BACKGROUND: With recent advances in technology and introduction of new intraocular lens (IOL) models, surgeons today have the opportunity to choose from various optical designs, which can influence the postoperative quality of vision. In our laboratory study, we compared the optical quality of three different IOLs that use the identical platform and are produced by the same manufacturer. The study included two diffractive multifocal IOLs, a bifocal and a trifocal one, as well as a monofocal IOL...

Presbyopia-treating intraocular lenses (IOLs) are now widely available and offer high predictability at all distances, better visual outcomes, and high patient satisfaction. In most patients, the same multifocal IOL is implanted bilaterally. In certain circumstances, such as during complex surgeries, it is important to be prepared with a backup plan to maintain surgical expectations. We report 3 patients who had femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgeries in both eyes. The complicated eye had implantation of a bifocal IOL and the fellow eye of a trifocal IOL...

A 51-year-old woman developed severe fibrosis and occlusion of the visual axis in 1 eye, maintaining a pinhole aperture in the fellow eye, 2 months after uneventful cataract surgery and implantation of a hydrophilic trifocal intraocular lens in the capsular bag. She had not exhibited any risk factor for anterior capsule contraction preoperatively. Femtosecond laser-assisted capsulotomy with a fluid-filled interface system was used to perform a simultaneous anterior capsulotomy in both eyes. Preoperative calculations of the incision depth of the capsulotomy were performed using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and adjusted intraoperatively with the OCT system of the femtosecond laser...

Rehabilitation of segmental defects of maxilla presents a reconstructive challenge to obtain an ideal osseous form and height with adequate soft tissue investment. Though variety of prosthetic and surgical reconstructive options like the use of vascularized and non vascularized bone grafts are available they produce less than optimal results. Bone transport distraction is a reliable procedure in various maxillofacial bony defect reconstruction techniques. We describe herein a technique of maxillary bone transport distraction using an indigenously designed, custom made trifocal transport distractor performed in a post traumatic avulsive defect of the anterior maxilla...

Fracture of an intraocular lens (IOL) haptic is a rare complication of cataract surgery. A broken haptic can cause serious damage in the anterior and posterior segments. To the best of our knowledge, a broken haptic in a high-quality, commercially available trifocal IOL has not been documented in the literature. Prompt and proactive action at 1 day postoperatively aided in addressing the complication and restoring the vision. We suggest that the ophthalmologist performed a thorough evaluation on the 1(st) postoperative day and take immediate action after a discussion with the patient and relatives...

Maxillary segmental defects are a reconstructive challenge particularly when the anterior arch is involved. Missing bone, mucosa, and teeth should be replaced; fistulae closure should be guaranteed by bone and mucosa continuity; stable functional occlusion should be achieved; and facial aesthetics restored. These defects resulting from tumor excisions, if left untreated, will cause additional problems related to interposed scar and collapse of lip and nose. Immediate reconstruction should avoid these problems and should be considered when safe tumor-free margins are obtained...
