Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune condition with a genetic predisposition. It has underlying autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic cells that produce insulin. It is often accompanied by other autoimmune conditions. This article focuses on celiac disease (CD), also an autoimmune disease. It is caused by gluten exposure. Both these conditions have genetic predisposing factors. Apart from the genetic background, aberrant small intestine immune response, inflammation, and different grades of enteropathy present in T1DM and CD are the same...

Aim Our aim was to investigate the autoimmune and genetic relationship between primary hypophysitis (PH) and Celiac disease (CD). Methods The study was retrospective and patients with PH followed in our clinic between 2007 and 2022 were evaluated. Clinical, endocrinologic, pathologic, radiologic findings and treatment modalities were assessed. Patients diagnosed with CD in the Gastroenterology outpatient clinic in 2020-2022 were included in the study as a control group. Information such as sociodemographic data, year of diagnosis, HLA DQ2/8 information, Celiac disease-specific antibody levels, pathologic results of duodenal biopsy, treatment received, follow-up status, additional diseases, hormone use, and surgical history was obtained from patient records at PH...

Influenza vaccination (IV) aims primarily to protect high-risk groups against severe influenza-associated disease and death. It is recommended in Spain for high-risk groups, including Healthcare workers (HCWs). However, vaccination uptake has been consistently below desirable levels. The objective of this study were to evaluate influenza vaccination coverage using data from the regional vaccination registry, during 2021-2022 season, among HCWs in public hospitals in Autonomous Community of Madrid (CAM) and to explore factors associated with influenza vaccination...

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are common conditions in which an individual's immune system reacts against its healthy cells. This condition is a common cause of morbidity and mortality, with an estimated prevalence ranging from 5 per 100,000 to more than 500 per 100,000. According to the National Stem Cell Foundation (NSCF), ADs are prevalent in about 4% of the world's population, which creates a burden on society due to the high treatment cost. ADs show a clear gender bias with a higher prevalence among women, occurring at a rate of 2:1 female-to-male ratio...

METHODS: We targeted individuals with T1D and CD at a major tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. We gathered retrospective data from medical records and prospectively assessed glycemic control using HbA1c and ambulatory glucose metrics, adherence to a GFD using the Celiac Dietary Adherence Test (CDAT), and QoL using the Celiac Disease Quality of Life survey (CD-QoL)...

DESCRIPTION: Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a disorder caused by the failure of the pancreas to deliver a minimum/threshold level of specific pancreatic digestive enzymes to the intestine, leading to the maldigestion of nutrients and macronutrients, resulting in their variable deficiencies. EPI is frequently underdiagnosed and, as a result, patients are often not treated appropriately. There is an urgent need to increase awareness of and treatment for this condition. The aim of this American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Clinical Practice Update Expert Review was to provide Best Practice Advice on the epidemiology, evaluation, and management of EPI...

Celiac disease (CD) accompanying autoimmune endocrine diseases (AED) is generally asymptomatic. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of clinically overt or silent CD in patients diagnosed with autoimmune endocrinopathy and the clinical effects of silent CD in these endocrinopathies. The study included 166 patients with known or newly diagnosed mono-/polyglandular AED and 90 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. The patients were classified into four groups; type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) (n = 44), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) (n = 68), Addison's disease (AD) (n = 17), and autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) (n = 37)...

AIMS: Between 1985 and 1996, Sweden experienced an "epidemic" of celiac disease with a fourfold increase in incidence in young children. Timing and amount of gluten introduced during infancy have been thought to explain this "epidemic". We aimed to study whether the cumulative incidence of type 1 diabetes differs between children born during the "epidemic" compared to children born after. METHODS: This is a national register study in Sweden comparing the cumulative incidence of type 1 diabetes in two birth cohorts of 240 844 children 0-17 years old born 1992-1993, during the "epidemic", and 179 530 children born 1997-1998, after the "epidemic"...

We report the case of a 74-year-old female with abdominal pain, tarry stools, and tachycardia. Previous history included diabetes mellitus with micro- and macroangiopathy. Imaging revealed portal gas, left sided colitis, and emphysematous gastritis, besides severe atherosclerosis with subtotal celiac trunk occlusion and moderate stenosis of the inferior mesenteric artery. Upper endoscopy revealed findings consistent with focal necrotizing gastritis at the greater curvature and acute esophageal necrosis. Blood cultures immediately grew Clostridium perfringens ...
