OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of TCR BV CDR3 family in fulminant hepatitis B (FHB) patients. METHODS: Totally 28 patients with fulminant hepatitis B (FHB) (FHB group), who were treated in our hospital from Oct. 2010. to Mar. 2012, and 20 healthy controls( HC group) were included in the study. PBMCs were isolated from anticogulated blood, and RT-PCR was used to detect the levels of TCR BV CDR3 family in the 2 groups. RESULTS: The levels of DeltaCt1, DeltaCt12 and DeltaCt20 in FHB group were higher than those in HC group (P < 0...

Among the different subtypes of ischaemic strokes, almost 20 % are of cardiac origin. Different are the causes of cardioembolic stroke, but the most common is the atrial fibrillation, a supraventricular arrhythmia. Appropriate use of antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulants after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or ischaemic stroke depends on whether the underlying cause is cardioembolic or of presumed arterial origin. Adequate antiplatelet therapy is recommended for secondary prevention after cerebral ischaemia of presumed arterial origin, whether for patients with TIA and ischaemic stroke of cardiac origin, mainly due to atrial fibrillation...

INTRODUCTION: Livedoid vasculopathy is characterized by early, focal painful purpuric lesions of the lower skin extremities without histologic finding of small vessel vasculitis. EXEGESIS: A 38-year-old man was seen in our unit for painful purpuric lesions of both feet localized on toes and external sides. Skin biopsy showed dermic vessel thrombosis and endothelial cell proliferation. Lupus anticogulant antibody was positive in association with a heterozygous factor V (Leiden) gene mutation (G1691A)...

In a patient on oral anticogulation with sudden onset of loin pain, the possibility of spontaneous bleeding in the retroperitoneum must be considered in the differential diagnosis of renal colic. This rare pathology can be life-threatening, and rapid diagnosis with ultrasound and computerized tomography of the abdomen must be made. If the patient is hemodynamically stable, a conservative approach is justified. Otherwise, emergency nephrectomy may be needed. As patients become older and indications for anticoagulant therapy become more common, we will probably have to face more of these rare bleeding complications in the future...

BACKGROUND: Due to the shortage of donor organs there is a long waiting time for heart transplantation. As a consequence, a high mortality rate on the waiting list diminishes the potential benefit of the procedure. Tailored medical therapy optimized according to the individual patients demands was introduced to select responding HTx candidates for continued management without transplantation. The development of modes of death over time (heart failure, sudden arrhythmic) in this population is unknown...

Snake venoms contain a rich variety of factors affecting the haemostatic mechanism which can be broadly classified as possessing coagulatant, anticoagulant and haemorrhagic activity. Coagulant enzymes include activators of blood coagulation factors II (prothrombin), V and X; anticoagulants include protein C activators, inhibitors of prothrombin complex formation and fibrinogenases which can be further classified according to their specificity for the alpha-, beta- and gamma-chains of fibrinogen. Intermediate between true coagulants and true anticoagulants are the thrombin-like enzymes which bring about clotting in vitro but defibrination (anticoagulation) in vivo...

Expanded indications for caval interruption and earlier diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis have resulted in increased use of transvenous caval interruption devices and have intensified the search for the ideal caval filter. The Vena Tech vena cava filter is a percutaneous, transvenous caval interruption device which was recently introduced in the United States. We reviewed our experience with this filter. During the period of September 1989 to July 1990, 41 patients underwent placement of the Vena Tech filter...

The effect of thrombospondin, a major glycoprotein in the platelet alpha-granule, on the erythrocyte aggregation rate was investigated. Venous blood was sampled from 8 healthy male volunteers and anticogulated with 1.1 mg/ml EDTA(K2). The erythrocyte aggregation rate of each blood sample was measured with a whole-blood erythrocyte aggregometer before and after incubation with murine monoclonal antibody against human platelet thrombospondin. After 15 min incubation, the erythrocyte aggregation rate exhibited a significant decrease to 0...

To study possible changes in the clinical use of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters caused by the introduction of percutaneous delivery systems, we reviewed all patients who underwent placement of IVC filters at our institution from 1988 to 1991. Eighty-four patients (52 men and 32 women) ranging in age from 18 to 90 years (mean 67 years) were identified. Filters were required because of contraindications to anticogulation in 64% anticoagulation failure in 25%, and preoperative prophylaxis in 11% of patients...

A follow up study on 251 in situ bypass procedures on the lower extremities is done 3 years postoperatively. Patency of the bypass is correlated to smoking habits, anticoagulant therapy, age at operation and the diameter of the vein bypass. At follow up 13% of the patients had died and 217 extremities in 195 patients were examined. Using the Chi-square test we found that patency of the bypasses was primarily dependent uon the diameter of the bypass vein, and secondly on smoking habits and anticogulant therapy...
