There has been growing interest in reported cases of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) flare-up following administration of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine. Our patient is a previously healthy 17-year-old girl who presented with a 10-year history of microscopic hematuria. Because there were no abnormal findings in blood examination or ultrasonography, we followed her up twice per year as asymptomatic hematuria. Although she never developed gross hematuria when she had upper respiratory infections or received an influenza vaccine, she presented with gross hematuria and proteinuria within a few days after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine...

BACKGROUND: Approximately 5% to 10% of patients with Lynch syndrome develop urothelial carcinoma. Current screening recommendations vary and are based on expert opinion. Practices need to be evaluated for clinical effectiveness. Our program utilizes urinalysis as a screening test, followed by additional evaluation of microscopic hematuria. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the clinical utility of a urinalysis-based screening approach for urothelial cancers in patients with Lynch syndrome...

Background: The aim of this study was to report the clinical features and mutations in a patient with autosomal-inherited Alport syndrome (AS). Methods: We examined the clinical data, mutation analysis results, and family tree of a patient with autosomal-inherited AS, who had nephrotic syndrome as her first manifestation. Results: The proband was a girl of 11 months who presented with nephritic and nephrotic syndromes including gross hematuria but had a normal renal function. Her treatment course was complicated by steroid resistance and a poor response to cyclosporine A and cyclophosphamide pulse therapy...

BACKGROUND: MB66 film is a multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) product with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against HIV-1 (VRC01-N) and HSV-1 and 2 (HSV8-N). The mAbs were produced by transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana (N). We conducted a Phase I clinical trial to assess the safety, pharmacokinetics (PK), and ex vivo efficacy of single and repeated doses of MB66 when used intravaginally. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The clinical trial enrolled healthy reproductive-aged, sexually abstinent women...

Biallelic pathogenic variants in the laminin β2 (LAMB2) gene, which encodes laminin β2, are associated with Pierson syndrome characterized by a congenital nephrotic syndrome that rapidly progresses to end-stage renal disease, distinct ocular maldevelopment with bilateral microcoria, and neurodevelopmental deficits. However, the phenotypic spectrum of LAMB2-associated disorder is broader than expected, and cases with milder phenotypes such as isolated congenital or infantile nephrotic syndrome have also been reported...

BACKGROUND: Nutcracker syndrome is caused by a rare anatomic variant where the left renal vein is trapped between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. Posterior nutcracker syndrome is an even rarer entity, characterized by the retro-aortic positioning of the renal vein, causing compression between the aorta and spinal vertebrae. Symptoms include microscopic or frank hematuria, flank pain, varicocele, pelvic congestion syndrome, and abdominal pain. A search of the literature did not reveal prior cases of nutcracker syndrome that became symptomatic and diagnosed secondary to the unique stressors of high gravitational force (G force) in the aviation environment...

PURPOSE: The American Urological Association guideline for asymptomatic microhematuria recommends in patients with a negative initial workup, repeat workup should be considered for those with persistent/recurrent microhematuria. However, there is little data on the yield of repeat evaluation. Our hypothesis was that repeat workup yields a low detection rate of urologic malignancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients at our institution who underwent microhematuria workup with cystoscopy and upper tract imaging from May 2010 to June 2016...

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to determine whether patients with asymptomatic microscopic hematuria undergoing CT urography (CTU) meet the American Urological Association criteria for radiologic evaluation and to determine the yield of CTU for upper tract malignancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of consecutive CTU examinations performed for asymptomatic microscopic hematuria in adult patients. Patients with clinical evidence suggestive of a benign cause of hematuria (stone, urinary tract infection, trauma) or prior urologic malignancy were excluded...

Renal papillary necrosis is an infrequent cause of hematuria characterized by ischemic necrosis of the renal medulla, especially the papilla. Its most common cause is analgesic abuse. Despite being oligo-symptomatic, in many cases its presence is associated with serious functional sequelae. Imaging, especially computed tomography, is essential to make the diagnosis. We report a 63-year-old female studied for an asymptomatic microscopic hematuria whose tomographic study showed a bilateral renal papillary necrosis...

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a rather uncommon complication of TNF-alpha inhibition with a range of findings such as asymptomatic microscopic/macroscopic hematuria or different degrees of proteinuria and could progress to end-stage renal disease. We are reporting three patients with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which developed IgAN while receiving TNF-alpha inhibitors. All off our three patients had RA, which lasted 2-4 years, and none of them had a prior history of chronic kidney disease. Two patients were treated with adalimumab while one patient was treated with golimumab...

RATIONALE: Renal hemosiderosis is a disease in which hemosiderin deposits in the renal cortex as a form of iron overload. However, cases of renal hemosiderosis due to intravascular hemolysis following mitral valve repair have been rarely reported. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) of the kidney is rare. To the best of our knowledge, the current report is the first case of a giant extraskeletal MC that arose primarily from the right kidney and mimicked renal cell carcinoma at the locally advanced stage (cT3bN0) with vena cava thrombus and multiple pulmonary arterial tumor emboli. Additionally, the literature on renal EMC is reviewed and the possibilities of oncogenic heterogeneity are discussed. A 64-year-old woman was admitted to Yamagata University Hospital for sudden onset of asymptomatic gross hematuria...

Introduction: Urinalysis (UA) is performed routinely as a diagnostic screening test for trauma patients in most centers. This study aimed to examine the relationship between patients' clinical signs and symptoms with UA findings. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on multiple trauma patients between 18 to 65 years old, who were referred to the Emergency Department. UA was performed for all patients and its association with clinical signs and symptoms (pain, tenderness, abrasion, ecchymosis, hematoma, etc...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the problem of asymptomatic microscopic hematuria (AMH) in women and the most recent publications on the topic. RECENT FINDINGS: Urologic malignancy is rarely associated with AMH in low-risk women. Screening for urologic malignancy includes upper urinary tract imaging and cystoscopy. Renal ultrasound is a cost-effective first-line imaging modality in patients with AMH. Multiphasic computed tomography (CT) urography increases healthcare costs, the risk of secondary malignancy due to cumulative radiation exposure, and the discovery of incidental benign findings resulting in additional work-up...
