Idiopathic ischaemic infarction of the stomach is an extremely rare condition since only 2 other cases have been published in the Literature so far. The Authors report a case of such entity on a 75 year old male patient, admitted from the accident and emergency department because of a upper digestive tract haemorrhage with clinical signs of hypovolemic shock. The patient subsequently underwent an upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy that suspected an ulcerated gastric neoplasm. The patient therefore underwent a total gastrectomy and was discharged home on p...

The role of several imaging techniques in patients submitted to pancreatic surgery with special emphasis to single-slice helical computed tomography (CT) and multidetector-row CT (MDCT) was reviewed. Several surgical options may be performed such as Whipple procedure, distal pancreatectomy, central pancreatectomy, and total pancreatectomy. Ultrasound examination may be used to detect peritoneal fluid in the early post-operative period as well as lesion recurrence in long-term follow-up. Radiological gastrointestinal studies has a major role in evaluation of intestinal functionality...

The Authors describe a case of massive haemorragic gastritis in a child who previously underwent total oesophagogastric dissociation without complementary pyloroplasty. The complication was successfully treated by an emergency resection of the fundus. The Authors believe that the complication was probably related to vagal denervation with consequent gastric stagnation and hypergastrinaemia.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Damage control laparotomy is a new approach to the more severe abdominal traumas. It stems from a better understanding of the physiopathology of the haemorragic shock. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A national retrospective study from 27 centers about 109 trauma patients who underwent a damage control procedure between January 1990 and December 2001, is analysed. Surgical procedures included 97 hepatic packing, 10 abdominal packing, 4 exclusive skin closure, 1 open laparotomy technique and 3 digestive stapplings...

The lipohyperplasia of the ileocaecal valve is a condition of rare clinical observation mainly characterized by an abnormal accumulation of adipose tissue along the submucosal layer of the ileocaecal valve. This pathology presents an unspecific symptomatology that can make difficult the differential diagnosis with a local neoplastic process. Sometimes this pathology can be the cause of gastrointestinal bleeding of unknown origin. The Authors report a case of their observation that requested an emergency surgical operation for the massive digestive haemorrage at presentation...
