BACKGROUND: Fractures of the proximal femur in elderly patients are a challenge for orthopedics, anesthe-sio-logy and geriatrics. Early mobilization reduces postoperative mortality among these patients. Effective anal-gesia is necessary to achieve this goal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of perioperative medical records of 78. patients undergoing surgical treatment of proximal femur fractures was performed. Group 1 (n=35)consisted of patients who were treated with pharmacologic analgesia only (systemic analgesics) and Group 2 (n=43) involved patients who re-ceived a preoperative fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) and pharmacologic analgesia...

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) can be fatal if the crisis is not appropriately treated. It is an inherited disease usually triggered by the administration of volatile inhalational anesthetics and/or succinylcholine, a muscle relaxant. In a patient with suspected MH, the mechanism of calcium release from storage in the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the skeletal muscle is abnormally accelerated. Unexplained hypercarbia representing >55 mmHg of end-tidal carbon dioxide, tachycardia, and muscle rigidity (including masseter muscle rigidity) are early signs of the initiation of MH, because the metabolism is accelerated...

Delayed fluorescence (DF) of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) has been recently proposed as a tool for monitoring of mitochondrial oxygen tension in vivo as well as for observation of the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) [E. G. Mik, Anesth. Analg., 2013, 117, 834-346; F. Piffaretti et al., J. Biomed. Opt., 2012, 17, 115007]. However, the efficiency of the mechanism of thermal activation (E-type DF), which was considered in the papers, is limited due to a large energy gap between the first excited singlet and the first triplet state of PpIX at room or body temperatures...

The manipulation of an airway is always a critical moment in the anesthetic management of patients with pheochromocytoma due to the high incidence of undesirable hemodynamic events in relation with the stimulus represented by the laryngoscopy. A known difficult airway in which it is necessary to carry out an orotracheal intubation while preserving spontaneous ventilation subjects the patient to a stressful situation. The objective is to obtain an acceptable level of comfort and sedation avoiding respiratory depression (Anesthesiol Clin 2015;33:233-40)...

BACKGROUND: Magnesium was reported to reduce both the anesthetic requirements and the period needed to reach a bi-spectral index value of 60 when used intra-operatively (Br J Anaesth 83:302-20, 1999; Anesth Analg 20:1273-5, 1988; Br J Anaesth 89:594-8, 2002; Anesth Analg 87:206-10, 1998; Br J Anaesth 89:594-8, 2002; Br J Anaesth 94:438-41, 2005) and to minimize the emergence agitation (Anaesthesia 61:1058-63, 2006). Previous studies examined the influence of magnesium on the anesthetic requirements while the bi-spectral Index values were kept within a constant range...

Salt consumption has been increased worldwide and the association of high salt diets with enhanced inflammation and target organ damage was reported. Little data were available about the effect of high salt diet on exocrine function of pancreas, while the relation between high salt intake and insulin sensitivity was controversial. This study was designed to investigate the effect of high salt diet on exocrine and endocrine pancreatic functions, and to elucidate the possible underlying mechanism(s). Twenty adult female Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups; control group; fed standard rodent diet containing 0...

BACKGROUND: Urethrocutaneous fistula is a well-known complication of hypospadias surgery. A recent prospective study by Kundra et al. (Pediatr Anesth 2012) has suggested that caudal anesthesia may increase the risk of fistula formation. We sought to evaluate this possible association and determine if any other novel factors may be associated with fistula formation. METHODS: Children who underwent primary hypospadias repair between January 1, 1994 and March 31, 2013 at our tertiary care center were included in this study...

Retraction Note to: Can J Anesth 2001; 1: 28–33, DOI 10.1007/BF03019810. To our readers: Further to the Expression of Concern ( posted online, it is with considerable regret that the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia hereby retracts the above-cited article by Dr. Yoshitaka Fujii as a result of: 1) overwhelming evidence of fabrication relating to the fact that the distribution of many variables reported by Dr. Fujii in this study are exceedingly unlikely; and 2) the inability of Dr...

Cognitive aids (CA), including emergency manuals and checklists, are tools designed to assist users in prioritizing and performing complex tasks during time sensitive, high stress situations (Marshall in Anesth Analgesia 117(5):1162-1171, 2013; Marshall and Mehra in Anaesthesia 69(7):669-677, 2014). The society for pediatric anesthesia (SPA) has developed a series of emergency checklists tailored for use by pediatric perioperative teams that cover a wide range of intraoperative critical events (Shaffner et al...
