OBJECTIVES: We sought to study whether the level of completeness of revascularization as measured by the SYNTAX revascularization index (SRI) independently predicts adverse ischemic events after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with second-generation drug-eluting stents (DES). BACKGROUND: The SRI quantifies the proportion of revascularized myocardium. It has been shown to independently predict adverse ischemic events after PCI with first-generation DES. METHODS: Among 1,900 patients enrolled in a registry to evaluate safety and effectiveness of everolimus drug-eluting stent (SEEDS) for coronary revascularization, the SRI was calculated and available for 1,851 patients...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the leading cause of cancer death and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the commonest causes in Asians countries. India has the second largest pool after China for hepatitis B infected subjects. HBV clearance is T cell dependent and one of the reason for T cells hypo responsiveness is due to mass production of Tregs through activation of Notch signaling, which suppressCD4/CD8 T cells. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are important to maintain cellular homeostasis; however during viral infection increase of Tregs is inversely proportional to HBV DNA titers...

Quantitative assessment of gait in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) is an important step in addressing motor symptoms and improving clinical management. Based on the assessment of only 5 meters of gait with a single body-fixed-sensor placed on the lower back, this study presents a method for the identification of step-by-step kinematic parameters in 14 healthy controls and in 28 patients at early-to-moderate stages of idiopathic PD. Differences between groups in step-by-step kinematic parameters were evaluated to understand gait impairments in the PD group...

Stevioside and rebaudioside A are the main diterpene glycosides present in the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant, which is used in the production of foods and low-calorie beverages. The difficulties associated with their extraction and purification are currently a problem for the food processing industries. The objective of this study was to develop an effective and economically viable method to obtain a high-quality product while trying to overcome the disadvantages derived from the conventional transformation processes...

BACKGROUND: The Affordable Care Act of 2010 advanced the economic model of bundled payments for total joint arthroplasty (TJA), in which hospitals will be financially responsible for readmissions, typically at 90 days after surgery. However, little is known about the financial burden of readmissions and what patient, clinical, and hospital factors drive readmission costs. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the incidence, payer mix, and demographics of THA and TKA readmissions in the United States? (2) What patient, clinical, and hospital factors are associated with the cost of 30- and 90-day readmissions after primary THA and TKA? (3) Are there any differences in the economic burden of THA and TKA readmissions between payers? (4) What types of THA and TKA readmissions are most costly to the US hospital system? METHODS: The recently developed Nationwide Readmissions Database from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (2006 hospitals from 21 states) was used to identify 719,394 primary TJAs and 62,493 90-day readmissions in the first 9 months of 2013 based on International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification codes...

Genotype calling plays important roles in population-genomic studies, which have been greatly accelerated by sequencing technologies. To take full advantage of the resultant information, we have developed maximum-likelihood (ML) methods for calling genotypes from high-throughput sequencing data. As the statistical uncertainties associated with sequencing data depend on depths of coverage, we have developed two types of genotype callers. One approach is appropriate for low-coverage sequencing data, and incorporates population-level information on genotype frequencies and error rates pre-estimated by an ML method...

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical wear and corrosion at the head-stem junction of total hip arthroplasties (THAs) (trunnionosis) have been implicated in their early revision, most commonly in metal-on-metal (MOM) hips. We can isolate the role of the head-stem junction as the predominant source of metal release by investigating non-MOM hips; this can help to identify clinically significant volumes of material loss and corrosion from these surfaces. METHODS: In this study we examined a series of 94 retrieved metal-on-polyethylene (MOP) hips for evidence of corrosion and material loss at the taper junction using a well published visual grading method and an established roundness-measuring machine protocol...

INTRODUCTION: Individuals of African descent (AFD) are more susceptible to non-freezing cold injury (NFCI) compared with Caucasian individuals (CAU). Vasodilatation to acetylcholine (ACh) is lower in AFD compared with CAU in the non-glabrous foot and finger skin sites; the reason for this is unknown. Prostanoids are responsible, in part, for the vasodilator response to ACh, however it is not known whether the contribution differs between ethnicities. METHODS: 12 CAU and 12 AFD males received iontophoresis of ACh (1 w/v%) on non-glabrous foot and finger skin sites following placebo and then aspirin (600mg, single blinded)...

BACKGROUND: Wear particles liberated from the surface of prostheses are considered to be main reason for osteoclast bone resorption and that extensive osteoclastogenesis leads to peri-implant osteolysis and subsequent prosthetic loosening. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of rifampin on osteoclastogenesis and titanium (Ti) particle-induced osteolysis. METHODS: The Ti particle-induced osteolysis mouse calvarial model and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) were used...

This brief report is a response to the article by Peter Bancel entitled "Searching for Global Consciousness: A Seventeen Year Exploration" in which he compares a goal orientation (GO) model with a field-like model he refers to as global consciousness (GC). He first attempts to exclude the latter, and then presents selected tests that compare the models. While the article appears to provide support for Bancel׳s conclusion that GC cannot explain the data and must be supplanted by GO, there are good reasons to believe this conclusion is premature at best...

OBJECTIVES: To (1) identify sex-related differences in risk factors and revascularization strategies for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), (2) assess whether these differences influenced early and late survival, and (3) determine whether clinical effectiveness of the same revascularization strategy was influenced by sex. METHODS: From January 1972 to January 2011, 57,943 adults-11,009 (19%) women-underwent primary isolated CABG. Separate models for long-term mortality were developed for men and women, followed by assessing sex-related differences in strength of risk factors (interaction terms)...

An appropriate solvent environment is essential for the implementation of biological functions of proteins. Interactions between protein residues and solvent molecules are of great importance for proteins to maintain their active structure and catalyze biochemical reactions. In this study, we investigated such interactions and studied the structural transitions of proteins during their dissolution process. Our previously developed technique, namely solvent assisted electric field induced desorption/ionization, was used for the dissolution and immediate ionization of proteins...

Studies suggest that musical training enhances spatial-temporal reasoning and leads to greater learning of mathematical concepts. The aim of this prospective study was to verify the efficacy of a Non-Instrumental Musical Training (NIMT) on the Numerical Cognition systems in children with low achievement in math. For this purpose, we examined, with a cluster analysis, whether children with low scores on Numerical Cognition would be grouped in the same cluster at pre and post-NIMT. Participants were primary school children divided into two groups according to their scores on an Arithmetic test...
