INTRODUCTION: Mean platelet volume (MPV) assists the differential diagnosis of inherited thrombocytopenia (IT) but lacks standardisation and varies between automated analysers. Classification of IT based on mean platelet diameter (MPD) has been proposed by an international collaborative study but has not been validated. METHODS: To assess the applicability of MPD to classify forms of IT, digital images of blood films from patients with established genetic causes for IT were generated, and the MPD measured (ZEISS Axio-scanner and Image J software) by a blinded reviewer...

Objectives: TNM staging, especially for lymph node metastasis, is the scoring system most widely used among prognostic factors for cancer survival. Several biomarkers have been studied as serologic markers, but their specificity is low and clinical applications are difficult. This study aimed to establish a scoring system for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) using platelet (PLT) and mean platelet volume (MPV) levels measured postoperatively and to evaluate their significance as prognostic factors...

A strong relationship exists between acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and platelets (PLTs) volume. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a parameter of PLT functions and a marker for increased PLT activation. The aim of this study was to determine early changes in number of total PLT and MPV in different manifestation of ACS and to find out predictive value of MPV in the spectrum of ACS. This was a prospective study. One hundred thirty-four ACS patients were enrolled, 76 of them finished the study. PLT and MPV in patients with unstable angina, non-ST elevation, and ST elevation myocardial infarctions were determined on arrival and 1, 3, 72 hours, and 7 days after the admission to hospital...

OBJECTIVE: Paediatric laboratory reference intervals used in Africa and Asia may be derived from historical intervals of predominantly Caucasian infants in Europe or North America. These intervals may therefore not be compatible with the range of normality for developing country populations. We aimed to compare haematology and biochemistry parameters in healthy South African infants with local laboratory reference intervals. METHODS: We compared the baseline haematology and biochemistry results of 634 (316 male and 318 female) HIV-unexposed infants, aged 3-6 months, living in a rural area of the Western Cape Province, South Africa, against laboratory reference intervals supplied by the South African National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS)...

BACKGROUND: The prognosis and behavior of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) vary and may be divergent even at the same stage or tumor grade. Markers of systemic inflammatory response are readily available and are inexpensive, and have been shown to be prognostic factors in several cancers. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic utility of markers of systemic inflammatory response in patients with PNETs. METHODS: A prospective study of 97 patients with PNETs was performed (median follow-up of 15 months, range 12-73 months)...

Over the past years, there is a growing number of newly diagnosed pediatric patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Severe course of CD often requires biological treatment with Infliximab (IFX). Loss of response to biological treatment is a major problem. Mean platelet volume (MPV) was reported as a good marker of sustained response to IFX therapy in adults. This study is to determine whether MPV measured prior to IFX therapy and a er its third dose can be used as a predictive marker of sustained response to biological therapy in children with severe course of CD...

An increased systemic and local inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This review will discuss the role of hematological indices: white blood cells (WBC), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), and platelet indices, that is, platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) in the case of ACS. In recent years, a strong interest has been drawn to these indices, given that they may provide independent information on pathophysiology, risk stratification, and optimal management...

BACKGROUND: Kidney biopsy can result in bleeding complications. Pre-biopsy testing using bleeding time (BT) is controversial. New whole blood haemostasis tests, like platelet function analyser 100 (PFA-100) and multiple electrode aggregometer (MEA) might perform better. We postulated that PFA-100 would be suitable to replace BT pre-biopsy. METHODS: In 154 patients, transplanted kidney biopsies were performed after measurement of bleeding time, PFA-100, MEA, and mean platelet volume (MPV)...

The objective of the study was to determine the effects of acute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on hematological parameters in sedentary men. Ten healthy, non-smoker, and sedentary men aged between 18 and 24 years participated in the study. All subjects performed four Wingate tests with 4 min intervals between the tests. Blood samples were collected at pre-exercise, immediately after, 3 and 6 h after the fourth Wingate test. Hematological parameters were analyzed in these samples. The results showed that hematocrit percentage, hemoglobin values, red cell count, mean cell volume, platelet count, total white cell count, and counts of the white cell subgroups increased immediately after the acute HIIT and their values began to return to resting levels 3 h after exercise, and completely returned to resting levels 6 h after exercise...

BACKGROUND: Persistent low-level hemolysis (LLH) during continuous-flow mechanical circulatory support is associated with subsequent thrombosis. Free hemoglobin from ongoing hemolysis scavenges nitric oxide (NO) to create an NO deficiency which can augment platelet function leading to a prothrombotic state. The phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, sildenafil, potentiates NO signaling to inhibit platelet function. Accordingly, we investigated the association of sildenafil administration and thrombotic events in patients with LLH during Heart Mate II support...

As a hallmark of platelet activation, mean platelet volume (MPV) has been identified to be associated with various malignancies. However, the correlation between MPV, mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio (MPR), and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. The aim of this study is to clarify the relevance of MPV and MPR in patients with locally advanced ESCC. Four hundred and fifty-seven cases with newly diagnosed locally advanced ESCC followed by radical surgery and 240 healthy subjects matched for age and gender were included in this study...

BACKGROUND It is now widely acknowledged that chronic inflammation is closely associated with the process of cancer development. As a simple noninvasive blood-based test, hematological parameters in the routine blood test have been considered as inflammation markers. We aimed to evaluate platelet count (PC), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), white blood cell count (WBC), mean platelet volume (MPV), number of neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio (NLR), and platelet count/lymphocytes ratio (PLR) as surrogate inflammatory markers in breast cancer (BC) patients, and we compared these to those in healthy individuals...
