Importance: In some centers, the presence of a senior general surgeon (SGS) is obligatory in every procedure, including appendectomy, while in others it is not. There is a relative paucity in the literature of reports comparing the outcomes of appendectomies performed by unsupervised general surgery residents (GSRs) with those performed in the presence of an SGS. Objective: To compare the outcomes of appendectomies performed by SGSs with those performed by GSRs...

PURPOSE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of ovulatory dysfunction and female infertility. The etiopathogenetic mechanisms of PCOS have been studied for many years, although exact causes remain unclear. It has been demonstrated that proteoglycan degradation by a disintegrin-like metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type motifs-1 (ADAMTS-1) is essential for ovulation and fertilization. The objective of our study is to analyze the levels of ADAMTS-1 and aggrecan in the follicular fluid (FF) of PCOS patients compared with normal ovulatory women and to determine whether these markers could be a predictor of in vitro fertilization (IVF) success in PCOS patients...

The aim of this study was to assess the historical trends of metal concentrations in coastal sediments in the vicinity of an inactive mining area, find background values and contamination levels of metals around the Karaburun peninsula, and then search for other sources of mercury in marine sediment cores using multivariate statistical analysis and report the potential ecological risks from that metal contamination. Surface sediment samples were taken from seven stations. Water depths were less than 20 m (coastal area) at stations KB07 and KB08...

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, 2D ultrasound parameters have been used for the diagnosis of a suspected morbidly adherent placenta (MAP) previa. More objective techniques have not been well studied yet. OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of prenatal 3D power Doppler analysis of flow and vascular indices to predict the morbidly adherent placenta (MAP) objectively. METHODS: Prospective cohort study was performed in women between 28-32 weeks with known placenta previa...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex disease that is associated with devastating outcomes resulting from lung involvement and several comorbidities. Comorbidities could impact on symptomology, quality of life, the complications, the management, economic burden and the mortality of the disease. The importance of comorbidities originates from their impact on the outcome of COPD. The most frequent comorbidities in COPD are cardiovascular, endocrinological, musculoskeletal, phycological disorders and lung cancer...

Skull base tumors and, in particular, vestibular schwannoma (VS) are among the etiological reasons for single-sided deafness (SSD). Patients with SSD have problems in understanding speech in a noisy environment and cannot localize the direction of sounds. Baha is one of the most frequently used systems for SSD compensation. Out of 38 patients with SSD after retrosigmoid removal of VS who underwent testing with Baha softband, 16 were satisfied and were indicated for Baha implantation. Two surgical approaches have been used-the Nijmegen linear incision technique with subdermal thinning (Group I, implant BI300) and fast surgery technique without subdermal thinning (Group II, implant BIA400)...

The carabid subtribe Cymindidina Laporte, 1834 is reviewed for the southwestern Saudi Arabia. Five species belonging to two genera (Afrotarus Jeannel, 1949 and Cymindis Latreille, 1806) are studied, including two species described as new: A. fadli sp. n. from Baha Province and A. soudaensis sp. n. from Asir Province. A key to genera and species of Saudi Arabia is given.

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to evaluate the advantages and limitations of delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in a tertiary center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all patients admitted to our institution with acute calculous cholecystitis (ACC) between January 2003 and December of 2012 was performed. Data collected included patient demographics and comorbidities, presenting symptoms, laboratory findings, imaging results, length of stay (LOS), time to surgery, and surgical complications...

Background Subclinical thyroid disease during pregnancy may be associated with adverse outcomes, including a lower-than-normal IQ in offspring. It is unknown whether levothyroxine treatment of women who are identified as having subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroxinemia during pregnancy improves cognitive function in their children. Methods We screened women with a singleton pregnancy before 20 weeks of gestation for subclinical hypothyroidism, defined as a thyrotropin level of 4.00 mU or more per liter and a normal free thyroxine (T4) level (0...

Cupriavidus pauculus is an emerging organism causing infections in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. We report a C.pauculus pneumonia case susceptible to cefepime in an infant with end-stage renal failure. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of C. pauculus causing respiratory infections in the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The current study attempted to investigate the development of Arabic academic vocabulary knowledge among middle-school Arabic native speakers, taking into account the socioeconomic status of the Arab population in Israel. For this purpose, Arabic academic word list was developed, mapping the required academic words that are needed for adequate coping with informational texts as appearing in the different content areas text-books. Six-hundred Arabic speaking middle school pupils from the different areas in Israel, representing the different Arab subgroups: general Arab community, Druze and Bedouins, have participated in the current study...

INTRODUCTION: Baha(®) Attract is a new transcutaneous bone-conduction hearing aid, which is more preferable in childhood than the conventional percutaneous systems. AIM: Our aim was to demonstrate the possibilities of application in childhood. METHOD: Eight children have undergone surgeries (mean age of 13.2 ± 3.2 years; "posterosuperior" incision technique, 5 mm implants). The thickness of the skull bone was determined in 72 children (1-8 years old) at the recommended implant site, based on CT scans...

OBJECTIVES: Bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHAs) have been known to partially restore some of the functions lost in subjects with single-sided deafness (SSD). Our aims in this systemic review were to analyze the present capabilities of BAHAs in the context of SSD, and to evaluate the efficacy of BAHAs in improving speech recognition in noisy conditions, sound localization, and subjective outcomes. DESIGN: A systematic search was undertaken until August 2015 by two independent reviewers, with disagreements resolved by consensus...

OBJECTIVE Patients with ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts with programmable valves who would benefit from osseointegrated hearing devices (OIHDs) represent a unique population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the magnetic field strengths of 4 OIHDs and their interactions with 5 programmable VP shunt valves. METHODS Magnetic field strength was measured as a function of distance for each hearing device (Cochlear Baha 5, Cochlear Baha BP110, Oticon Ponto Plus Power, and Medtronic Sophono) in the following modes: inactive, active in quiet, and active in 60 decibels of background noise in the sound booth...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the outcomes of Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA(®)) Attract implantation in a cohort of paediatric patients. METHODS: Prospective data collection and case review were undertaken in a paediatric tertiary referral centre. We have included patients under the age of 16 years with unilateral or bilateral hearing loss that met the criteria for BAHA(®) Attract implantation. The main outcome measures were surgical complications and Patient Reported Outcomes including the 'Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing scale' (SSQ-12) and 'Qualitative Feedback for BAHA(®) 5 Hearing Aids'...

Propolis has been used to treat several diseases since ancient times, and is an important source of bioactive natural compounds and drug derivatives. These properties have kept the interest of investigators around the world, leading to the investigation of the chemical and biological properties and application of propolis. In this report, the chemical constituents that are responsible for the anticancer activities of propolis were analyzed. The propolis was sourced from Al-Baha in the southern part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia...
