dyskeratosis or Grover disease, and Hailey-Hailey disease...

Up to 10% of patients with visceral malignancies develop skin metastases during their clinical course and these metastases constitute about 2% of all skin cancers. Skin metastasis may be the first sign of a clinically silent visceral cancer or represent recurrence of an internal malignancy. In both situations, they are associated with poor prognosis, which can partly be attributed to underdiagnosis. In this paper, a case of relapsing gastric adenocarcinoma, which manifested itself as asymptomatic cutaneous papules and nodules on a patient's head and neck, is reported and histopathological approach to the cutaneous lesions containing signet-ring cell is briefly reviewed...

Objective: This work aimed to evaluate the cortical silent period (cSP) of the laryngeal motor cortex (LMC) using the bilateral thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Methods: In 11 healthy participants, fine-wire electromyography (EMG) was used to record bilateral TA muscle responses to single pulse TMS delivered to the LMC in both hemispheres. Peripheral responses to stimulation over the mastoid, where the vagus nerve exits the skull, were collected to verify the central origin of the cortical stimulation responses by comparing the latencies...
