Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a condition in which leiomyoma originating from uterine myoma or intrauterine venous walls develops intravenously. A single-stage operation was planned by the departments of gynecology and cardiovascular surgery for a patient in which the IVL was extended across the tricuspid valve. It was possible to safely perform perioperative care with continued evaluation of the tumor position and intravascular volume through the use of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). TEE can be useful in the intraoperative care of patients with intracardiac tumor extension as in this case...

'The association of hypotension with the insertion of an abdominal retractor during lower abdominal surgery in pediatric patients: a retrospective observational study' by Rika Nakayama, Takahiro Mihara, Yoshihisa Miyamoto & Koui Ka.1 The above article from Pediatric Anesthesia, published online on July 7, 2015 in Wiley Online Library (http://wileyonlinelibrary.com) has been retracted by agreement between the authors, the Journal Editor in Chief, Andrew Davidson, and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The retraction has been agreed following a review of the study data by the authors, which found that cases not satisfying the inclusion criteria were included and that there were data collection errors with respect to the patients' ages and sexes...

In the article entitled: "A primer on nerve agents: what the emergency responder, anesthesiologist, and intensivist needs to know" published in the October 2017 issue of the Journal, Can J Anesth 2017; 64: 1059-1070, two doses in Table 3 contained errors and have now been corrected (and highlighted in bold) in the revised table herein. In the table on page 1064, next to "Pralidoxime/Obidoxime/HI-6", the second column should read: "Pralidoxime- Mild cases: 1-2 g iv over 5-10 min or im"...

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the proximal femur in elderly patients are a challenge for orthopedics, anesthe-sio-logy and geriatrics. Early mobilization reduces postoperative mortality among these patients. Effective anal-gesia is necessary to achieve this goal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of perioperative medical records of 78. patients undergoing surgical treatment of proximal femur fractures was performed. Group 1 (n=35)consisted of patients who were treated with pharmacologic analgesia only (systemic analgesics) and Group 2 (n=43) involved patients who re-ceived a preoperative fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) and pharmacologic analgesia...

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) can be fatal if the crisis is not appropriately treated. It is an inherited disease usually triggered by the administration of volatile inhalational anesthetics and/or succinylcholine, a muscle relaxant. In a patient with suspected MH, the mechanism of calcium release from storage in the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the skeletal muscle is abnormally accelerated. Unexplained hypercarbia representing >55 mmHg of end-tidal carbon dioxide, tachycardia, and muscle rigidity (including masseter muscle rigidity) are early signs of the initiation of MH, because the metabolism is accelerated...

Delayed fluorescence (DF) of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) has been recently proposed as a tool for monitoring of mitochondrial oxygen tension in vivo as well as for observation of the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) [E. G. Mik, Anesth. Analg., 2013, 117, 834-346; F. Piffaretti et al., J. Biomed. Opt., 2012, 17, 115007]. However, the efficiency of the mechanism of thermal activation (E-type DF), which was considered in the papers, is limited due to a large energy gap between the first excited singlet and the first triplet state of PpIX at room or body temperatures...

The manipulation of an airway is always a critical moment in the anesthetic management of patients with pheochromocytoma due to the high incidence of undesirable hemodynamic events in relation with the stimulus represented by the laryngoscopy. A known difficult airway in which it is necessary to carry out an orotracheal intubation while preserving spontaneous ventilation subjects the patient to a stressful situation. The objective is to obtain an acceptable level of comfort and sedation avoiding respiratory depression (Anesthesiol Clin 2015;33:233-40)...

BACKGROUND: Magnesium was reported to reduce both the anesthetic requirements and the period needed to reach a bi-spectral index value of 60 when used intra-operatively (Br J Anaesth 83:302-20, 1999; Anesth Analg 20:1273-5, 1988; Br J Anaesth 89:594-8, 2002; Anesth Analg 87:206-10, 1998; Br J Anaesth 89:594-8, 2002; Br J Anaesth 94:438-41, 2005) and to minimize the emergence agitation (Anaesthesia 61:1058-63, 2006). Previous studies examined the influence of magnesium on the anesthetic requirements while the bi-spectral Index values were kept within a constant range...
