Studies of floral polymorphisms have focused on heterostyly, while stigma-height dimorphism has received considerably less attention. Few studies have examined the reproductive biology of species with stigma-height dimorphism to understand how factors influencing mate availability and pollen transfer are related to morph ratios in populations. Floral morphological traits, especially herkogamy and reciprocity, pollinator visitation, breeding system and spatiotemporal mate availability, are known to affect inter-morph pollination and morph ratios in species with stigma-height dimorphism...

A time gating system has been constructed that is capable of recording high quality Raman spectra of highly fluorescing biological samples while operating below the photodamage threshold. Using a collinear gating geometry and careful attention to power conservation, we have achieved all-optical switching with a one picosecond gating time and 5% peak gating efficiency. The energy per pulse in this instrument is more than 3 orders of magnitude weaker than previous reports. Using this system we have performed proof-of-concept experiments on a sample composed of perylene dissolved in toluene, and the stem of a Jasminum multiflorum plant, the latter case being particularly important for the study of plants used in production of cellulosic biofuels...

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of aromatherapy massage with jasmine oil (Jasminum sambac L., Oleaceae) on humans. Human autonomic parameters, i.e. blood pressure, pulse rate, blood oxygen saturation, breathing rate, and skin temperature, were recorded as indicators of the arousal level of the autonomic nervous system. In addition, subjects had to rate their emotional condition in terms of relaxation, vigor, calmness, attentiveness, mood, and alertness in order to assess subjective behavioral arousal...

The growing demand for flower extracts in perfume trade can primarily be met by increasing flower production and multiplying planting material. The major commercial aromatic flower yielding plants including Jasminum officinale L., a member of the Family Oleaceae have drawn the attention of a large section of the concerned sectors leading to a thrust upon developing advanced propagation technologies for these floral crops, in addition to conventional nature-dependent agro-techniques. This chapter describes concisely and critically, a protocol developed for in vitro propagation of Jasminum officinale by shoot regeneration from existing as well as newly developed adventitious axillary buds via proper phytohormonal stimulation...

The present study investigated whether exposure to aromas during recess periods affects work performance. Subjects comprised 36 healthy male students (mean age, 24.2 +/- 2.2 years) who were randomly divided into three groups: (1) control group, not exposed to aroma during recesses; (2) jasmine group, exposed to jasmine aroma during recesses; and (3) lavender group, exposed to lavender aroma during recesses. All participants completed five work sessions performing a task requiring concentration on a computer monitor, with each session lasting 60 min...
