BACKGROUND: Panicum turgidum, desert grass, has not reported any detailed phytochemical or biological study as yet. OBJECTIVE: To establish P. turgidum secondary metabolite profile and to assess its antihepatotoxic effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled to quadrupole high-resolution time of flight mass spectrometry (qTOF-MS) was used for large-scale secondary metabolites profiling in P. turgidum extract, alongside assessing median lethal dose (LD50) and hepatoprotective effect against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intoxication...

The effect of being overweight on seminal variables was assesed in 165 fertile men. Participants were divided into three groups: fertile men with normal body mass index (BMI) (18.5-24.9 kg/m(2)), fertile overweight men (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m(2)) and fertile obese men (BMI >30 kg/m(2)). Medical history was taken, a clinical examination conducted. Semen analysis was undertaken and BMI measured. Seminal reactive oxygen species (ROS) was estimated by chemiluminescent assay, sperm vitality by the hypo-osmotic swelling test and sperm DNA fragmentation by propidium iodide staining with flowcytometry...

Two selective spectrophotometric and TLC-densitometric methods were developed for determination of mesalazine (ME) and its two toxic impurities, 4-amino phenol (4AP) and salicylic acid (SA) without preliminary separation. The proposed methods are: ratio difference in the subtracted spectra (RDSS) {Method 1}, area under the curve (AUC) {Method 2} and TLC-densitometric {Method 3}. In method {1} combination of measuring the amplitude of the constant at 350 nm (using standard spectrum of 10 µg/mL ME as a divisor) and ratio difference in the subtracted ratio spectrum for determination of 4AP and SA using the ratio difference at 221...

The aim of this study was to determine the relative importance of the kinetics of antiviral response compared to baseline host and virological factors for predicting treatment outcome. A retrospective analysis of 285 chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients, encompassing genotypes 4 treated with peginterferon alpha-2a and ribavirin, was performed. Baseline characteristics were compared across HCV genotypes and pretreatment factors associated with rapid virological response (RVR) were identified. The relative significance of RVR compared to other baseline factors for predicting sustained virological response was analyzed by multiple logistic regression analysis...

BACKGROUND: Fluid overload in infants can result from inappropriate volume expansion (VE). The aim of this work was to evaluate the beneficial values of Transoesophageal Doppler TED in intraoperative fluid guidance versus standard clinical monitoring parameters in infants undergoing Kasai operation. METHODS: Forty infants scheduled for Kasai procedure were randomly allocated into two groups (Doppler and clinical group). In Doppler group decided to provide VE (10-30 mI/kg of Eydroxyethyl starches HES) when the index stroke volume decreased by ≥ 15% from the baseline value, in clinical group, hemodynamic variables triggering colloid administration mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) less than 20% below baseline or central venous pressure (CVP) < 5 cmH2O in both groups: Ringer's acetate was infused at constant rate (6 m l/kg/h)...

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a major public health problem for all ages. Despite the high prevalence of smoking among the Saudi population, there is limited information about levels of urinary cotinine in Saudi children exposed to SHS. The aim of the study was to assess the exposure of schoolchildren to ETS, and measure their urinary cotinine levels. Multistage cluster sampling was carried out, where schoolchildren from 4 schools were randomly chosen from primary schools in Taif city. A questionnaire including questions on SHS exposure and smoking rules in the residence were sent to students parents/guardians...

Diazinon (DZN) is a common organophosphorus insecticide extensively used for agriculture and veterinary purposes. DZN toxicity is not limited to insects; it also induces harmful effects in mammals and birds. Our experiment evaluated the protective and antioxidant potential of sesame oil (SO) and (or) alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) against DZN toxicity in male Wistar albino rats. DZN-treated animals exhibited macrocytic hypochromic anemia and significant increases in serum biochemical parameters related to liver injury, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), γ-glutamyl transferase (γGT), cholesterol, and triglycerides...

OBJECTIVES: Studies on the association between obesity and the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) show inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is any association between obesity and recurrent UTIs (RUTIs) among premenopausal women. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted in the outpatient clinics of the internal medicine departments of three hospitals. All consecutive non-pregnant premenopausal women aged 20-55 years, who presented with RUTIs over a 2-year period, were included; these women were compared to randomly selected women from the same outpatient clinics who had no history of RUTI and were age-matched ±5 years...

Cyclophosphamide (CP), an alkylating antineoplastic agent is widely used in the treatment of solid tumors and B-cell malignant disease. It is known to cause urinary bladder damage due to inducing oxidative stress. Moringa oleifera (Mof) is commonly known as drumstick tree. Moringa leaves have been reported to be a rich source of β-carotene, protein, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. It acts as a good source of natural antioxidants; due to the presence of various types of antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid, flavonoids, phenolics and carotenoids...

INTRODUCTION: Pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged and spread globally in the spring of 2009. Saudi Arabia also witnessed a severe H1N1 pandemic virus epidemic with considerable morbidity and mortality in different parts of the kingdom beginning in June 2009. The influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus was detected in samples collected between May 2009 and November 2010 from Makkah region. This study provides data on the viral diagnosis and genetic diversity of hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes of influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 virus from Saudi Arabia...

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: Concomitant hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and psoriasis vulgaris (PV) are not uncommon coexisting diseases, especially in areas with high viral hepatitis endemicity. To date, data about the interaction between both diseases are scarce. Therefore, we aimed to describe the possible interplay between the HCV viral load and psoriatic activity in concomitant Egyptian diseased patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between December 2011 and August 2013, all psoriatic patients attending Assiut University Hospital outpatient clinics were tested for HCV serologic assay...

Hypercoagulability in mitral valve disease (MVD), a cause of atrial fibrillation (AF) and stroke, is potentially due to endothelial damage/dysfunction (marked by circulating endothelial cells [CECs]), platelet activation (soluble P-selectin [sPsel], platelet microparticles [PMPs], and soluble CD40 [sCD40]), and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) cholesterol. We measured these variables in 24 patients with MVD as well as in 21 with MVD + AF and compared them with 20 healthy controls (HCs). The CECs and PMPs were measured by flow cytometry; sPsel, oxLDL, and CD40 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay...
