The clinical term 'multiorgan failure' lends itself, modified to 'multiorganelle failure', to the cascading events in cellular systems leading to hepatocyte injury, cell death, inflammation and fibrosis and ultimately to cirrhosis in NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis). NASH is one of the most common forms of liver disease and constitutes the severe form of NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). The key features that distinguish potentially progressive NASH from relatively stable non-NASH fatty liver (NNFL, often referred to as simple steatosis) are cellular ballooning, inflammation and fibrosis...

Effective treatments for malignant neuroendocrine tumors are under development. While iodine-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine (¹³¹I-MIBG) radiotherapy has been used in the treatment of malignant neuroendocrine tumors, there are few studies evaluating its therapeutic effects and safety in a multicenter cohort. In the current study, we sought to evaluate the effects and safety of ¹³¹I-MIBG therapy for conditions including malignant pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma within a multicenter cohort. Forty-eight malignant neuroendocrine tumors (37 pheochromocytoma and 11 paraganglioma) from four centers underwent clinical ¹³¹I-MIBG radiotherapy...

Nosocomial infections increase health care costs significantly and they are a real threat for all hospitalised patients as well. Surgical procedures affect imunological integrity in patients and increase risk of contamination and subsequent incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs). Antibiotic profylaxis according to recent trials has been shown to be effective in reducing the risks of postoperative infectious complications particularly in women undergoing cesarean section, termination of pregnancy in I...

Being the leading cause of blindness in modern world Age Related Macular Degeneration has beneficiated in the last decade of important progress in diagnosis, classification and the discovery of diverse factors who contribute to the etiology of this disease. Treatments have arised who can postpone the irreversible evolution of the disease and thus preserve vision. Recent findings have identified predisposing genetic factors and also inflamatory and imunological parameters that can be modified trough a good and adequate prevention and therapy This articole reviews new aspects of patology of Age Related Macular Degeneration like the role of complement in maintaining inflamation and the role of oxidative stress on different structures of the retina...

High-output chylous leak beyond 5 to 7 days of conservative medical treatment should be treated promptly to avoid the risk for nutritional and imunologic depletion. Given the effectiveness and low morbidity of this minimally invasive treatment, this is a reasonable first option before surgical repair of thoracic duct leak not responsive to conservative medical treatment.

Healthcare personnel is being highly exposed to the professional risk of Hephatitis B virus infection by accidental professional injuries, where direct contact with patients blood occurs. Number of researches indicate significance and role of accidental injuries, especially over injection needles, which is leading cause for professional HBV infections occurence. HBsAg has capability to provoke imune system if applied to a man, to HBs anti-bodies production achieving thus protection from Hephatitis B Virus. Recombinant vaccine against viruse Hephatitis B achieves high imunology protection...

Atherosclerosis is guided by chronicle inflammation process. In the last decades of the 20th century, studies considering infection another possible risk factor of atherosclerosis development were written. Helicobacter pylori, Porphyromas gingivalis, some viruses but most frequently Chlamydia pneumonie are infection agens mentioned in these studies. Some of them emphasize also combined infections caused by more pathogenic factors having influence on vascular inflammation. Serological, epidemiological, histological and imunological studies show the pathogenic influence of acute or chronic infections...

Heat shock proteins have been the focus of many experimental studies during the last few years in order to understand their biology and their imunologic features. We conducted pre-clinical experiments showing that gp96 purified from human melanoma lines can represent melanoma antigens and stimulate T cells known to recognize such antigens. Clinical studies of vaccination were then initiated by our group by using heat-shock protein gp96 purified from autologous tumor tissues in patients with melanoma and colorectal carcinoma...

Indifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharyngs is clinicaly-histological-imunologic entity which is often diagnosed in our country. There are three clinical types, but nodal cervical type of disease is the most interesting type for surgeons while the combined type is more interesting for otolaiyngologist. Among seventy-seven patients diagnosed with undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharyngs with nodal cervical type of disease, on the Institute of Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinical Centre of Serbia during the period between 1993-1997 there were N0-21%, N1-49%, N2-18% i N3-12%, no mater of the T category...

The cerebrovascular stroke is serious disease with the high mortality and resulting in invalidity. The result of its treatment is not yet encouraging. The stress situation which is characteristic for the acute stage of disease leads to catabolic status. This condition can be worsen if nutritional parameters are not properly monitored and the nutrition is not sufficient. We examined 30 patients admitted to our medical ward with the diagnosis of ischemic cerebrovascular stroke. We have not applied any nutritional intervention...

We studied the serological reaction between various antigenic components from Cysticercus cellulosae and IgG antibodies in sera of cysticercosis, sparganosis, hydatidosis patients and normal humans by ELISA and EITB. In serological tests by ELISA, we recognized cross reaction of Cysticercus antigenic components with IgG antibodies in heterologous sera such as sparganosis and hydatidosis patients or normal humans. The crude antigenic components of Cysticercus showed lower ELISA sensitivity in homologous sera from cysticercosis patients than heterologous sera from hydatidosis patients...

This is a case report of a 60 years old female patient with bronchial asthma, peripherial pulmonary infiltrations, blood eosinophilia, xerophtalmia, tachycardia, chronic rhinosinustis, polyneuropathia and negative imunological tests: CIC (PEG), CRYO, ANA (IIF), RF (aglutination) and ANCA (IFF: pANCA and cANCA; ELISA: proteinase 3, lactoferrin, myeloperoxidase...

Mediastinal B-cell lymphoma is a locally highly aggressive tumor with a rather unique pattern of clinical, morphologic, imunologic, and genetic features distinct from other diffuse large B-cell lymphomas. Characterization of this disease has been hampered by the relatively low incidence of this lymphoma type. Although recent studies on larger numbers of cases have allowed new insights into biology and clinics of this lymphoma type, the histogenesis of mediastinal B-cell lymphoma is not yet fully understood...

Pasteurellaceae species particularly of porcine origin which are closely related to Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae were analyzed for the presence of analogues to the major A. pleuropneumoniae RTX toxin genes, apxICABD, apxIICA and apxIIICABD and for their expression. Actinobacillus suis contains both apxICABD(var.suis) and apxIICA(var. suis) operons and was shown to produce ApxI and ApxII toxin. Actinobacillus rossii contained the operons apxIICA(var.rossii) and apxIIICABD(var.rossii). However, only the toxin ApxII and not ApxIII could be detected in cultures of A...

In patients with the malignant tumor of bone (17 osteosarcomas, 8 Ewing tumors) longterm observations were made, and namely at the beginning of the disease, after the surgical removal of the tumor, during chemotherapy and in the terminal phase of the disease. The observations concentrated on the following selected immunology parameters: active lymphocytes T, lymphocytes T, lymphocytes B, large granular lymphocytes, IgG, IgA, IgM and circulating immune complexes. In non-treated patients prior to diagnosing the disease, reduction of active lymphocytes T was found out while the total lymphocytes T remained unchanged...
