Spermatogenesis begins with spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs), which are located in the basement membrane of the adult testes. Previous studies have described specific biomarkers for undifferentiated porcine spermatogonia or SSCs; however, these markers are not sufficient to understand spermatogenesis at different developmental stages. The objective of this study was characterize the expression of DEAD-Box polypeptide 4 (DDX4, also known as VASA) and tyrosine-protein kinase kit (c-kit), as potential markers of male germ cells in the porcine testis...

BACKGROUND: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) has been recognized for over half a century as a cause of morbidity in infants and children. Over the past 20years, data has emerged linking RSV as a cause of illness in adults resulting in 177,000 annual hospitalizations and up to 14,000 deaths among older adults. OBJECTIVE: Characterize clinical variables in a cohort of adult RSV patients. We hypothesize that emergency physicians do not routinely consider RSV in the differential diagnosis (DDx) of influenza like illness...

Abiotic and biotic processes can be used to remediate DDX (DDT, DDD, DDE, and DDNS) contaminated soils; these processes can be fostered using specific carbon-amendments to stimulate particular soil indigenous microbial communities to improve rates or extent of degradation. In this study, toluene and glycerol were evaluated as cosubstrates under aerobic and anoxic conditions to determine the degradation efficiencies of DDX and to elucidate possible degradation mechanisms. Slurry microcosms experiments were performed during 60 days using pretreated soil with zero-valent iron (ZVI)...

The efficiency of spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) isolation and culture from pubertal donors is currently poor primarily, because of contamination with other testicular cells. This study aimed to purify SSC-like cells using different extracellular matrixes and a discontinuous gradient density. In experiment 1, testes (n=6) were analyzed for histology and SSC-related protein expressions (laminin, SSEA-4, DDX-4 and GFRα-1). After enzymatic digestion, the cell suspension was plated onto either a laminin- or gelatin-coated dish...

OBJECTIVES: This study's objective was to determine whether tuition in medical documentation enhanced the ability of emergency medicine interns to produce effective medical records. METHODS: The study adopted a case control design, using a retrospective document audit methodology, following an education intervention during the 'More Learning for Interns in Emergency' (MoLIE) programme. It was conducted in a tertiary hospital that supports five 10 week rotations of 12 interns each year (n = 60)...

In diatoms, metabolic activity during long dark periods leads to a chlororespiratory electron flow, which is accompanied by the build-up of a proton gradient strong enough to activate the diadinoxanthin (Ddx) de-epoxidation reaction of the Ddx cycle. In the present study, the impact of chlororespiration on non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of chlorophyll fluorescence and the regulation of the Ddx cycle in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana was investigated by manipulation of the redox state of the photosynthetic electron transport chain during darkness...

A method for the simultaneous determination of semi-volatile organic contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides) in marine samples has been developed, for the first time, using the stir bar sorptive extraction technique (SBSE) and thermal desorption coupled to capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SBSE-TD-GC-MS). Polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) was used for the extraction of the selected analytes and two procedures have been optimised and validated, one for seawater samples (100 mL) and another for interstitial water samples (10 mL), using PDMS stir bars of 20 mm and 10 mm size, respectively...

Concentrations of ten DDTs (2,2-bis-(chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane) of which p,p'-DDA (2,2-bis(chlorophenyl)acetic acid), p,p'-DDM (bis(chlorophenyl)methane) and p,p'-DBP (dichlorobenzophenone) are often neglected, were measured in 25 water and 25 sedimentary samples from Bohai Bay and its adjacent Haihe Basin. The ratio of o,p'-DDX/p,p'-DDX in the upper reaches of Yongdingxin River ranged from 0.71 to 2.44, suggesting that the potential source of pollution would be the manufacturing or use of dicofol near this river...

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether self-reports of chronic joint symptoms or doctor-diagnosed arthritis can validly identify persons with clinically verifiable arthritis. METHODS: The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a telephone health survey, defines a case of arthritis as a self-report of chronic joint symptoms (CJS) and/or doctor-diagnosed arthritis (DDx). A sample of health plan enrollees aged 45-64 years and >/= 65 years with upcoming annual physical examinations were surveyed by telephone using the 2002 BRFSS CJS and DDx questions...

BACKGROUND: In contrast to differential diagnosis (ddx) of older adolescent and adult bipolarity (BP), which includes schizophrenia and substance use disorders, the main ddx of prepubertal and early adolescent BP is attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). To address this ddx issue, and to provide prepubertal mania manifestations, interim baseline data are presented from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded study 'Phenomenology and Course of Pediatric Bipolarity'...

The prevalence of dementia increases with age from 1% at age 60 to about 40% at age 85. Four types of dementia--Alzheimer's disease, diffuse Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and vascular dementia--account for 90% of all cases. The office-based physician can recognize these dementing illnesses in older patients by using existing consensus criteria. Differential diagnosis has an important bearing on patient management and prognosis, due to the potential value of treatment with some medications, possible drug toxicities in certain circumstances, and the complex care needs of patients and their families...
