OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the value of quantitative parameters derived from dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (DCE-US) and a combination of these quantitative parameters with the LR-M classification criteria in distinguishing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) nodules and non-HCC malignancies. METHODS: HCC and non-HCC malignant nodules were grouped using pathologic results, and each nodule was classified using CEUS LI-RADS 2017. Quantitative CEUS analysis of each nodule was performed using VueBox, and quantitative parameters were compared between the HCC and non-HCC groups...

Hypoglycemia is common in diabetic populations using insulin or insulin secretagogues, but rare in non-diabetics. A 60-year-old non-diabetic male presented with repeated episodes of abnormal behavior persisting for 10-15 minutes for seven days, associated with sweating, intense hunger, and relief on food intake, with no history of insulin or secretagogue intake, with stable vitals and normal systemic examination. Laboratory tests during attacks revealed low blood sugar, high serum insulin, and normal C-peptide levels, with no evidence of pancreatic or extrapancreatic hyperinsulinism, and serum anti-insulin antibody levels >100 U/ml...

UNLABELLED: The seroepidemiology of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in South Africa is limited. We investigated anti-HEV IgM and IgG, in residual hepatitis A, B, and C negative serology specimens, at our public sector Free State (FS) laboratory. Of 299 specimens (01 May-31 October 2020), 182/299 (60.9%) had anti-HEV IgG and 1/299 (0.33%) had anti-HEV IgM. High HEV seroprevalence across different age groups suggests a different epidemiology in the FS, necessitating further research. CONTRIBUTION: The need for HEV research in South Africa is highlighted...

The treatment of ovarian cancer remains a medical challenge and its malignant progression is connected with obvious changes in both tissue and cell stiffness. However, the accurate mechanical-responsive molecules and mechanism remains unclear in ovarian cancer. Based on our previous results combined with the crucial regulatory role of STAT3 in the malignant progression of various cancer types, we want to investigate the relationship between STAT3 and matrix stiffness in ovarian cancer and further explore the potential mechanisms...

Uterine leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant gynecologic tumor that arises from the myometrial or endometrial stromal precursor cells. This tumor has the highest prevalence in the pre- and post-is more frequent between 40 and 60 years old. It has a very unfavorable prognosis: only early-stage tumors have an acceptable prognosis; unfortunately, it is often diagnosed accidentally, typically on an advanced stage, when hematological metastases have already spread. Surgery is the main treatment strategy, while systemic treatment and radiotherapy are not recommended due to the lack of results...

Adrenal cysts lined by thyroid follicular epithelium are rare, with only 14 reported cases of "ectopic thyroid tissue" to date. While the primary consideration for differential diagnosis is thyroid carcinoma metastasis, exclusion of metastases is determined based on the absence of a primary thyroid lesion, serological euthyroidism, lack of thyroglobulin elevation, and absence of epithelial atypia. Herein, we report 2 cases of adrenal cysts lined by thyroid follicular epithelium. Case 1 was a 60-year-old woman with a right adrenal cyst...

METHODS: A total of 60 patients, ≥40years of age, with a diagnosis of PACG or cataract, 30 in each group were recruited. Accurately defining glioma infiltration is crucial for optimizing radiotherapy and surgery, but glioma infiltration is heterogeneous and MRI imperfectly defines the tumor extent. Currently, it is impossible to determine the tumor infiltration gradient within a FLAIR signal. O-(2-[18F]fluoroethyl)-L-tyrosine (FET)-PET often reveals high-grade glioma infiltration beyond contrast-enhancing areas on MRI. Here, we studied FET uptake dynamics in tumor and normal brain structures by dual-timepoint (10 min and 40-60 min post-injection) acquisition to optimize analysis protocols for defining glioma infiltration...

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) overlap with primary psychiatric disorders (PPD) making diagnosis challenging. Serum neurofilament light (sNfL) is a candidate biomarker to distinguish bvFTD from PPD, but large-scale studies in PPD are lacking. OBJECTIVE: Determine factors that influence sNfL from a large database of PPD patients, and test its diagnostic accuracy. DESIGN, SETTINGS, SUBJECTS, MEASUREMENTS: Clinical data of people aged 40-81 were obtained from healthy subjects (n = 69), and patients with PPD (n = 848) or bvFTD (n = 82)...

Extraintestinal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are extremely rare, and adrenal GISTs are even exceptional. Only three cases have been reported in the literature thus far, the current case being the fourth. This case demonstrates the need of including extraintestinal GIST in the differential diagnosis when investigating adrenal tumors. Herein, we present a case of adrenal GIST diagnosed in a 60-year-old female patient who had a left adrenal GIST surgically removed as an adrenal tumor.

Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MBC) is very rare among all invasive breast carcinomas, accounting for less than 1.0% of them. MBCs are classified into five subtypes, including mixed MBC - where the mix might be multiple metaplastic elements or a mixture of epithelial and mesenchymal elements. Overall survival for mixed MBC tends to correlate with a significantly worse outcome. Therefore, an early accurate diagnosis and surgical treatment for mixed MBCs must allow for an improved quality of life and better prognosis...

Primary Mucinous eccrine carcinoma (MEC) is a rare malignant neoplasm of skin believed to arise from eccrine sweat gland commonly with periocular involvement. Here we report a case of 60-year male with a recurrence of unilateral nasomaxillary mass and epiphora. Imaging suggested nasolacrimal duct as probable site of origin. Histopathology and immunochemistry confirmed the diagnosis and managed surgically. This case report emphasizes the significance of including primary MEC in the differential diagnosis of nasomaxillary mass for its recurrence nature and histological similarity with metastasis from other viscera...
