Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium. Although this zoonotic infection is one of the major public health problems in some developing countries, it is extremely rare in Turkey. In this article, we present the case of a pediatric patient with neurocysticercosis who was misdiagnosed with brain abscess because of focal seizures in another hospital.

OBJECTIVES: development of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-specific CD8+ T cell response is crucial in preventing symptomatic CMV infection specially, in stem cell transplant (SCT) patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate CMV-specific CD8+ T cell reconstitution in allogeneic SCT recipients and to study the possible association between CMV-specific CD8+ T cell recovery with protection from CMV reactivation and persistency. METHODS: Human leuKocyte antigen (HLA)-tetramers were used for CMV-specific CD8+ cell quantitation by Flow cytometry in twenty post-allogeneic SCT patients...

OBJECTIVE:  The objective of this study was to compare adverse pregnancy outcomes between fetuses with estimated fetal weight (EFW) < 10 to > 10% in women with preterm preeclampsia (PE) with severe features. MATERIALS AND METHODS:  All women with preterm PE with severe features and nonanomalous singletons with EFW were identified at a tertiary center. Women with oligohydramnios or absent/reversed umbilical Doppler velocimetry were excluded. Using multivariable analysis, we compared the composite maternal and neonatal morbidities (CMM and CNM) between those with appropriate for gestational age (AGA) fetal growth, defined as EFW at 10 to 90th versus those with fetal growth restriction (FGR), defined as EFW < 10th percentile for gestational age (GA)...

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine baseline Caesarean delivery (CD) surgical site infection (SSI) rates in various patient subgroups and to identify potentially modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for SSI. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a multicentre CD registry. Women who underwent CD were divided into SSI versus no SSI. SSI was defined as an infection that occurred in the part of the body where the surgery took place, within 30 days of surgery...

AIM: To evaluate clinical outcomes after implantation of a new diffractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with +3.00 addition power. METHODS: This is a retrospective, consecutive case series of cataract patients who underwent bilateral implantation of the Optiflex MO/HF D012 (Moss Vision Inc. Ltd, London, UK) multifocal IOL. Patients followed for 6mo were included in the study. Data on distance, intermediate and near visual acuity, refractive error [manifest spherical equivalent (MSE)], contrast sensitivity, adverse events, subjective symptoms, spectacle independence and patient satisfaction [visual function questionnaire (VFQ)-25 questionnaire] were retrieved from electronic medical records and analyzed...

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effect of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) performed for morbid obesity on serum lipid levels of dyslipidemic and normolipidemic patients. METHODS: 141 patients who underwent LSG between September 2014 and January 2016 were included in the study. RESULTS: The patients' mean body mass index was 46.27 ± 6.79 kg/m2 preoperatively, 31.60 ± 5.37 kg/m2 in the 6th month postoperatively and 27...

Background and Objectives: Despite the development of hypocortisolemia after corticotroph surgical adenomectomy, 15-20% patients have recurrence of Cushing's disease (CD). In this study, we investigated the impact of tumor size and the value of peri-operative assessment of ACTH and adrenal steroid levels in predicting recurrence. Methods: Peri-operatively, no glucocorticoids were administered until the serum cortisol was ≤ 3 ug/dL. Blood samples were obtained before and repeatedly after adenomectomy in 79 patients with CD...

In this study, we have highlighted our experience with a new transcutaneous bone conduction hearing device, the Baha Attract System along with finer details on its surgical technique, some challenges faced intraoperatively and the surgical outcome. This study was carried out in our tertiary care hospital over the last 1 year. Our study included the first 4 patients, all of which were males; with a mean age of 13.25 years in whom the new Baha Attract System was used. The mean air-bone gap was 48 dB. Bone smoothening around the implant was needed in 2 patients...

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) has a considerable failure rate. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) is one of the rescue options. This study aims to compare the complication rates and outcomes between LAGB converted to LRYGB and primary LRYGB. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in all patients converted from LAGB to LRYGB between January 2007 and March 2017. This group was compared to a matched cohort of primary LRYGB patients operated during the same period...

Sheep and goat pox (SGP) with peste des petits ruminants (PPR) are transboundary viral diseases of small ruminants that cause huge economic losses. Recombinant vaccines that can protect from both infections have been reported as a promising solution for the future. SGP was used as a vector to express two structural proteins hemagglutinin or the fusion protein of PPRV. We compared immunity conferred by recombinant capripoxvirus vaccines expressing H or F or both HF. Safety and efficacy were evaluated in goats and sheep...

Antenatal Bartter syndrome is a rare condition that can present with different clinical features. These features include early onset maternal polyhydramnios, failure to thrive, prematurity and nephrocalcinosis. We are presenting this 20-day-old girl who had an antenatal history of polyhydramnios. She developed persistent non-bilious vomiting that was associated with constipation soon after birth. She presented with failure to thrive and features suggestive of intestinal obstruction. On the initial evaluation, she was noted to have hypokalaemic, hyponatraemic metabolic alkalosis...

BACKGROUND: Viral protein expression in Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a powerful tool for structural/functional studies as well as for vaccine and diagnostics development. However, numerous factors such as codon bias, mRNA secondary structure and nucleotides distribution, have been indentified to hamper this heterologous expression. RESULTS: In this study, we combined computational and biochemical methods to analyze the influence of these factors on the expression of different segments of hepatitis E virus (HEV) ORF 2 protein and hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg)...

BACKGROUND: Primer epiploic appendagitis (PEA) is an uncommon condition. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and computed tomography (CT) findings of 45 patients with PEA. RESULTS: On the basis of physical examination and pain localization, presumptive clinical diagnosis was acute appendicitis (n=13), acute cholecystitis (n=2), acute diverticulitis (n=19), renal colic (n=7) and ovarian pathology (n=4). CONCLUSION: Although it has no characteristic clinical and laboratory features, CT is the best modality for accurate diagnosis of PEA...

BACKGROUND: Bone conduction (BC) is an alternative to air conduction to stimulate the inner ear. In general, the stimulation for BC occurs on a specific location directly on the skull bone or through the skin covering the skull bone. The stimulation propagates to the ipsilateral and contralateral cochlea, mainly via the skull bone and possibly via other skull contents. This study aims to investigate the wave propagation on the surface of the skull bone during BC stimulation at the forehead and at ipsilateral mastoid...

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine if transvaginal cervical length at 16-20 weeks is predictive of preterm birth <34 weeks in a large cohort of twin pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN: This is a secondary analysis from a randomized trial of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate in twins to prevent preterm birth. Transvaginal cervical length was performed at 16-20-week gestation. The inclusion criteria were non-anomalous twins with transvaginal cervical length at 16-20 weeks...
