BACKGROUND: Controversy has recently broken out over the potential carcinogenic risk associated with exposure to UV lamps for permanent nail polish. The new LED-based polymerization devices, and their potential biological effect has not been analyzed to this date. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the emission power and its potential biological effects on the skin of 2 types of UV LED and fluorescent curing lamps under normal use conditions compared to doses of sunlight exposure...

Over the past few years, venereal or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been on the rise worldwide requiring additional specialized monographic consultations to specifically treat STIs. Therefore, the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) Research Working Group on STIs and HIV has drafted this document with the necessary requirements in terms of infrastructure, personnel, technology, specific materials for sample collection, and needs for current therapeutic options. Strict emphasis is placed on the protection of patient privacy...

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission remains an important health issue, with a high burden that is felt across the world. This work aims to analyze the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of newly diagnosed patients with HIV in a Department of Dermatology and Venereology. A retrospective observational study was conducted from all health records of newly diagnosed patients with HIV from a Dermatology unit from January 2011 through December 2020. A total of 134 patients with new HIV diagnoses were included in the analysis...

Allergic contact dermatitis induced by the use of ophthalmic topical drugs is one of the most common causes of eyelid dermatitis. The introduction of new formulations, both of active ingredients and excipients, and the lack of marketing in some of them, makes patch testing in patients whose source of contact are topical ophthalmic drugs truly challenging. Across this manuscript, most, if not all, topical ophthalmic drugs used in our national health system have been collected, including information on the allergens available, and the concentration and vehicle advised for those that still remain unavailable...

Men who have sex with men (MSM) is an inclusive term used to refer to phenotypic males who have insertive or receptive sex (penile-anal or penile-oral) with other phenotypic males, including people who are transgender or have other gender identities. MSM may report their sexual orientation as homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual, or something else, but this stated sexual orientation may not align with their sexual attraction or behaviors. Several health conditions disproportionately affect MSM compared with age-matched heterosexual men, including HIV infection, anal cancer, syphilis, and depression...

BACKGROUND: Productivity costs of STIs reflect the value of lost time due to STI morbidity and mortality, including time spent travelling to, waiting for, and receiving STI treatment. The purpose of this study was to provide updated estimates of the average lifetime productivity cost for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, per incident infection. METHODS: We adapted published decision tree models from recent studies of the lifetime medical costs of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in the United States...

BACKGROUND: HIV and syphilis disproportionately impact communities with low access to primary care, who often utilize urgent care centers (UCC) for sexual healthcare. UCC visits represent an opportunity for identification and treatment of syphilis and linkage to HIV testing and prevention services. We describe a universal, opt-out syphilis screening program pilot at an Atlanta UCC. METHODS: A chart review was performed on patients 18 years and older who were offered opt-out syphilis screening and had a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test collected from 9/1/21 to 12/31/21...

Malignant syphilis (MS) is a rare variant of secondary syphilis. Also known as rupioid syphilis, MS is characterized by the presence of multiple papules, papulopustules, black lamellate crust that may resemble an oyster shell, or nodules with ulceration lacking central clearing. MS is often associated with immunodeficiency and frequently co-occurs with HIV infection. We here report a case of MS in a patient with HIV infection. HIV infection can cause atypical clinical symptoms of syphilis. In this case, unlike previous cases, cutaneous lesions of MS were limited to the face, making the diagnosis challenging based on clinical findings alone...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the serological diagnosis value of recombinant protein antigen Tp0608 for syphilis. METHOD: 406 patients with various stages of syphilis were enrolled. A recombinant protein antigen Tp0608 was established and ELISA was used to detect patients with various stages of syphilis. The results were compared with the conventional rapid plasma reagin test (RPR) and Treponema pallidum particle agglutination test (TPPA). The sensitivity of Tp0608 recombinant protein and RPR+TPPA screening was 96...

Emergency departments (ED) provide care to populations with high rates of communicable diseases, like HIV, hepatitis C virus, and syphilis. For many patients, the ED is their sole entry point into the healthcare system and they do not routinely access screening and prevention services elsewhere. As such, the ED can serve an important public health role through communicable disease identification, treatment, and prevention. In this article, we examine national recommendations, peer-reviewed literature, and expert consensus to provide cutting edge strategies for implementing communicable infectious disease screening and prevention programs into routine ED care...

As the United States faces a worsening epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), emergency departments (EDs) play a critical role in identifying and treating these infections. The growing health inequities in the distribution and disproportionate impact of STIs add to the urgency of providing high-quality sexual health care through the ED. Changes in population health are reflected in the new Centers for Disease Control recommendations on screening, diagnostic testing, and treatment of STIs. This review covers common, as well as and less common or emerging STIs, and discusses the state-of-the-art guidance on testing paradigms, extragenital sampling, and antimicrobial treatment and prevention of STIs...

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis is a vertical infection caused by Treponema pallidum. Despite the implementation of preventive strategies during pregnancy, its incidence is increasing, and it constitutes an important public health problem. Most patients with congenital syphilis are asymptomatic; however, a small group may develop severe disease at birth with the need of advanced resuscitation in the delivery room, acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, and hemodynamic instability. Therefore, awareness is needed...

This report details a case of neurosyphilis manifesting as concurrent ocular and otosyphilis, an uncommon presentation of the disease. Here, we describe the diagnosis and treatment of a 27-year-old immunocompetent Caucasian male who presented with uveitis and tinnitus. Physical exam was consistent with uveitis and audiometric testing revealed bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Serum rapid plasma reagin (RPR) was reactive at 1:512 with a follow-up cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test likewise reactive at 1:2, confirming neurosyphilis...
