Extensive morphological convergence or divergence, a common occurrence in fungi, tends to obscure recognition of phylogenetic relationships among Pezizales, widespread filamentous Ascomycetes with either enclosed underground (hypogeous) or exposed (epigeous) fruit bodies, that often establish mutualistic interactions with arboreous plants.
