BACKGROUND: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a serious gait disorder affecting up to two-thirds of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Cueing has been explored as a method of generating motor execution using visual transverse lines on the floor. However, the impact of a laser light visual cue remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine the biomechanical effect of a laser cane on FOG in a participant with PD compared to a healthy age- and gender-matched control. METHODS: The participant with PD and healthy control were given a task of initiating gait from standing...

Freezing of gait (FOG) and falls are major sources of disability for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, and show limited responsiveness to medications. We assessed the efficacy of visual cues for overcoming FOG in an open-label study of 26 patients with PD. The change in the frequency of falls was a secondary outcome measure. Subjects underwent a 1-2 month baseline period of use of a cane or walker without visual cues, followed by 1 month using the same device with the laserlight visual cue. The laserlight visual cue was associated with a modest but significant mean reduction in FOG Questionnaire (FOGQ) scores of 1...

The insertion tendinitis of the proximal part of the patellar tendon frequently occurs in weight-lifters. In a prospective non-randomized study soft-laserlight (helium/neon-laser, wave length: 632.8 nm, power: 5 mW) was applicated on standardized acupuncture points on 21 knee joints of 15 performance athletes. Pain reduction during sports activity was obtained in 85.7% after the end of therapy and in 81 % in a three months follow-up. Local tenderness improved in 57.1 %. Key words: patellar tendinitis, jumper's knee, soft laser, laser acupuncture, weight-lifting...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

Low-level-laser-therapy (LLLT) targeting the inner ear has been discussed as a therapeutic procedure for cochlear dysfunction such as chronic cochlear tinnitus or sensorineural hearing loss. Former studies demonstrate dose-dependent biological and physiological effects of LLLT such as enhanced recovery of peripheral nerve injuries, which could be of therapeutic interest in cochlear dysfunction. To date, in patients with chronic tinnitus mastoidal and transmeatal irradiation has been performed without systematic dosimetric assessment...

An approach for wave-front sensing using reflected laserlight from a rough object is proposed. Light from a single laser beam is split into two beams, and the beams are launched from spatially separated apertures to illuminate an object. The reflected laser light is measured in the pupil plane of a receive telescope and in a plane conjugate to the object. By modulation of one of the two illuminator beams, the intensity pattern associated with each beam, as well as the field cross product of the two beams, is measured in each plane...

Since the 1970's lasers are used in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The effect of a laser on tissue is determined by the wavelength of the laserlight and the tissue specific absorbtion. Lasers are used for evaporation, excision and coagulation of tissue. The CO2-laser, the Nd:YAG-laser and the Argonlaser are used for these purposes. Light and laserlight are used for the diagnosis of mucosal lesions. By using different excitation wavelength autofluorescence of lesions can be detected and analysed. An artificial neural network can be used to analyse these data...

Coronary thrombosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes, and platelet activation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of coronary thrombus. A new platelet aggregometer using a laserlight scattering beam was trialled for assessment of platelet aggregation. Platelet aggregability, especially small-sized platelet aggregates, was investigated on admission using the laser-light scattering method and again after treatment in 23 patients with acute coronary syndromes. The platelet aggregability in 14 patients with stable exertional angina and in 14 control subjects was also examined...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In view of the important regulatory role of cytokines in wound healing and inflammation, we investigated the effects of low energy laser irradiation on cytokine release by human peripheral blood monocytes (M phi) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) in vitro. Also, the effects of laser light on the expression of endothelial adhesion molecules, another important feature of inflammatory and regenerative responses, were assessed. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cells were irradiated with a pulsed GaAs-laser (904 nm) at energy densities 0 (= sham), 0...

The clinical report addresses the first application of a antibody-targeted photodynamic laser therapy with Phthalocyanines. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been proposed as a further treatment modality in oncology. The concept of PDT is based on the interaction between a dye which is accumulated in the target and laserlight. The phototoxic effect is achieved by the augmentation of oxygen radicals. The improvement of the selectivity and the reduction of side-effects is achieved by our concept of using an antibody-targeted phthalocyane induced PDT...
