BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality and adverse neonatal outcomes. Little is known about the extent of the health and cost burden of preeclampsia in the United States. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to quantify the annual epidemiological and health care cost burden of preeclampsia to both mothers and infants in the United States in 2012. STUDY DESIGN: We used epidemiological and econometric methods to assess the annual cost of preeclampsia in the United States using a combination of population-based and administrative data sets: the National Center for Health Statistics Vital Statistics on Births, the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative Databases, the US Health Care Cost and Utilization Project database, and a commercial claims data set...

INTRODUCTION: ENT surgeons may refer children with otitis media with effusion (OME) to audiology for consideration of hearing aids. They are an option for the treatment of OME, but are only effective if the child actually wears them. Our study investigated what proportion of children referred for hearing aids actually receive them, and whether children use them. METHOD: Retrospective study of children referred to audiology from November 2013 to August 2014, including 70 children referred by ENT for hearing aids for OME, plus a further 5 children with OME given hearing aids through direct access audiology service...

In arid zones, the shortage of bee forage is critical and usually compels beekeepers to move their colonies in search of better forages. Identifying and mapping the spatiotemporal distribution of the bee forages over given area is important for better management of bee colonies. In this study honey bee plants in the target areas were inventoried following, ground inventory work supported with GIS applications. The study was conducted on 85 large plots of 50 × 50 m each. At each plot, data on species name, height, base diameter, crown height, crown diameter has been taken for each plant with their respective geographical positions...

PURPOSE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of ovulatory dysfunction and female infertility. The etiopathogenetic mechanisms of PCOS have been studied for many years, although exact causes remain unclear. It has been demonstrated that proteoglycan degradation by a disintegrin-like metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type motifs-1 (ADAMTS-1) is essential for ovulation and fertilization. The objective of our study is to analyze the levels of ADAMTS-1 and aggrecan in the follicular fluid (FF) of PCOS patients compared with normal ovulatory women and to determine whether these markers could be a predictor of in vitro fertilization (IVF) success in PCOS patients...
