INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder associated with both microvascular and macrovascular complications. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a marker of platelet activity, which plays a major role in the development of vascular complications of DM. The aim of this study is to compare the MPV levels before and after the decrease of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in a large diabetic population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted on type 2 diabetic patients from the outpatient clinic for 1 year between 2014 and 2015 with the participation of 595 diabetic patients...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Current knowledge on the role of platelets and platelet-derived microparticles (PMPs) on the immune system has been fast-growing. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic auto-immune disorder characterized by a loss of tolerance toward nuclear auto-antigens. Although recent studies allowed a better understanding of SLE pathogenesis, there is an urgent need for the development of new treatments and the identification of new biomarkers to assess the disease activity...

BACKGROUND: There is interest about the role of platelet (PLT) number and function in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD patients have abnormalities of PLT number and function, especially mean platelet volume (MPV) which is known as a novel biomarker for atherosclerosis. We decided to compare PLT number and function between NAFLD and healthy participants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, two groups of patients (65 cases with NAFLD and 65 cases without NAFLD) were included consecutively...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Parameters derived from complete blood count such as mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil to lymphocyte (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte (PLR) are recently proposed as measures of inflammation in addition to C-reactive protein (CRP), a classical inflammatory marker. Significant association of these parameters with atherosclerosis and complications have increasingly been reported. Our aim is to evaluate relationship between these parameters and presence of myocardial viability assessed with positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy...

BACKGROUND: Treated HIV infection is associated with heightened inflammation which can contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We have previously shown that anisocytosis, as measured by red cell distribution width (RDW), is independently associated with prevalent CVD in people living with HIV (PLHIV). In this study, we sought to identify immune correlates of RDW in PLHIV receiving antiretroviral therapy. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of 147 virally-suppressed PLHIV, who had LDL < 130 mg/dL and evidence of heightened inflammation, in a randomized trial of statin therapy...

INTRODUCTION: Radioembolization for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) induces liver volume changes referred to as "atrophy-hypertrophy complex". The aim of this study was to investigate lobar liver volume changes after unilateral radioembolization and to search for factors associated with hypertrophy of the untreated lobe. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five patients were retrospectively evaluated. Inclusion criteria were: (1) right-lobar radioembolization for unresectable unilateral HCC, (2) available liver computed tomography scans before, 1, 3, and at least 6 months after radioembolization...

BACKGROUND: Bleeding is a leading cause of preventable death following severe injury. Prothrombin complex concentrates (PCC) treat inborn coagulation disorders and reverse oral anticoagulants, but are proposed for use in "factor-based" resuscitation strategies. Few studies exist for this indication in acidosis, or that compare 3-factor (3PCC) versus 4-factor (4PCC) products. We aimed to assess and compare their safety and efficacy in a porcine model of severe hemorrhagic shock and coagulopathy...

Severe exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) is largely dilutional, whereas contributions of sodium loss remain equivocal. We present a case of EAH with encephalopathy involving an experienced male cyclist with no recollection of the event. We thereby conducted a retrospective analysis of biochemical trajectories during hospital recovery. The normalization of serum [Na], in context with changes in other variables, offered a 'reverse' perspective of the underlying pathophysiology. The following biochemical changes were temporally observed, with the return of normonatremia: 1) a decrease in serum potassium and calcium concentrations (absence of extracellular fluid dilution); 2) a decrease in total protein, blood urea nitrogen, hematocrit and hemoglobin (plasma volume expansion); and 3) an increase in mean platelet and red cell corpuscular volumes (cellular expansion after total body water and sodium deficits)...

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is administered during many types of surgery, but its efficacy and safety are increasingly questioned. Evaluation of the efficacy of agents, such as desmopressin (DDAVP; 1-deamino-8-D-arginine-vasopressin), that may reduce perioperative blood loss is needed. OBJECTIVES: To examine the evidence for the efficacy of DDAVP in reducing perioperative blood loss and the need for red cell transfusion in people who do not have inherited bleeding disorders...

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes. The mean platelet volume (MPV) is an index of platelet activation reported to be influenced by inflammation. We investigated the MPV in patients with PV relative to controls. This case-control study included 160 patients with PV and 640 age- and sex-matched controls. The MPV, platelet count, and other inflammatory parameters were measured for all study participants. A significantly decreased MPV was observed in patients with PV compared with controls, 9...

BACKGROUND: In patients with coronary artery disease, coronary collateral circulation (CCC) develops as an adaptation to ischemia and contributes toward reduction of cardiovascular events. Recently, the mean platelet volume-to-lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR) has emerged as a novel and readily available marker of inflammation and thrombosis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MPVLR and development of CCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 332 patients with stable angina pectoris undergoing coronary arteriography were enrolled and divided on the basis of the development of CCC into two groups: group with adequate CCC (n=243) and group with impaired CCC (n=89)...

OBJECTIVE: Liver dysfunction due to heart failure (HF) is known as congestive hepatopathy. It has recently been reported that liver stiffness assessed by transient elastography reflects increased central venous pressure. The Fibrosis-4 (FIB4) index (age (years) × aspartate aminotransferase (IU/L)/platelet count (10(9)/L) × square root of alanine aminotransferase (IU/L)) is expected to be useful for evaluating liver stiffness in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We aimed to investigate the impact of the FIB4 index on HF prognosis, with consideration for liver fibrosis markers and underlying cardiac function...

CTAD (citrate-theophylline-adenosine-dipyridamole) has been shown to be an almost universal anticoagulant in human and feline medicine, allowing most hematology, coagulation, and biochemical analyses. Forty canine blood specimens were collected in CTAD, EDTA, heparin, and citrate for hematology, biochemistry, and coagulation analyses. CTAD partially limited platelet aggregation observed in EDTA blood smears. CTAD specimens gave similar and well-correlated results for most variables of a complete blood cell count, except for mean corpuscular volume, which was moderately higher, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, which was moderately lower in CTAD than in EDTA; reticulocyte and platelet indexes were poorly correlated...
