Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a rare cause of bone and joint infections. We report a case of calcaneal osteomyelitis due to this microorganism with a review of all published. A 23-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of pain and inflammation in the calcaneus area. Osteomyelitis was suspected at this location based on computed tomography images. Culture of six bone biopsies and surrounding tissue resulted in the isolation of H. parainfluenzae. Surgical drainage and debridement was performed, and antibiotic treatment was prescribed, resolving the infection...

Different genetic variants in estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1) have been shown to influence bone phenotypes including quantitative bone ultrasound in elderly. We aimed to investigate the role of ESR1 polymorphisms in bone mass assessed by calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) in a population of young adults. The study sample consisted of 466 healthy individuals of Caucasian ancestry (315 females and 152 males) aged 18 and 25 years (median age 20.39 ± 2.70). Six ESR1 polymorphisms (rs302033, rs2982552, rs2982575, rs2504063, rs2234693-PvuII and rs9340799-XbaI) were selected as genetic markers and genotyped...

The management of displaced, intra-articular calcaneal fracture represents a surgical challenge to even an experienced orthopedic surgeon. Plate osteosynthesis using an extended lateral approach is complicated by soft tissue problems, while those treated by closed reduction and percutaneous pinning cannot address all the intra-articular fragments sufficiently. The objective of our study is to evaluate restoration of subtalar joint and long-term functional outcomes in intra-articular displaced calcaneal fractures treated with transverse subcondral screws through a small incision on lateral aspect of calcaneus and percutaneously placed axial screws through the calcaneal tuberosity...

INTRODUCTION: Although the extended lateral approach is typically considered the gold standard of treatment for intra-articular calcaneal fractures, a limited lateral approach may be a good alternative in select cases. METHODS: Forty-seven consecutive patients with intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated using the sinus tarsi approach between March 2010 and April 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The functional outcomes [including arc range of motion, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score, and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society ankle/hindfoot (AOFAS) score], bony outcomes (bony restoration and bony union), and complications were evaluated...

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal lengthening is used to correct symptomatic planovalgus foot deformity, but outcomes have been less satisfactory in children with cerebral palsy. This study aimed to define limits of calcaneal lengthening by analyzing the risk factors for undercorrection of deformity. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 20 cases of children with cerebral palsy who underwent calcaneal lengthening of 30 planovalgus feet at a mean age of 11.9 years. Foot deformities were evaluated by the anteroposterior talo-first metatarsal angle (normal, 10 ± 7...

Pain heel constitutes 15% of foot pain. Pain may be caused by plantar fasciitis, calcaneal fractures, calcaneal apophysitis, heel pad atrophy, inflammatory diseases or related with nerve involvement. Tibial, plantar and/or medial nerve entrapment are the neural causes of pain. Most of the heel soft tissue sensation is provided by medial calcaneal nerve. Diagnosis of heel pain due to neural causes depends on history and a careful examination. Surgery should not be undertaken before excluding other causes of heel pain...

Although avulsion fractures of the calcaneal tuberosity are rare injuries, these can be a challenging problem with frequent complications, such as loss of reduction and soft tissue problem. Anatomical reduction and internal fixation are indicated to avoid these pitfalls and to restore function of the triceps surae. However, the best fixation device and operative technique are still controversial. A case that achieved satisfactory clinical outcome through a reattachment technique using the suture bridge augmentation for Achilles tendon avulsion fracture with osteoporotic bony fragment is presented...
