Background Green synthesis of nanoparticles is a growing trend. The annual plant Xanthium strumarium L. ( X. strumarium ) belongs to the Asteraceae family. The herb has traditionally been used to treat a variety of ailments, including leucoderma, dangerous insect bites, epilepsy, salivation, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, etc. Inorganic, biocompatible, and non-toxic titanium is a substance employed in the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries as well as in fields like bone tissue engineering. The aim of the study is to characterize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂NPs), which were synthesized from X...

Alfalfa, Medicago sativa, is a link connecting crop production and animal husbandry and plays a dominant role in the development of the livestock sector. The productivity of alfalfa is adversely affected by aphids' feeding damage and their capacity to transmit viral plant pathogens. To increase alfalfa forage yield, it is imperative to control pest insects and use resistant varieties. The aim of this study was to identify the mechanism of M. sativa resistance to aphids by examining changes in the physiology, feeding behavior, and life history of the pests...

BACKGROUND: Brazil has a larger number of adolescent offenders, but studies evaluating their oral health are still limited. OBJECTIVE: Assess the association between salivary flow and caries experience in youngsters deprived of liberty. METHODOLOGY: Sixty-eight male adolescents in conflict with the law, aged between 15 and 19 years, from a Socio-Educational Assistance Center in Brazil participated in the present study. They answered a structured questionnaire, and oral examination was performed by the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index...

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the upper and lower motor neurons with upper and lower motor neuron manifestations. It is divided into two variants: a spinal onset and a bulbar onset. The first starts as focal muscle weakness and wasting that spreads with disease progression, while the second phenotype presents with dysarthria, dysphonia, and dysphagia. Moreover, an extra-motor manifestation could be reported with the most commonly reported symptoms being the change in cognition and sleep disorder...

Hepatic lipidosis is a prevalent metabolic disorder, and in vivo models to study intermediary lipid metabolism are needed in dairy cows. Objectives were to apply a method to induce hyperlipidemia and characterize the responses and safety of the intervention in feed-restricted dry Holstein cows at 8 mo of gestation. It was hypothesized that infusion of tyloxapol would induce hyperlipidemia without deleterious effects on health of dairy cows. Pregnant, nonlactating parous Holstein cows (n = 33) at a mean (± standard deviation) of 234 ± 2...

This review focuses on the current disparities and gaps in research on the characteristics of the oral ecosystem of denture wearers, making a unique contribution to the literature on this topic. We aimed to synthesize the literature on the state of current knowledge concerning the biological behavior of the different polymers used in prosthetics. Whichever polymer is used in the composition of the prosthetic base (poly methyl methacrylate acrylic (PMMA), polyamide (PA), or polyether ether ketone (PEEK)), the simple presence of a removable prosthesis in the oral cavity can disturb the balance of the oral microbiota...

Autonomic adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs (APs) cause clinical challenges, but few studies have investigated sex differences and their underlying biological pathways. Sex-specific regulation of relevant hormones could be involved. We investigated sex differences in autonomic adverse effects related to olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, and aripiprazole, and the role of hormones related to APs. Patients with severe mental disorders (N = 1318) were included and grouped based on AP monotherapy: olanzapine (N = 364), quetiapine (N = 211), risperidone (N = 102), aripiprazole (N = 138), and no AP (N = 503)...

Dysphagia is a common complication in patients with oral cancer who have undergone free flap transplantation. The aim of this cluster randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the effect of personalized oral exercises on swallowing function in this group of patients. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 34) or control (n = 34) group. Intervention group patients received personalized oral exercises starting on day 6 after surgery. Swallowing function was evaluated on days 6 and 15, and at 1 month postoperative using the Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability-Oral Cancer tool (MASA-OC)...

This study investigated two outbreaks of spontaneous poisoning by Baccharis coridifolia (Asteraceae) in early-weaned beef calves in Tacuarembó, Uruguay. A total of 34 affected calves showed signs of salivation, anorexia, apathy, marked dehydration, and diarrhea. Deaths occurred 36-72 h after consumption and mortality varied from 37.5% to 43.3% for outbreak 1 and outbreak 2, respectively. The main pathological findings include diffuse severe necrosis of the prestomachs and lymphoid tissues. Ultrastructurally, epithelial cells of the rumen showed swelling, lysis of the organelles, degradation of intercellular attachments, and degradation of the nuclear chromatin...

Systemically, atropine carries indications for the treatment of asymptomatic and symptomatic bradycardia, reduction of salivation and bronchial secretions prior to surgery, and as an antidote for a variety of poisoning agents (i.e., carbamate or organophosphate insecticides, nerve agents, muscarine-containing mushrooms). Topically, atropine is administered via the ophthalmic route for the treatment of cycloplegia, mydriasis, and amblyopia or may be administered sublingually to treat chronic sialorrhea...

In recent times, usage of pesticide, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers in farming lands has made the environment worse. The pesticide residues and toxic byproducts from agricultural lands were found to contaminate the aquatic ecosystem. The misuse of synthetic pesticide not only affects the environment, but also affects the health status of aquatic organisms. The organophosphate pesticide pollutants are emerging contaminants, which threatens the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem. Monocrotophos (MCP) is an organophosphate insecticide, utilized on crops including rice, maize, sugarcane, cotton, soybeans, groundnuts and vegetables...

This study examined how separation behavior differs between dogs with and without separation-related problem behavior (SRB) and the possible risk factors. The study consisted of an online survey with 940 dog holders, which, in addition to demographic facts, also includes personality, emotional disposition and the attachment by the holder. Furthermore, a separation test was carried out with six non-SRB dogs over a maximum of 6 h, in which behavior and cortisol were determined. The questionnaire revealed that SRB dogs differed significantly from non-SRB dogs regarding the following factors: symptoms with at least a medium effect size such as restlessness, excitement, whining, howling, lip licking, barking and salivation, time to relax after separation, pessimism, persistence, excitability, calmness, separation frequency, greeting of holder and type of greeting...

When conducting toxicology studies, the interpretation of drug-related neurological clinical signs such as convulsions, myoclonus/myoclonic jerks, tremors, ataxia, and salivation requires an understanding of the spontaneous incidence of those observations in commonly used laboratory animal species. The spontaneous incidence of central nervous system clinical signs in control animals from a single facility using cage-side observations or high definition video monitoring was retrospectively analyzed. Spontaneous convulsions were observed at low incidence in Beagle dogs and Sprague-Dawley rats but were not identified in cynomolgus monkeys and Göttingen minipigs...

The phloem-feeding insect Bemisia tabaci is an important pest, responsible for the transmission of several crop-threatening virus species. While feeding, the insect secretes a cocktail of effectors to modulate plant defense responses. Here, we present a set of proteins that was identified in artificial diet on which B. tabaci was salivating. Subsequently we studied whether these candidate effectors can play a role in plant immune suppression. Effector G4 was the most robust suppressor of an induced-ROS response in Nicotiana benthamiana...
