Protein arginine methyltransferase-5 (PRMT5) plays an important role in cancer progression by repressing the expression of key tumor suppressor genes via the methylation of transcriptional factors and chromatin-associated proteins. However, very little is known about the expression and biological role of PRMT5 in head and neck cancer. In this study, we examined expression profile of PRMT5 at subcellular levels in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and assessed its correlation with disease progression and patient outcome...

We establish reference values of tear production by the phenol red thread test (PRTT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) by rebound tonometry in helmeted guinea fowl ( Numida meleagris ). Aqueous tear production and IOP were measured in 44 (22 males, 22 females) clinically normal captive helmeted guinea fowl. Birds were gently physically restrained in the sitting position without any pressure to the head or neck. In each bird, aqueous tear production was measured by placing phenol red threads in the superior conjunctival fornix, and IOP was measured by using a Tonovet rebound tonometer...

Intraoperative detection of residual malignant cells at tumor margins following excision of primary tumors could help improving surgery and thus patients' outcome. The feasibility of the tumor antigens epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) and epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) for antibody-dependent confocal laser scanning endomicroscopy (CLE)-mediated visualization of malignant cells was addressed. Both tumor antigens are highly and frequently expressed in the majority of carcinomas, including head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC), and represent prognostic and therapeutic tumor target molecules...

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of moderate to severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is controversial. Over the last years, 3 institutions in Argentina adopted the modified Dunn procedure for capital realignment in selected cases of SCFE. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome and the rate of complications of patients who had undergone surgical hip dislocation and capital realignment. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients who received the modified Dunn procedure from January 2009 to 2013 was performed...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Survival equipoise is recognized between the contemporary surgical and oncological approaches to oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma treatment. Primary transoral surgery (TOS) options have emerged that utilize either laser or robotic techniques. Our review presents an overview of the evidence available for swallowing outcomes following TOS approaches and compares these with outcomes following primary oncological management. RECENT FINDINGS: Meta-analysis of swallow outcomes following TOS or (chemo)radiotherapy is not possible given the heterogeneity of the available data...

Ionizing radiation is one of the most common cancer treatments; however, the treatment leads to a wide range of debilitating side effects. In patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), the surrounding normal salivary gland is extremely sensitive to therapeutic radiation, and damage to this tissue results in various oral complications and decreased quality of life (QOL). In the current study, mice treated with targeted head and neck radiation showed a significant increase in double-stranded breaks (DSB) in the DNA of parotid salivary gland cells immediately after treatment, and this remained elevated 3 h posttreatment...

Penicillium marneffei is a rare deep tissue fungal infection causing an endemic in Southeast Asia. This infection causes penicilliosis disease and is more common in patients who are immunocompromised. To date, no cases of P. marneffei infection relapse following treatment have been reported. A 36-year-old patient attended our hospital as a result of intermittent fever, cough, shortness of breath and multiple soft lesions located on the face, arms, neck and trunk. The medical radiological examination of the lung revealed multiple patchy exudative shadows, thick-walled hollow inner part of the visible lesions, bilateral pleural and pericardial effusion...

Human papillomavirus (HPV), in addition to smoking and alcohol, is a cause of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), particularly of the tonsils and base of the tongue (TSCC and BOTSCC, respectively). Moreover, HPV-positive TSCC and BOTSCC are associated with a better outcome compared with their HPV-negative counterparts (80 vs. 40% 3-year disease-free survival rate, respectively) and their incidence has increased in several countries. Recently, accumulating evidence of HPV in a considerable proportion of cancers of unknown primary (CUP) in the head and neck region and in a small proportion of hypopharyngeal SCCs has been reported...

Transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) ligands, including TGFβ1, are multifunctional cytokines known as key regulators of cell growth, differentiation and inflammation. Dysregulated TGFβ signaling is common in numerous solid tumors, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Previously, TGFβ ligands were also reported to be associated with an enhancement of stemness in glioma stem-like cells. However, their role in HNSCC cancer stem cells (CSCs) has not been explored. The present study demonstrated that TGFβ1 enriches the properties of HNSCC CSCs...

Although squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas of the esophagus differ histologically, they are often lumped together in clinical trials. Genomic analysis shows that the two cancers are molecularly distinct. Esophageal adenocarcinomas are more similar to stomach adenocarcinomas, whereas esophageal squamous cell carcinomas are closer to head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Paraneoplastic neurological disorders are uncommon presentations of head and neck cancers. We present a case of a 68-year-old male patient who presented with dizziness, nausea and memory problems. MRI of his brain showed bilateral cerebellar leptomeningeal enhancing signal abnormality with cervical lymphadenopathy. CT imaging of his neck raised the suspicion of a tonsillar primary, which was later confirmed on biopsy. His poorly differentiated HPV positive squamous cell carcinoma was treated with chemoradiotherapy...
