PURPOSE:  Lesion-related evaluation of the diagnostic performance of an individual artificial intelligence (AI) system to assess mamographically detected and histologically proven calcifications. MATERIALS AND METHODS:  This retrospective study included 634 women of one screening unit (July 2012 - June 2018) who completed the invasive assessment of calcifications. For each leasion, the AI-system calculated a score between 0 and 98. Lesions scored > 0 were classified as AI-positive...

The role of MRI in the workup of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients remains controversial. Breast MRI detects additional disease, but this has not translated into improved outcomes. In light of a dramatic rise in MRI use, we investigated patterns of MRI ordering for newly diagnosed breast cancer. All newly diagnosed breast cancer cases presenting for surgical management to a specialized breast center from 2011 to 2013 were reviewed. Patients who had an MRI ordered by their operating surgeon were compared with those who had an MRI completed previously...

The national breast cancer screening program has been introduced in Croatia in the second half of 2006 with mammography as the screening method. We investigated the impact of screening mammography on the basic pathohistological characteristics of breast cancers retrieved from the database of large community hospital. The data were collected in the period following the initiation of national mamographic screening program (2007-2011), and compared with the data collected in the period before the program introduction (2002-2006) to explore the possible changing trends...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic value of vacuum-assisted biopsy (VB) with digital stereotactic Mammotome on dubious mammary lesions clinically and sonographically negative as an alternative to surgical biopsy diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From November 1999 to November 2000, 122 biopsies were performed using a vacuum suction aspiration device with digital stereotactic-guided Mammotome (Fischer prone table) on 116 patients between the age of 34 and 74 years (median 51 yrs)...

The purpose of this study is to evaluate cytologically two cases of mammary fibromatosis (MF). Prior to FNAC, clinical and mammographic suspicion of carcinoma and fibroadenoma were present. In both cases cytology disclosed the presence of numerous spindle cells admixed with epithelial cells. In the first case, carcinoma was excluded and the diagnosis of "spindle-cell proliferative lesion" was established. The second case was erroneously diagnosed as "cellular fibroadenoma" due to the presence of monolayered ductal epithelial groups and stromal tissue...

The excision of mammographically suspect lesions of the breast is a problem, when these are non-palpable. Our experiences with intraoperative specimen radiography in 128 cases show that this method is very useful and appropriate to prove biopsy, especially if calcifications are present.
