BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) are rare conditions that may occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The coexistence of both diseases may pose a risk to patients, potentially resulting in a variety of complications and clinical manifestations. This is considered the first case of a patient who successfully recovered from a critical condition in the postpartum period, with contemporaneous SCAD and RCVS...

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in both genders; however, young women fare the worst, likely reflecting the more complex spectrum of IHD in women when compared to men. Substantial sex-based differences exist in the underlying risk factors, risk enhancers, presentation, diagnosis, and pathophysiology of IHD that are mainly attributed to the influence of female sex hormones. This article reviews the spectrum of IHD including obstructive epicardial coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction with no obstructive coronary artery disease, ischemia with no obstructive coronary artery disease, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, coronary microvascular dysfunction, vasospastic angina, and coronary thrombosis/embolism that occur in women throughout various stages of their life cycle...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare cause of myocardial infarction in young women. An association of fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) with SCAD has been well established; a significant proportion of SCAD patients may have typical FMD findings in other noncoronary arteries. The current consensus recommends arterial imaging screening from head to pelvis using computed tomography angiography (CTA) or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in SCAD. Genetic testing for FMD should be considered in high-risk cases...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a condition that leads to tearing of the coronary vessel wall in the absence of trauma, iatrogenic injury, or atherosclerosis. SCAD is an important cause of myocardial infarction in young women, leading to significant cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Within cohorts of women aged around 50 years on average, who experience acute coronary syndrome, the prevalence of SCAD is 22.5%- 35%. Over the past decade, SCAD research has expanded rapidly, leading to improved understanding of this condition...

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary artery disease (MINOCA) is defined as acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with angiographically nonobstructive coronary artery disease. MINOCA represents 6% of all AMI cases and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. However, the wide array of pathophysiological factors and causes associated with MINOCA presents a diagnostic conundrum. Therefore, we conducted a contemporary systematic review of the pathophysiology of MINOCA...

BACKGROUND: The etiology and significance of coronary artery tortuosity (TCA) among patients with spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective imaging cohort study was to report echocardiographic findings and evaluate whether TCA correlates with cardiac anatomy and function among SCAD patients. Comorbidities including fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) and outcomes were also assessed. METHODS: TCA was determined by coronary angiography performed during the diagnosis of SCAD, and cardiac structure and function was evaluated by prospective comprehensive echocardiography...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) can be treated conservatively. However, some SCAD patients can develop cardiogenic shock (CS). We evaluated the outcomes of SCAD-related CS using data from a national population-based cohort study from January 1, 2016, to December 30, 2019. In our study of 32,640 patients with SCAD, about 10.6% of patients presented with cardiogenic shock. We found that SCAD patients with cardiogenic shock had higher mortality as well as greater complications including use of mechanical circulatory devices, arrythmias, respiratory support, and acute heart failure compared to those without cardiogenic shock...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this manuscript is to provide a concise summary of recent developments in the approach to and treatment of women with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). RECENT FINDINGS: This review covers terminology updates relating to ACS and myocardial injury and infarction. Updates on disparities in recognition, treatments, and outcomes of women with ACS due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease are covered. Other causes of ACS, including spontaneous coronary artery dissection and myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary artery disease are discussed, given the increased frequency in women compared with men...

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery rupture (SCAR) is a rare and life-threatening complication after lung cancer surgery. We present a case of SCAR following left upper lobectomy, successfully managed through emergency thoracotomy and coronary artery ligation. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old male patient underwent left upper lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection for lung cancer. The surgery was performed using single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and there were no observed complications during the procedure...

Left ventricular free wall rupture is a lethal complication of myocardial infarction. Although emergent surgical repair is the treatment of choice, the method of repair remains highly individualized. This report presents a case of spontaneous coronary artery dissection in a patient with Turner syndrome that led to left ventricular free wall rupture and was successfully repaired on cardiopulmonary bypass using a suture-free technique with the EVARREST Fibrin Sealant Patch.

Cardiovascular conditions in the spectrum of acute coronary syndromes are characterized by sex differences with regard to pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, invasive and pharmacologic treatment, and outcomes. This review delves into these differences, including specific subsets like myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries or Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, and alternative diagnoses like Takotsubo cardiomyopathy or myocarditis. Moreover, practical considerations are enclosed, on how a sex-specific approach should be integrated in clinical practice: in fact, personal history should focus on female-specific risk factors, and hormonal status and hormonal therapy should be assessed...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is the development of an intramural hematoma that causes a false lumen to form, leading to occlusion and ischemia. It is a rare but separate pathologic cause of acute coronary syndrome, more commonly occurring in females and often associated with underlying vascular conditions. Definitive diagnosis requires invasive coronary angiography. Management is similar to that of myocardial infarction caused by atherosclerosis; however, the majority of SCADs are managed conservatively, as stenting often leads to worse outcomes...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a cause of myocardial infarction without obstructive coronary artery disease (MINOCA). It is determined by a coronary artery wall layers separation, which occurs regardless of traumatic or iatrogenic injuries. Even if it is often a missed diagnosis, its incidence is growing along with the improvement of intracoronary imaging techniques that allow for better detection. The main angiographical classification distinguishes three different forms, with slightly different prognoses at long-term follow up...

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a non-traumatic and non-iatrogenic separation of the coronary arterial wall. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis is reported following the PRISMA guidelines and is registered in the PROSPERO database. A literature search was focused on female patients in generative period (16-55 of age) with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) caused by SCAD, and comparison from that database NP-SCAD (spontaneous coronary artery dissection in non pregnant women) and P-SCAD (spontaneous coronary artery dissection in pregnant women)...

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and accounts for roughly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States. Women in particular face significant disparities in their cardiovascular care when compared to men, both in the diagnosis and treatment of CVD. Sex differences exist in the prevalence and effect of cardiovascular risk factors. For example, women with history of traditional cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, tobacco use, and diabetes carry a higher risk of major cardiovascular events and mortality when compared to men...
