OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to examine the antimicrobial potential of eight selected, commercially available wound dressings containing different antimicrobial agents: silver, chlorhexidine acetate, povidone-iodine, and manuka honey. METHOD: The materials were tested against four reference strains of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (PCM 2051), Staphylococcus epidermidis (PCM 2118), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), and Escherichia coli (K12), using the disc diffusion-like method and a time-killing assay...

INTRODUCTION: Silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-containing dressings are used worldwide for the treatment of wounds; however, many studies have indicated that AgNPs are toxic to humans and cause cell death, primarily via apoptosis. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the investigators compare the apoptotic effects of various AgNP dressing materials, with the hypothesis that nanosilver would be less toxic than ionic silver. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the in vivo experiments, Sprague-Dawley (SD) and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats were treated with 5 dressing materials: Aquacel Ag (product A, silver ion; ConvaTec, Berkshire, UK), Acticoat (product B, AgNP; Smith & Nephew, Fort Worth, TX), Medifoam Silver (product C, silver ion; Genewel Science Co Ltd, Seongnam, South Korea), PolyMem Silver (product D, AgNP; Ferris Mfg Corp, Fort Worth, TX), and Vaseline-impregnated dressing gauze (control; Unilever, London, UK)...

RATIONALE: Burns is a common type of traumatic injury in childhood. Nowadays, several wound dressings are available to treat the second-degree hand burns conservatively. PATIENT CONCERNS, DIAGNOSES: At the authors' institute, 37 children were treated conservatively with a special dressing at first intervention containing Aquacel Ag foam and Zn-hyaluronic gel to determine their effectiveness on partial thickness hand burns. INTERVENTIONS: The dressing was checked on the second day, and removed on the sixth or seventh day (unless it had spontaneously separated)...

Burns are among the most common causes of injury in children. Several wound dressings are available to conservatively treat second-degree burns. Seventy-three children were treated with Aquacel Ag foam and Zn-hyaluronon gel to determine their effectiveness on partial thickness burns. We applied silver nitrate solution on 25% of patients for 24 hrs, then checked burn depth. If the burn was superficial second degree, we applied the dressing under study. All dressings were removed 6-7 days later. In the remaining children we used Aquacel Ag foam dressing with Zn-hyaluronon gel at first intervention...

This study investigated whether there are differences in the ability of wound dressings to modulate certain factors known to affect wound healing. A selection of antimicrobial dressings (AQUACEL® Ag Extra™ , AQUACEL® Ag+ Extra™ , IODOFLEX™ , ACTICOAT™ 7 and PROMOGRAN PRISMA™ matrix) were tested for their effect on both bacterial bioburden and human dermal fibroblasts. Some dressings underwent further evaluation for activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms using a colony-drip flow reactor model...

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of different treatment strategies for children with partial-thickness scalds at two burn centers. At the first burn center, these burns were treated with a hydrofiber dressing (Aquacel® , Convatec, Inc.® , Princeton, NJ, USA) or silver sulfadiazine (SSD, Flammazine® , Sinclair IS Pharma, London, UK Pharmaceuticals), while at the second burn center, cerium nitrate-silver sulfadiazine (CN-SSD, Flammacerium® , Sinclair IS Pharma, London, UK Pharmaceuticals) was used...

BACKGROUND: Commercial silver-impregnated occlusive dressings (such as AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL Cover Dressing) have been touted as antimicrobial dressings to be used following total joint arthroplasty. Given the increased cost of an AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL Cover Dressing over a standard dressing for total joint arthroplasty, the objective of this study was to determine whether AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL Cover Dressing is effective in reducing the rates of acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) compared to standard sterile dressing...

INTRODUCTION: Burn injury is one of the most common reasons for admission in paediatric population. There is currently no international consensus on the best wound dressing material. Aquacel Ag, a new silver containing hydrofiber dressing material has been reported to produce good clinical results. Yet, only a limited number of studies exist in the paediatric population. This study aims to review our experience of burn management over the past 5 years and to evaluate the effectiveness of Aquacel Ag in the management of partial thickness burns...

The infection in burn wounds covered by biologic dressings leads to wound deepening and chronic wounds. The introduction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into biologic dressings is a beneficial method to prevent wound infection and simultaneously promote wound healing. In this study, an AgNP-loaded silk fibroin (SF)/carboxymethylchitosan (CMC) composite sponge was fabricated. AgNPs with a mean diameter of 4.9 nm was synthesized in SF solution in situ. While CMC was incorporated and chemically crosslinked, SF was insolubilized by ethanol annealing...

Three case reports on conservative treatment of posttraumatic open conquassant wounds in children are presented. In 2 cases, the wounds opened after rejection of a previously applied skin graft, whereas in the third case, the wound was consequential to toe amputation and treated conservatively. Based on the authors' long-standing favorable experience with this type of dressing in healing of deep burns in children, treatment was continued with the use of a hydrofiber supportive silver-containing dressing (AQUACEL Ag, ConvaTec, Bridgewater, NJ)...

Silver-impregnated dressings are increasingly preferred over silver sulfadiazine cream in the management of pediatric burns. An ideal burns dressing would provide a moist, sterile environment, discourage infection, and not require painful dressing changes. Various types of wound dressings have been designed for different purposes and functions. Controlling bacterial burden in a wound during the early phase is important for successful wound repair. Once bacterial burden is under control, the active promotion of wound healing is another important factor for efficient wound healing. Broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents, such as silver, are increasingly being formulated into medicated wound dressings in order to control colonization of wounds by opportunistic pathogens. Medicated wound dressings have been shown in-vitro to be effective against planktonic cultures, but in-vivo bacteria are likely to be present in biofilms, which makes their control and eradication more challenging. Recently, a functional wound dressing (AQUACEL(®) Ag+ Extra™ (AAg + E)) has been developed that in addition to silver contains two agents (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and benzethonium chloride (BC)) designed to disrupt biofilms...
